I, i'm planning to get a 8320 or a 8820, I like the idea of a camera for the 8320 and the size and look of it more than the 8820 but id rather have gps, well is the gps worth it and good? you dont have to pay extra for the gps or anything and if i travel somewhere it should work anywhere? I dont have much experience with gps except for the one in my car but when i travel I think it would come in handy insted of using a huge map all the time

You need a BB dataplan to use the maps. BBMaps and GoogleMaps re free, but do not offer auto-reroute or voice command turn by turn. TeleNav costs $10 a month and offers both features, also requires a BB dataplan.

I have factory installed GPS in both of my cars. Found it to be much better than the BB handheld GPS. It has voice command, turn by turn and the large screen is easy to read at a glance.

If you need GPS for your car, I would highly recommend you purchase on of the portable GPS units, such as ones by Garmin, Magellan, Lowrance, etc. They are all much better than the PDA GPS IMHO. Check the following link: http://gpsinformation.net/

Whether it's worth it or not (regardless of what you're asking about) is a personal judgement call. I really like and find Telenav to be handy. Your experience will vary (based on the apps that I've tried) depending on the GPS app you're using. I can't stand BB Maps. Google Maps is handy but not really suited for in-car navigation. Mapquest is pretty good. I haven't been able to get Wayfinder to work and Nav4All was pretty cumbersome when I last tried it. Download them for yourself and give them a shot.

GPS costs nothing but you need maps to make the GPS data useful. That's where the GPS app that you choose comes into play. Some apps are free, some are not. All require that you have a BB data plan. There are no universal answers to the questions you're asking. Check into each GPS app to see if it meets your needs.

I think it's bad that there isn't just a map, say, of your city that you can download for using the GPS. Not only does it save data (you US guys have unlimited for $20 so it isn't an issue, but I'm paying $30 for 3mb ), but it also would make it faster since you don't have to keep streaming it.

By the way, say I'm in an area with no cell phone signal, would I still theoretically have GPS there ?

wait wayfinder works for bb?

You would have GPS signals, as it is a worldwide system. You most likely would not be able to download map data as you move off of the map portion you are currently using.

I don't think speed is an issue, at least I have not encountered it as one.

And my unlimited BB data is $30 a month. I feel your pain however!

So if you want gps or just google maps, you need a bb data plan either way then?

Yep. No getting around that Blackberry Data Plan.

Does not have to be a BB data plan. BB maps and google maps will work with any data plan on the BB but no push e-mail and a few other limitations.

I don't think that is correct. It is very difficult to do without the BB dataplan. Using another PDA/MediaNet plan is very hit or miss. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

IMHO, if you cant afford the BB dataplan, don't buy a BB. You won't be happy. And you have no reason to complain if things don't work as they should.

If you don't need rerouting you can use the WiFi to download the maps in advance. It appears (not a user) that this could do it.

e-Mobile GPS Companion on the Handango site could be used.

The two things that intrigue me are trip planning and that it can be used offline.
* Save location maps as favorites before your trip.
* View saved maps without any data charge. Perfect for offline use.

Blackberry's don't cache the maps. They update them on the fly through the Blackberry Data Plan.

go with mapquest navgator. is $4/mon ($49/yr). I use it and its awesome.

It has NOTHING to do with the hardware just the software that has been written so far depends on data instead of using device memory (onboard or offboard).

This is the first piece of software that I have seen that claims to get around that issue. But since there is no free trial (that I have been able to find) I have been reluctant to spend money on something that may or may not do anything different than what I already have.
