hello, I'm about to buy a new w580 and
everyone's saying unlocking and debranding.
Now I understand that I can use my personal MP3s as a
ringtones if I unlock the phone, but i'm confused about
debranding.
what benefits do i get if I debrand the phone?

Unlocking is just the ability to use any SIM. If you buy a AT&T W580i it will only accept AT&T SIMs. If you unlock it, you can use T-Mobile, Rogers, Fido, etc SIMS.
Debranding a phone gets rid of all the carrier FW and is the way the phone would be if it came straight from Sony Ericsson. This is what locks out MP3 ringtones size, network selection, and other essential features.

Those other essential features include flash menus, the shortcut menu button, removes all provider stuff, like start up screens/sounds, etc.

debranding ur phone will give u the option of mp3 rintones =D so if ur only using the phone for the one provider then no need to unlock it...

Check ebay for an unlocker, usually they just email you a code you punch in to the phone and it unlocks it for you.
For debranding check out wotanserver.com They're reasonably priced. Or you can attempt to do it your self. I have done a k790a and a w580i and it went well.
Check in the modding section for a guide. There is a sticky so it will be near the top.
I am not linking because you should really use the search feature as this question is common.
