HTC PPC6800 & Touch MAJOR ISSUES

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

After having my HTC PPC6800 with Alltel for about 4 weeks now I am experiencing some major problems. First I should say that from what I have learned the problem is with HTC.

The first week I got the phone it would regularly cut off and and or lock up. Upon calling Alltels high tech support I was told it's a known Glitch/Bug with this phone while using a Bluetooth device. Not a huge deal as it can be fixed by simply performing a "soft reset". I have to soft reset my phone at least 5 times a day.

A much larger and far more irritating problem began about three days ago when I noticed the phone not ringing that much. While checking to make sure I had everything set correctly I also decided to check my voicemail. Turns out I had 8 messages and the phone had been on me the whole time. After trying several things myself and still having just about all incoming calls go straight to voicemail I decided to call Alltels High Tech Support again. Turns out I am told there is another known Bug/Glitch with not only this phone but also with the HTC Touch as well. According to the folks at Alltel this has been going on for about 4 weeks now and HTC of course is working on a patch. Any incoming call I get goes straight to voicemail unless the backlight for the screen is on. I have that set to stay on as long as possible but that is only 10 minutes if plugged in 5 if not. It's so pathetic it's actually funny, this phone truly want even ring and there is no current fix I am told.

These are only my experiences with this phone. Are others having this problem as well? Does anyone else know of any known fixes for these problems?

If you don't mind soft setting your phone 5 times a day and then missing 90% of your calls than this phone is great. I still don't understand how I couldn't find any bad information about the HTC PPC6800 before I bought it. Before you buy the PPC 6800 or the touch I would find out about these isues.

I heard similar complaints when considering my Touch from Sprint. I bought 2 phones one for myself and the other for my wife. The wife's phone did that once the first day but we have had no problems since. Mine has never had that issue.

I can't imagine what causes it for some and not for others. Do you sync to your PC?

^anything can be manufactured wrong... u can buy a "lemon" phone just like u can a car...

Posted by: whaley195

I do regularly sync to my PC. After viewing some more posts the suggestions was made to remove the storage card. I have done this and so far the problem has not occured. For now it appears at least in my case removing the storage card helped.

I hear more of this happening with the tough, quite often actually

I've had my Rogers Touch since December and haven't had any problems with it, though I probably just jinxed myself to that end.

I have the EXACT same issue. It is pretty terrible. It happens to me with text messages, emails and voicemail notifications as well. This phone has turned me off of HTC for good. It sucks that I'm stuck on a 3 year contract with this phone.

I have had the Sprint Mogul for more than a month now, and I have never experienced any of these problems.

My brother and my niece for more than 2 months no problems either.

You might have a bad phone, or mem card. I would try replacing the mem card with another one and see if it happens some more. If it does, send it in for repairs, that ain't right.

I have had my phone since October and I started with a few problems dealing mainly with bluetooth connectivity and quality of sound. Also phone was running real slow. I updated the rom on my phone and now things are running fine. I have a lot of programs installed on my phone and it still runs pretty good. Bluetooth is fine except some complaints about hearing all background noise but i'm content with this phone. I would have upgraded to a Touch but i need the keyboard functionality.

Mine is doing the same sort of crazy stuff, refusing to answer, and even refusing to soft boot! In addition the BT hardware malfunctions and refuses to connect to my headphones. Then on top of that the call and edn keys refuse to work. But after it falshes and buzzes everything works again for a few hours. I've only had my touch for a week, so at first I thought I was doing something wrong. Reassuring that at least some other people are having similar problems. I'll try taking out the 2 GB storage card and see if that helps. Nice to at least find a suggestion.

Posted by: imersion

After replcing the storage card it has worked smoothly for a day.
Now I'll try to insert a new card and see what happens.

Posted by: thegurusteve

I have experienced the same issue with my Mogul. It has happened with the storage card in, no storage card, etc. I have updated the software and everything. Sometimes the touch screen still won't work, the phone won't answer, or what is even more frustrating is that the phone won't ring until I take it out of "standby" mode (pushing the power button to go from dark screen to light) and it will immediately ring, and show a missed call. Regardless of when the person called it will show as though I just missed the call, but the call actually happened sometime ago even at times a few hours ( I called myself to see). Anybody have ideas?

Posted by: imersion

Well the storge card fixed nothing. After a few days the same problems came back.
I returned the HTC for another one; and this one works fine with all the same storage cards, etc.
There was some sort of hardware fault.

I'm familiar with all of these issues... and at least as far as the Sprint version of the Mogul and Touch are concerned, they are all "known issues" with fixes supposedly in the works. Stay tuned.

Just like the OP, I too have the 6800 on Alltel and I have the same issues. I am expecting an update very soon. Probably first week of April because Alltel is getting the new Bluetooth stack tested. I was told by a Supervisor this and he said expect it in April.

I have been having the same exact problems...I took it to an Alltel store yesterday. Just happens the manager of the store has this phone and has been having the same issues. She recommended having Alltel send me a new one and sending mines back to the manufacturer for repairs. However, she advised that since I had a few minor scratches on mines from an occassional fall or two that they might refuse to repair it and state that the problems are related to customer abuse. She said she knows there's a glitch out there so we went ahead and started this process. I am waiting for my new phone. If they refuse to fix it then she states we will file it under my insurance which means a $55 deductible. This is horrible because it will likely happen again until they fix this glitch. I love the phone and its features, but can't take the missed calls as I use this phone for business purposes and lose out on many business opportunities.

I got my first ppc6800 back in september of last year and i had absolutly no problems with it.. until i bricked it... i got my replacement 3 weeks ago and have had no issues with it... it may just be the alltel/sprint versions of the 6800 that are having issues.

One thing you could try to do is a hard reset and then a soft reset right before it starts installing all the extra stuff the altel and sprint roms come with.

None have said which ROMs they are using and it seems to be mostly trouble with those on Alltel. An old and buggier OS ROM (AllTel's last release was v2.14.671.3 all the way back to August....) and/or radio ROM?

These are not complaints that I have seen from those in PPCGeeks or XDA-Developers who tend to use the latest radio ROMs customised OS ROMs that are based upon the latest carrier builds and drivers.

These problems that people see likely already have a solution. Rather than blame HTC, it appears that your specific carrier has neglected resolving the issues for you.

i had 4 p400's last year from Telus. Fourth one finally worked ok. Then our company switched to Bell and the same issues appeared right away on their 6800.

That's is extremely dated and lacking information.. Too difficult to state what issues? Unfortunately that doesn't help at all one attempting to choose right now.

As stated many times over, all of the early teething issues with the P4000 (bluetooth, receiving calls, alarms, etc..) were resolved with software updates. Those issues no longer exist for people now as the device simply works and is as stable as hoped.

Well I was having the same issue as everyone else and what Alltel told me is that on our phones HTC did not do the Bluetooth connectivity Microsoft did so Microsoft was supposed to release a patch but HTC beat them to it and it is located at the following site for anyone still having problems. I am in the process of downloading and will let you know how it works or if someone else has done this please let us know if it corrected the problem
Thanks

Anyone figure this out for the Sprint Touch?
My girlfriend and I both have the Touch... I can suspend (using the power button) and still receive texts/emails/phone calls that wake the phone up....

She has the same settings as I do (that I can tell) but receives nothing when she puts the phone on standby.. I am totally confused as to why it would happen on one and not the other.

Any tips would be helpful. thanks

Hey everyone. I think I know the issue with it not ringing in sleep mode. And, we're not alone. On ppcgeeks.com there was a posting about the same issue. It was 28 threads long. Hunderds of people posted issues similar to ours. I had the same problem with it not ringing as well. Major issue due to my phone being a business phone. Anyway, what I ended up done with flashing. the first flash I did I still had the problem. Then I flashed it to another persons ROM and it worked. Since then I haven't had an issue since. I called myself at least 40 times that day in sleep mode and each time the call came through.

So, what I think it is, is a ROM issue. Find yourself a good ROM somewhere and use it.

Oh, I use my phone with Cricket so I used Cricket based ROM's. However, i bet if you find a ROM here on the forum with your carrier, one of them will work.

Anyone aware of an official response from any providers? I have Sprint and wonder if I would be able to swap the one that is having this issue. Very strange that it affects only some of them (in my situation, both Sprint Touch's were shipped within a week of eachother and one works, one doesnt..)

I have the HTC6800 from Bell Mobility in Montreal. I love the phone because it plays well with Outlook, but the sound is mediocre, and the multiple daily soft resets are a pain in the posterior. I replaced the phone after one week. Now a month later, they will replace it again. Any news on the patch that is supposed to be forthcoming?

I've had my Alltel HTC PPC6800 for 8 months. Sorry, correction. I am on my second one. I sent the original one back for all of the known problems listed in this thread. I experienced them all and without using Bluetooth. After getting the second phone in March 2008 I was told by tech support that all of these were a known problem yet no patch had been created to correct the problem. Alltel seems to have been aware of this known problem since October of 2007 when I purchased my first phone under a 2 year contract. Might I mention that what drove me to send the 1st phone back was at the suggestion of a Alltel store manager. I was at the vurge of losing my patience when my phone would not accept a soft boot. She shipped me a new phone and I synched the old one to my computer then put it in the box and shipped it back to Alltel. I then synched the new phone to my pc to transfer my data from the old phone to it. Our plan was to attempt to have Alltel either repair or replace my original phone without billing me for damages which the Manager said they will do if it seems that the outer casing of the phone has scratches on it. So, best advise is keep it in its case as much as possible to avoid scrapes from falls. However, if Alltel refused we were gonna file it on my insurance and I would pay the $55 deductible for the 2nd phone that I got. It worked out that Alltel has thus far paid for the second phone. I have found that deleting your call history list does help a little with the 'missed' call issue. This was suggested to me by the same store manager who also had the same phone and told me about a few workarounds that she used to solve her problems.

Everyone I know who has this phone is also dealing with these problems. All I can say is deal with it or lets find a way to do some kind of class action suit!

Best of luck!

As I mentioned earlier, I have Alltel and there is a ROM patch on HTC's website (click the link) The patch has been out since April I think and my 6800 now works flawlessly. The patch even includes some well needed updates most notably a true X to close button. Look at the HTC website and see if you can get an updated ROM with your provider.
