When I power-up the phone goes straight to reminder/alarm mode. The phone will not respond. I must remove the battery to stop the music.

Have you tried the mater reset?? Hold down the center silver button and press the power button, and after about 8 seconds, the phone will promt you to continue to do a master reset. Keep in mind a master reset is also a master clear and you will lose all your data and contacts and such.

After following your instructions, it did not prompt me to master reset.
Any other suggestions?

make sure you are holding down the center button and do not release it for the full 8 seconds.
