Pearl vs. Curve

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey, I know this subject has probably been beat to death but I am torn between the Curve and the Pearl both for ATT (both have new act. For $99) I’m coming from Sprint, and looking for PDA type phone.

I am using the phone for 40% work 60% personal. I need a calendar/todo list/word to keep me organized with work and school, I send about 2000+ texts a months so the full keypad will be useful, I use the web decent amount, e-mail is a push I could live without it but its also covenant, IM/camera the same

batt life i could always charge it in my office as well as the car...

any input is appreciated....

I just got myself a pearl yesterday (after 8700, 8300, 8820, kinda going backward) and am learning to use the different keypad that pearl has.

I'd say curve's keypad learning curve is smaller than pearl's because curve offers full qwerty keypad compared to pearl's suretype. If you are familiar with traditional pda keypad or regular pc keyboard, you can mostly start typing the minute you have your curve. However, I started to get used to pearl's keypad as well, it just takes time for you to learn and sometimes it is harder to type in some irregular words, such as your user name, password, and url. But pearl does offer a very good custom word building tool that will learn from the word you have typed before. So i guess the longer you use the pearl, the easier and more accurrate the system will pick up the right word for you.

If you have to get one of them today, I'd suggest to get the curve. It is mainly because curve 8310 is newer model and offers more features than pearl (GPS is the king), especially when they are at the same price point. Newest pearl - 8110 will show up at ATT pretty soon. So if you like pearl's form factor, I'd suggest you to wait on that.

I'd say figure out which keyboard you prefer or see if you have a preference at all. Personally, I can't stand SureType.

I had a Pearl for a year. Switched to a Curve 8310 a couple weeks ago. Should have done it sooner. While Suretype gets the job done, full QWERTY is a lot better IMHO.

Thanks everyone im going to stop down to a store this weekend and find out what the "soup to nuts" will be witht he plans...

I had mixed feelings as well, and ended up returning my Pearl for a Curve after about one week.

I love the size of the Pearl, but the SureType is as bad as T9 with some basic words ("are" and "see" happen to use the same keys - this is very annoying). Frankly, when you're typing out an obscure e-mail address or you want to use some word that's not in your dictionary, the Pearl is a pain in the toosh. Plus, if you have your Pearl learn every odd word that you type, it remembers miskeys a lot, and then you just have more things to get confused.

The curve's keys seem really small and unhittable. My advice is to start typing VERY slowly on it, going for accuracy - it took me about three days to get up to a reasonable speed, and now I'm zipping out those messages like it's my job. Thousands a month, might I add!

And, if you're still torn, all of the celebs have the curve
(Paris Hilton, Mary Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan [sometimes])

+1

The Pearl is way cooler, but if you are sending 2000 texts per month, you will prefer the full keyboard.

Any keyboard on a model newer than the 7290 will have a bit of a learning curve. People gripe about the 88xx keyboards but you can type on them quickly once you get a feel for using the ridges on the keys.

Britney has the Curve as well in the latest tabloid pic I saw of her.

I have both the Pearl and the Curve. I keep going back to the Curve for its bigger screen, but it's buttons are a little tiny. Once I got used to suretype on the Pearl I didn't have any problem with it, and the Pearl's keys are bigger.

The Pearl has a 3.5mm headset jack, which helps with playing tunes in the car and with regular stereo headsets... hopefully the next AT&T Pearl will have a 3.5mm jack like the Verizon Pearl does.

What didn't make sense? Not sure how to rephrase...

Almost everyone I know that got the Pearl has either switched to the curve or wish they got the curve. Only a few women I know that primarily only read emails and make calls prefer the Pearl. In fact they are reluctant to write mail beacuse of they keyboard.

If you text and type a lot, definately get the Curve. The Pearl shuretype works if you're the type that is patient eough to learn how to use it. I certainly get frustraed with it.

The curve is relatively small as well (unlike my old giant 9700c) LOL

In fact, I prefer a slightly bigger phone, but that won't stop me from getting the Curve when it comes to Sprint this spring.

Okay, now that I actually re-read my post it didn't make sense and I apologize. I meant to say the Curve has the 3.5mm jack I prefer, and hopefully the next AT&T Pearl will have that feature as the Verizon Pearl does.

I've never used the Curve, but i love my Pearl!

Keyboard was easy to get used to and typing on it is so much better than using a phone keypad with T9.

It is what i wanted, a PDA that is the size of a normal phone. I dont want to carry around a brick
