What would you give to have untouched Android?

I am very excited about the potential that Android brings to the table. However, my excitement is tempered some by providers track record in locking down and bloating phone OS's.

I would really like my provider, AT&T, to open things up and allow us to put an untouched, yet sanctioned, version of Android on our devices. To me, there is still a glint of light at the end of the tunnel for an untouched Android. I put forth the iPhone's OS as evidence. While locked down "officially," there is little to no bloat/adware on it. It should be said however that AT&T is getting a piece of the iPhone pie as a part of the "keep your hands off our OS" deal.

This leads me to my question for you: what would you give to have Android untouched on your favorite device?

Personally, I would sign-on for another 2 years to show my level of commitment. I might even pay up to $40 on top of that. Depends on what I was getting.

Why would you do that? The point of android is to NOT sign a contract and buy android handsets at retail locations like target and walmart.

I wouldn't give anything. If android/linux is completely locked down, then I will stay/go with openmoko. I doubt every manufacturer will choose to lock down their handsets/drivers. With the FIC 1973 you can run openmoko, QT, e17, android, javafx, and WM. There is great potential with linux handsets.

isnt android going to be downloadable and flashed onto existing compatible handsets? so no need to sign anything.

So does that mean I can flash my ATT BJ2 without unlocking it somehow?

That would be the ultimate.

.

Real? Where has that be said? I'm guessing it will be both..like WM and Palm OS are now

Android is supposed to turn handsets into personal computers whereby applications can be installed regardless of carrier. There may be subsidized handsets but with the "open access" influx and the lack of customizing firmware, I foresee manufacturers selling volume in retailers vs the current distribution model. If android is only sold subsidized, the handsets will incur the same costs as today making them less competitive.

The carrier will become nothing more than a service provider. I have no apps installed on my home network from my highspeed internet provider - why would I want them on my phone?

With the analog TV spectrum auction things will be very open.
