HTC Touch (Rogers Version) Questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, new to the HTC game, never owned one before, and have done some research on the touch. What held me back was the lack of 850 band, and ram was pathetic. The NA version of the touch, the one that rogers offers, fixes both of these problems, and ive decided to give the phone a try.

I am assuming the rogers version is branded pretty badly, is there any way to flash it with a normal htc unbranded firmware? do you lose the 850mhz band that way? also, is the phone restricted in any way straight out of the box? And finally, any way to get A2DP on this thing? thanks

The only branding I see is it says "Rogers" in very small letters just above the clock on the left side...other than that, it seems like there were no other alterations.

It doesn't seem like the phone is restricted in anyway but then again, I'm not a poweruser. You can change the ringtone to any MP3 you want that you upload yourself. It looks like you change the theme to anything you want also.

Yes, you can flash the rom with a new file...I did it and my battery life has increased, and also it free'd up TONS of memory....i'm also OC'ing...

my touch is 100% worth it now

Because you're so nice... could you tell me how to flash the device? My ROM is 2.21.631.1 and the only version I found to download (xda-developers) started with a 1. Isn't that older/worse?

Sorry for being dense.

nice
i figured rogers isnt smart enough to brand and restrict a smartphone os, thanks!

I'm curious what you guys pay for data. I'm on Bell Mobility for $7 unlimited data but she took the wi-fi out for receiving. I'm watching tv, streaming radio music/talk/sports, using as modem to laptop, 5 email addys going ever few minutes etc... I'm sure it would cost a fortune on Rogers eh? The wife might get one and may make her go to Ted....

You do know that tethering isn't included in that $7 right? Don't wanna end up like the guy that got surprised with a $85,000 phone bill lol

Back on track...the only Rogers "stuff" on the Touch is:

1) Rogers logo (small) on home screen as mentioned above
2) Rogers logo (large) on start-up
3) Rogers logo (small) on rear battery cover
4) Rogers "Do More" icon in the Programs folder (for WAP sites)

Based on a conversation I had about a year ago with a fairly knowledgable Rogers tech support person, Rogers doesn't (and has no plans to) carrier lock any Windows Mobile device. Personally, I think the reasoning here is that it would just cause more customer service "headaches" (read: phone calls) than it is worth.

Based on my own "real-life" experience, I have owned 3 Windows Mobile phones/PDA's from Rogers and none of them have been locked.

Oh, and by the way, the Touch already has A2DP by default.

The touch, by default is SIM locked to Rogers. I had to unlock mine!

Posted by: DrZEUS

^^ yep me too...and everyone else I spoke to who has a Rogers Touch.

For anyone else who is interested, it can be easily unlocked though....just check xda developers.

i want to buy the touch without contract from the rogers store and then use it with my fido sim. Does anyone know if it will allow me to do that?

Posted by: mr_raider

I read somewhere before that Fido SIMs work on Rogers WM phones. not verified.

I Posted a link to the xda thread that explains how to ulock in the flashing and unlocking section. It's free.

Posted by: DrZEUS

yes it should work and like mr raider said if not then perform the xda unlock and you're good to go

What are the major differences between the cdma (Bell/Telus) and gsm (Rogers) version of the Touch?

Pretty much the same? Drastically different?

Posted by: Phife54

Bell/Telus Touch

-No Wifi
-Faster CPU (400mhz)
-Less Ram/Rom

Rogers Touch
-Wifi
-Slower CPU (201mhz)
-More Ram/Rom

I think thats the only differences..

i mean't i'm glad rogers hasn't messed with the touch. it's a great looking phone. i'm just worried a bit about how finger friendly it is. If anyone has personal experience with the touch regarding this, it will be well appreciated.

Posted by: quamirez07

LOL, there's a whole thread discussion about the Touch.

Posted by: ali903

sorry but i'm new to the forum.

This is what I've learned so far since I've got my Rogers Touch.

The Bell version is actually the HTC Vogue. The Rogers version is known as the Elfin (not the Elf, the Elfin- there is a very important distinction there).

If you go to XDA-Developers, when you are looking for stuff for your Rogers Touch, make sure you look under Elfin.

Very important - before you do anything to your phone, make sure you read up on it - especially when flashing roms!
