Im new to this whole tethering thing, which i do have the unlimited data plan. I know your not suppose to take in a whole lot of data, which I'm not going to do but is it possible to tether by cable with a w580i? I searched and found really nothing.

In reality, you are not supposed to tether at all unless you have a PDA or Blackberry data package which permits it. Those packages cost $60.00 per month. Do you think that AT&T will look the other way if you are only paying one-fourth of that amount?

Well i did my research on that, they said if I dont watch movies and download stuff...I would only use it to search the web.

but is it possible with a unbranded w580i?

I am sure that AT&T did not tell you that. Tethering means downloading. Even viewing a single web page could be one megabyte of data transmitted. Pages for PC viewing are much larger than the pages you could view on your telephone's screen. Your phone's connection is not a substitute for a home based Internet connection using dial-up, DSL or cable. It is theft of service no matter how little or how much you take. Now is not a good time to test the limits of AT&T ability to control its wireless network.

You don't really need to state the obvious on how regular web pages are bigger than media net cingular pages.
Sorry i wasn't detailed enough. They as the community here on howardforums. If you search Tethering in ATT, there will be similar situations I am in. So heres examples

just read through those, im not the first one who is doing this. Really i'm over the fact of doing the tethering with a $20, i just wanted to know if the w580i is able to tether?

psh and when is a good time to "test the limits" of att. srsly what are you talking about...

I doubt att will notice 90mbs of data a month...not even every month

Have you ever checked your online records of data use? If you can see it they can see it. If one million people do it, that is 90 gigabytes. They have to apply the controls to each individual subscriber. Once someone gets away with 90 megabytes, they are going to try 180 megabytes. The carrier counts every kilobyte and every second of voice use. Do they give you a break and only charge you one minute when you talk one minute and one second. No, they charge you for two minutes.

ok please stop posting in here, its not getting me anywhere

Yep you can tether just fine using either USB or bluetooth. When you connect the phone to your laptop, a "USB modem" or "modem over bluetooth link" should appear in your device manager (might need to install drivers for USB - check SE's website for them). Once thats installed, then just create a new dial up connection using the COM port the phone is on, and have it dial telephone number *99# with no username or password. Its pretty simple.

wow thanks, actually didn't need to dial? hope its the right way.

Pretty much any phone built in the last decade can tether just fine.

And yeah, get the proper data plan. $60 for true wireless laptop mobility is not expensive. One price for voice service, the other for data service. Suck it up.

Cheers.
