Rogers HTC TyTN questions...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey guys, please excuse my noobness as I just got this phone yesterday and am learning as I go along...

I'm running WM5, but noticed that everyone is out there trying to unlock their phone so that they can either upgrade to WM6 or install other ROMs... So my first question is, do I NEED to upgrade from WM5 to WM6? And if this upgrade is in fact highly recommended, is there a reason that HTC hasn't released it for their TyTN phones yet?

Are there reasons why I should/shouldn't unlock a TyTN in the first place? So far I learned that cooked ROMs *may* fry it, don't know how true that is... Also I know that the warranty goes void, and that there have been bluetooth issues with cooked systems... Another thing, do I need to unlock if I actually DO find a genuine WM6 upgrade (I know Cingular has one for their TyTN, don't know if that'll conflict with Rogers though) So what's the deal with all of this?? Pros and cons please lol...

PS I don't care about using it with a different carrier, and would only go through with unlocking it if I can actually find a reason to do so other than upgrading to WM6.

Thanks in advance...

No you do not need to upgrade from wm 5 to wm 6. Only reason is because has faster speed on firmware and have corrected some of the bugs found in version 5.

The reason HTC has not released it with the tytn because it comes standard in the Tytn II.

Cooked roms will not cause the phone to fry if installed properly like any modding there is a risk that the phone maybe damaged. But the Tytn most of the flashing bugs have been fixed and there is a small risk involved if you have not done your homework prior to flashing.

No you do not need to unlock if you want to upgrade.

Rogers has released an upgrade you can find it as a sticky in the Rogers forum but here the link any ways.

Thanks for the quick reply, very helpful...

So then as much as I don't "need" to upgrade, based on the bug fixes it's probably strongly suggested, right?

And it's interesting that you said Rogers released something, because I talked to Rogers as well as HTC, and they both told me that they don't have WM6 available for my TyTN, but that if I wanted to upgrade, I can install a cooked one, which would ultimately void my warranty...

So if I only upgraded to WM6 the warranty would still stick... Would I have to unlock it if I was to add a cooked ROM? And is there a benefit to it, being the reason people are doing it?

Sorry, a couple more things...

If I "brick" my phone, does it mean I gotta "reformat", or is it done for good?

Any idea if it supports 4gb microSD cards? I've read mixed things about it on the net...

Thanks again.

Unless you have damaged the chip, you should be able to reformat the phone.

Yes, it does suppport 4 gb.

WM6 is not approved for the tytn thus your warranty will be considered void unless you have upgraded through a recognized provider such as HTC, since HTC will not official release it for older phones.

most people are doing because newer firmware improves the speed and functions of most of the phone.

Again upgrading is a personal preferebce not a must for phone users.

Thanks again... One more thing if you don't mind... You said the following above:

"No you do not need to unlock if you want to upgrade."

But in the link you gave me, it says that I need to download and run the spl boot loader, and the super cid software... Isn't that essentially unlocking it?

Also, in the link above the sspl software is v.1.0 but in this link:
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php...id=30&Itemid=27

... it says that I need to upgrade to 2.10, is this true? OR is HardSPL just a whole other thing?

Much appreciated. I don't wanna screw this up :S

The tytn or hermes as it known as two locks. One is a software lock which you need to unlock to change to wm6 and sim lock to unlock your phone to use another providers chip.

Just follow directions in the thread I gave you. You may want to upgrade to the latest version of software because they maybe more stable.

Okay, so I went ahead with the upgrade... Everything seems to be successful all around, and it actually runs a little nicer and quicker so far... BUT (and I knew there would be something lol)... I've having minor issues with a few things...

First, I have no more internet connection for some reason :|... "Cannot Connect - Dialed vpn.com... The answering modem has disconnected." Worked completely fine before the upgrade...

Second, I had this problem before the upgrade, but thought it would fix itself... I can listen to music if I load up individual files from the File Explorer, but I can't get Windows Media Player to find my Storage Drive in the Library...

I'm more worried about the first one at the moment, since the second one is more than likely fixable... Thanks...

you need to reenter your internet settings again when you upgraded you lost the settings.

second problem is mostly a regisrty tweat to associate the storage drivee to the media player.

Okay... So do I get these internet settings from my wireless provider? (Rogers) Will they ask or care that I pretty much lost my warranty by altering the OS?

As for the media player, as long as it's fixable, and not a standard glitch in the wm6 software, I'll figure out how to fix it eventually... Unless there's a thread already on here I couldn't find...?

Thnx.

no need to contact rogers.

here is a cab with all the settings configered, download and install to your phone and then go the phone and click on it and it will self install the proper settings.

Yeah, I already did that, seeing as how it was in the instructions in the first link you provided... I assumed that they worked based on the fact that I can use my phone with Rogers, send receive msgs, etc...

Do you think it's worth doing it again? Is there anything I would delete if I was to do it again? Any other suggestions? Thanks for all your help man...

... Just wanted to say that I got everything working... Thanks for all of your help guys...
