We all know that purchasing an iPhone increases the Coolness Factor of the owner. Now a new study has shown conclusively that the cool effects of having an iPhone are not limited to the owner.

According to this study, a "secondhand coolness" effect has been observed in people who simply "hang out" with actual iPhone owners. These people in turn become only slightly less cool than the people who actually own the trendy touchscreen phone from Apple Inc.

This conclusion is a mixed bag for iPhone owners. On the one hand, the person's popularity will naturally increase as a result of new hangers-on. On the other hand, the iPhone owner may resent that people are leeching off his or her coolness without having to pony up $399 for their own phone.

Scientists are unclear as to why this phenomenon seems limited to the iPhone. One researcher, Dr. Nanu Sbojevetsky, posits that the effect is similar to the "syncing" that occurs between iPhones or iPods with computers that use Apple's iTunes software. "Millions of people have synced music, software and contacts using the the seamless iTunes software," states Dr. Sbojevetsky. "It seems to be a natural progression that psychologically people are beginning to feel that 'coolness' can 'sync' from one person to another as well, especially when an ultra-cool device like the iPhone is involved."

its just a cool phone and doesn't make you any cooler in anyone's eyes. maybe teenagers but other than that no one else. owning a Bugatti Veyron is something that actually makes you cooler.

Well, it didn't change anything for me because I wasn't showing it off and making my self cool. . . Who ever is showing it off is likely to get jumped and then get jacked especially in a high school. . . . It makes people more smug when they show it off and not even use it all the time. I used mine all the time but I never just hung out side and then just plopped it out and said "hey look what I got", there is this fat(chubby if you want to cry about it) in my school and she has the touch and she all ways shows it off but she never is cooler she seems like a arrogant person. Plus she plops it out every 5 sec just to look at it.
What the real study should be is how many people are actually using it for the features rather than just to look good using it? My friends thought it sucked even though it looked good because it lacked MMS and video recording.

people do seem to notice it a lil more....i dont pull it out and be like look what i have...but when i use it i still get the "hey is that an iphone...man thats cool"...odd considering the amount of time its been out and the price decrease that many people still dont see that many around...besides at work i dont really see that many out in public either

everyone asks me about mine...but im in Canada so its a rare commodity up here (so far) I try not and flash it though because the simple fact that no one has one here makes me feel more people are interested in theft....

At work, it's no big deal. Out of about 50 employees, something like 12 guys have one. I get a lot more reactions when I am out shopping or whatever. I think it's funny when you realize someone is trying to check it out without being obvious about it.

I didn't see it as being cool, but definitely eye candy when I pull it out. I actually had an experience today when I had to get my windshield replaced and when I went in the girl just got my papers and barely paid attention to me and after two calls with two different ring tones, I noticed she would be looking at the phone every couple of minutes. If I didn't have a g/f, I would have let her play with it, the iPhone that is.
