Total Noob Help?

Note, the only cell phones Ive ever had were provided by my work, and now I am looking to buy pair for my girlfriend and son.

I have NO idea what manufacturer phone, plan ect is a good way to go. All we need is the very most basic cell phone/plan. One of the phones will rarely be used at all, the other maybe a few hundred minutes a month. No cameras, texting, emailing...interneting...etc needed.

Hope that covers my objective, and I hope someone can give me a couple tips on what to look for and where. A link would be even better.

Thanks.

Have you considered going with a prepaid plan? Depending on your location, some of the prepaid companies may offer what you need, a basic phone, and basic calling.

Thats just HOW new I am. Without doing any research, until this very first step, pre-paid sounds like us, but will have to check it out further.

FYI (if it helps any future helpers/posters) we are at 35603.

And Im sure there are many buy one, get one free phones?? Or even free phones??

Links??? Thanks again.

Check the coverage maps from the big 4 (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint) and see which one gives you the best coverage.

You could get pretty cheap phones to use on prepaid with AT&T and T-Mobile ($40 or less).

Coverage maps lie. Look at them for reference only.

35603? Is that Alabama?

You need to first look at where you will use the device(s). Consider where you live, work, travel and play. Coverage maps will give you an idea, but talk to family, friends, coworkers, etc to see which carrier they use and how it works for them and where they use it. Then pick a carrier and get a phone to try it out. Most have a trial period so you can make sure they provide the coverage you need.
