get 3G with unlocked and blue sim?

i apologize if this answer is posted elsewhere but after hours of combing for an exact answer, i've decided to pose the questions myself. i look forward to any concise helpful answers.

i am an old att cust. still have a blue sim. great old contract. yadda yadda.

my mot. V551 is slowly deteriorating. i believe this is because the old att is not keeping up whatever 4 frequ. it uses and is piling their money into 3G. this in neither here nor there and i'm done fighting with att

despite what att says, can i switch to better freq (3G) through the purchase of an unlocked phone and moving my SIM card to it?

will this work? or
do i need to buy a blank "new att" SIM? or otherwise?
if so, which SIM do i buy?
orange one?
finally, can i just go into a store, present my new unlocked razr and tell them my SIM became waterlogged and i need something that fits in here!!!???

i'm guessing my current SIM is tied into the old ATT's frequency and i'll only get the slowly expiring att infrastructure rather than the 3G? this is even though i've heard you can do it/can't do it/ need different SIM etc...

HELP!!!

You will be fine with an AT&T Wireless SIM card and your Blue plan on AT&Ts 3G network. I'm not sure about data since I can't add mMode anymore on my plan, but voice and text will work on the 3G network. Just make sure the device and network support 3G, and you're set. Make sure the device is unlocked or else the device will reject your SIM.

thanks but....to be sure you say, "with 'an" ATT wireless SIM card." can i just use my existing one or do i need to get a new one? if i need a new one, which kind? there are several and with different kb?

thanks. i just want to approach this prepared. :-)

Use your existing SIM card. No change needed.
You will continue as you have with your plan, as usual.

Thank you for the heads up.

thanks. and thanks for getting back to me.

i am unlocking my wife's razr, who is on orange plan and probably on 3G so i won't have to invest in anything. not a lot to lose, in other words but...i just can't help but think that when my att blue identified card shows up on the orange network (the one that WORKS!) it won't be allowed. that's what i'd do if i were att/cingular!! oh me of little faith here goes?
