Wifi on demand? Sorry if it's a stupid question...

I was wondering... the phones can automatically connect to GPRS to download data via the cellular network when required, meaning, they're not always connected, right?
Does something like that exist for Wifi? I don't want to turn on Wifi all day long, because it sucks up the battery so fast, but only when I need to download stuff quick over the air. Is there a setting for that, or a 3rd party appy?
