How to get the Keyboard 20 with all the keys all the time

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,
The best keyboard for me on the Touch is the "20" keyboard that looks like a full QWERTY keyboard with the row of numbers along the top just like a regular keyboard. Each alpha and numeric character has its own key.

Unfortunately, this keyboard only shows up when you are entering info on password type fields. When you are at a regular field for plain data such as for entering usernames or URLs, this nice keyboard will collapse where now several characters are on one key (ie. instead of having separate "Q" and "W" keys, it will become "QW".

Is there anyway to keep the original full QWERTY "20" keyboard as it appears when entering data in a password type field on all the time?
Thanks.

Hmm click on the 20 symbol in the middle of the bottom bar, click the little up arrow for keyboard options, and then switch to the Keyboard or Touch Keyboard. That should switch to the QWERTY keyboard, but its smaller. Hope this helps.

There is a known issue with the touch and keyboards not staying the default when soft reseting the device. Many have used the program SIPChange, don't have a link right now but it works great for 3rd party keyboards and I'm sure it will work with the default HTC keyboards too. Will post the link when I have time to look for it.

THAT is exactly what I want to know too! I hope someone can come up with a fix...

I thought I was the only one this drove crazy. The qwerty keyboard is quite finger friendly and should have been an option on its own.

That is not the kb he is referring to. The one you mention is the full qwerty with very small keys that you can only use the stylus with.

Again, I don't think this is the issue.

By default, there are 4 keyboards installed on the Touch. In the "pop-up" list, the first 'Keyboard' is the one I referenced above. The second is 'Touch Keyboard' with 2 letters per key and shows the number 20 in the bottom centre of the screen. The 3rd kb is the 'Touch Keypad' and this has 3 letters per key (like a normal phone) and the number 12 at the bottom of the screen.

The 4th kb only comes up on certain ocassions and there doesn't seem to be a way to keep it as the default setting. This kb, like the first one, has one letter per key and a top row of numbers but the individual keys are gray (not white) and much larger (so you can finger type). I have yet to figure out the different ways/reasons this kb pops up instead of the "2-letters per key" but I do know that if you open Notes without actually opening a note file or "New" and you click on the 20 at the bottom of the screen, this is the kb that pops up. However, if you click on "New" and are in a blank screen then press 20, the 2-letter per key kb pops up instead.

Clear as mud?

Picture might clear it up for them.

Funny thing is the qwerty keyboard shows up by default in Opera Mobile. Only problem is the backspace key doesn't work. Seems like it wouldn't be so hard to modify it to be default. SPB Keyboard is great but sometimes for something quick like a web address I'd rather not go landscape if I can just use my fingers with this keyboard.

thx JwY you're a star

Update:
Read through the whole thread and wasn't too keen on importing anything into the registry. As it turns out all you need to do is make the change below to the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/keyboard layout /Preload/1
change e0010409 to xxxx

Made the change using PHM Regedit, did a soft reset and viola. The 20 keyboard and 12 keypad will now show the 40 key qwerty. If for some reason you need it back just go back in and change the key back to the correct value of e0010409.
Also note that you will lose the autocomplete function when entering names for email and txt messaging.
