Looks like something for sprint

Posted by: thraven233

Yeap.. I was thinking nextel

Posted by: i.Fido

Definitely a Sprintel phone.

Posted by: thraven233

But I am strangely attracted to it..

It's great for those Sprint customers who want a rugged phone on the AT&T network. The V365 (it's predecessor) is rugged, gets good reception, and is a generally great phone. Plain and simple, yes, but Sprint/Nextel customers aren't necessarily using texting and MediaNet on their phones anyways.

I'm excited about it, as we only had the V365 to sell in our store for about a month, and we've had a ton of new customers coming over from Nextel, more so than from any other carrier. And for them, it's another phone that has PTT built-in.

when is this phone availible?

Posted by: blackengaard

Huh.
It looks very rugged.
Maybe it's the V551 replacement.

At first I didn't see the Motorola name in the title and I thought it was the Sony Ericsson phone and I got all excited. =]

early Q3 with the EOL of the V365 starting in late May.

Does anyone know if it runs Linux/Java OS or old Synergy?

What? Q3? According to the engadget mobile post, it was supposed to be out by the end of March. What happened? It has already passed the FCC.

Also, does it have a B&W or color external LCD? Because if I have a flip phone, it MUST have an external B&W screen, or the screen must drop in to a 1 bit B&W mode like the nokias do and display the time.

I was thinking of getting the v365, because it does not have a stub antenna, and the battery life is very good. I demand a minimum, MINIMUM of 300 hours of standby time from my phones because I do a lot of outdoors work and don't have access to electricity for large chunks at a time.

Right now, it's either this, or the AT&T branded v190 they have on the website for gophone. That thing gets very good battery life, even better than the v365. If they ever refill stock, I might just get it. I don't need a camera, just excellent battery life, a calendar with ability to hook it to my mac and sync it with iSync (can be done over USB if it has it), and a speakerphone. Right now I am riding on a c168i because it's the cheapest thing I could find, and my contract is not up for an upgrade until July. It's nice, gets great battery life, but being a candybar phone with a color screen, I have to unlock the keypad to read the time, which is a major pain in the butt.

Any ideas?

This phone is gigantic, almost Tilt-sized when closed, but thicker. It has GPS like the Z9, for all you people needing turn by turn directions to your job sites.

As for the above poster, all GSM moto flips drop into b/w mode, and their screens are much more legible than the nokias when in that mode. The V9 can be read from 6 feet away with its huge external clock.

But the question is: how well does the bugger hold a signal?

My mother is eligible for upgrade in 2 days and this is the phone I think she'd like; it'll be sturdy when she beats it up, it's 3G, and it's got expandable memory.

Is the launch still on for late May?

Not my mom's cingy v3xx. The external color screen just cuts off after 15 seconds. Unless there is an option in the settings somewhere for it.

Actually, it does show a clock... But it is so dark you can't even read it unless in direct sunlight. So I don't agree with the "more legible than Nokias" remark.

Posted by: iamdigitalman

Ah yes I see it. I had to hold a flashlight up to it. Not very easy to read, and unless you had direct sunlight, you could not see it, so the whole city of Seattle with RAZRs are screwed

In any case, B&W LCDs are still useful. I wish my Nokia 1100 still worked...

oh, I had a SGH-127 for a couple weeks, despite having a B&W outer LCD, it still shut off completely. Oddly enough, it's cameraless brother, the a117 keeps the external screen on at all times, at least from what I can tell by the cnet review. I could also take pics with the clam closed, and I got a viewfinder on the external screen. As grainy and slow as it was, it worked.

I'm with you, man. I miss the days where the external LCD was a plain black and white screen that never shut off, so a quick glance told you the time, signal, missed calls, messages, etc.

the problem with all 3G phones is battery life. Until they figure out how to extand that all 3g phones will ahve minimal outer display that go to "sleep" to save battery life

Posted by: lowegg

This phone looks pretty good.

It's probably been said, it'll probably sell a lot more with the rugged phone users...wether it's cops, firefighters, construction workers or crazy kids who go through phones like nothing.

As for the antenna, people will get over it quick...

True, there should be an option to turn off auto detect on 3G. When the first blackjack first came out, there was a way to access certain settings to turn 3G off.

Since then and even now, a lot of areas do not have 3G it really benefited us to turn it off. The battery life did improve...

Posted by: iamdigitalman

on my CU500, you could turn off 3G through the programmer mode. It still got crap battery life, even though the battery was 1000mah

there has to be a way to do it on motos though. 3G is the reason my mom's v3xx goes dead in 6 hours. 14 days of standby time my butt.

Posted by: MyPyle

yes 3g can cause the battery to drain quicker but i think that is more of a software issue more than anything.

Mine seems to be doing a lot better than that.
