canadian options for iPhone?

I want an iPhone.....my current contract with telus is up next month and I have to make a move now.
I use my old crapped out GSM phone when I am in the cayman islands, so fancy GSM for canada.
If I think that the data plan from rogers is too expensive do I have a choice?
What have others done in this situation?
Thanks in advance,
Bart

iPhone only works on ATT. Can't easily be unlocked and if it is, the updates lock it again.

Check out the Apple forum for more info.

Unlocked iPhone works on any GSM provider. Keyword: unlocked. Not all features will work, like visual voicemail, but it will work. Kind of surprised to see this coming from you Dub.

Even as a Nokia fanboy, I can tell you that there are several methods for unlocking the iPhone. The only drawback is that it will void your warranty.

Outside of having somebody who works for Rogers hook you up, you'll have to pay it if you want to use it.

Well, I have been told by an Apple tech that once you try to update an unlocked iPhone, it will somehow relock to ATT. Guess that wasn't correct?

Of course an apple rep would say that haha.

The updates do, but within 48 hours a new unlock comes out.

One thing you have to be careful of is the iPhone glitch in which you can't remove your SIM and place in a new one. So you better take care of that SIM card in your iPhone if you plan on getting one.

A family member works for an AT&T call center and he encounters people calling in about this glitch all the time. Basically you need a new iPhone if your SIM breaks. The iPhone wants to lock itself into the one SIM card, even if it's unlocked.

For me, I simply use a jailbroken iPod Touch, loaded with iPhone apps, and use my LG KE970 as a phone. At least if one breaks, I have the other.

There are other iPhone alternatives too. HTC Touch, LG KU990, etc. Although they may not be your typical "iPhone killer", they do use all touch based technology.

You can take the Sim card out..A paperclip is all you need.
