Maine and NH unofficial update

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

recently steve krom, the vice president and general manager of the new england region of at&t, unofficially announced that in the NH and southern Maine area 3G will be unveiled a little after Thanksgiving. If that is the case, there will be a lot of happy people in my area. Laptop cards will actually be of a good value when that happens. anyone else heard anything of that sort?

I was in the AT&T store in Scarborough, ME the other day and the rep there said they didn't expect it until sometime in 2009. Either way, Thanksgiving 2008 or sometime in 2009 seems to be a LONG way away since AMPS and TDMA are being shut off here (and nationwide) in February!

I'm hoping it will be sooner...on the order of June or July (I've seen statements from a variety of online sources that AT&T is going to have the same 3G coverage footprint as Verizon by the summer).

Thanksgiving! Thats a ways away. I don't know whats taking them so long. You'd think they would want to catch up to Verizon's 3g coverage.

In my area, even Alltel has had their 3G service for like two years now.

One would think that if the reason 3G has yet to be lit in Maine (and in other areas) was due to the current 850 MHz band being occupied by AMPS and TDMA, technicians would have been working diligently over the last few months to install equipment and prepare sites for 3G so they would be ready the day they switched the legacy modes off.

I don't see why it would take AT&T so much time after the February cut off date to fire 3G up (unless, of course, they missed the boat on the above idea). I guess it's possible that the largest wireless carrier in the US either didn't have enough money or technicians to get the ball rolling early. If that's the case....sucks for us subscribers...just gonna have to wait!

I have noticed weird things happening on the Maine network for the last 2 months.... Maybe thats whats happening..... I don't know...but your right... it does suck for us!!

3g bouncing in and out here this morning in Kittery, Maine

Funny, I heard all of Maine AT&T towers, from Portland to Bangor, would have 3G by Thanksgiving. . . . . sure he just said southern Maine?

Posted by: shoman94

I didn't notice any 3g since this morning between 5am and 8am.

That's awesome. I live in Scarboro, and would love 3G.

hurry up AT&T!

I heard from brunswick south by thanksgiving. The rest of maine will be converted as well... at a later date. We weren't told on a timeframe but i would assume within a few months from then.

Well....what I've been noticing is that I'm only getting 3G coming in and out when I'm using data. Just sitting idle...I don't get it....

I have not seen my Tilt in 3G at all around Portland. I head to portland from Boston every weekend, and somewhere between the NH tolls and the Maine border 3G disappears and I don't see it again until my trip home.

I can't wait to get 3G in Portland. I hate feeling crippled for 2 days out of the week.

I'm starting to see that happen in my area as well.

Is there a chance someone here knows how to contact Mr. Krom to see if there is a possibility he would be willing to give us an update?

If someone can produce contact info for him, I would be willing to make the inquiry.

You do know you can just call AT&T and ASK this sort of thing, right? Call Texas, ask for his info, and ye shall recieve a direct dial in 508.

Not exactly and update...but:

I had an occasion this week to speak with a mid level corporate network technician about data services that the County government I work for is using. As part of the conversation, I made it a point to inquire about 3G being lit in Southern Maine. The response? "3g is coming to a town near you...soon". UGGGGGGGGGGG.

I then tried to have him clarify "soon" and all I got was that "I can not give too much detail, but it is in the 2008 plan for build out this year. Ma, CT and RI have happened so I would think you are the next in line."

Wow, it's hard for me to believe that AT&T's own people don't know what's going on...or that they have to be so vague to protect their "plan"....ha....no one but their customers really care anyway...Verizon already has more of a 3G footprint.

SPILL IT AT&T....YOUR PAYING CUTOMERS WANT TO KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THEY CAN EXPECT BETTER SERVICES!

Annoying.... I just don't understand the secrecy. It's not like they are in the lead with 3g coverage!

It's crazy on how long its taking to get this up to date.
