RAZR2 text message sounds

Just got a new Razr2 V9.

I know that with my old V3, if I assigned a custom ring tone to a contact, the text message sound would also use the same ringtone. The problem was that I couldn't tell whether it was a text or phone call based on the alert. This was a recognized issue with the V3's an couldn't be changed.

I was hoping that the V9 would have this fixed. I can't seem to find a way to make a contact have a custom ring tone and a separate custom text message sound.

Any one know different?

Since when? I have a V3t and it has a different sound assigned for text messages and ringers customized for friends...worked fine.

My V9 has a different ringer and message alerts. No problems here...perhaps it's a firmware issue?

Or perhaps you're changing it from the themes or settings instead of customizing the ringer from the contact?

That's encouraging to hear you're able to assign the different alerts.

I have custom ringer id's on some of my contacts.

The text message alert is set by the default theme -- I'll change to another sound

This didn't work before with my V3t, but hopefully will work with the V9 -- I'll try later today when I get my phone which I forgot at home.

My RAZR2 has different alerts for texts, IM's, voice calls, and video calls. 4 different sounds to get used to.

Hi everybody,

I got RAZR2 V9 few days ago and since then I'm trying to get rid of this annoying Ringer ID problem!!!

So, if you assign custom sound to specific contact (in Ringer ID setting for that contact), the voice call AND sms tone is the SAME!!!! I tried to do all kind of combinations (national prefix, two same contacts with prefix and without) but nothing works!!!

So yesterday I quitted and said, OK, I don't want to have any kind of alert or sound when SMS arrives!

BUT the problem is still here!!!! Even when you set sms alert to SILENT or VIBE, when contact for which you assigned custom sound send you a sms, damn phone still plays assigned sound!!!!! It's unbelievable!

It seems that Ringer ID feature overrides all other sound settings! I can't believe that this is something that guys in Motorola consider as normal!? I mean such a great phone with such a big glitch.

Does anybody know how to get rid of this problem, at least to shut up phone completely when sms arrives!?

Thank you very much for help and suggestions!!!

It may be a carrier-specific firmware issue.

My Rogers branded V9 works as expected and I have separate sounds for ringers, texts, MMS', calendar events, etc.

I don't know why your phone is not cooperating...all I can suggest is read the manual again and make sure you're assigning the ringers and alerts properly.

Hi bfksc and thanks for replying!

Maybe it has something to do with carrier, cause I noticed that I have to edit my contacts, and to add national prefix to every number in phone book I have. This is the only way that I can make V9 recognize Caller ID! (I transfered contacts from my Sony Ericsson phone)

...but have you tried with assigning some other sound as the Ringer ID to a just a few contacts from your phone book?
I have this problem only with contacts (few friends and wife) that I assigned sound, as Ringer ID, other than "main sound" selected in Settings-Ring Styles-Style Detail-All Calls.

I would definitely think that I'm doing something wrong if I didn't read about the same problem that motorola users are having on several other forums.

Thank you again!

Some people have had success fixing this the way they want.

You'd have to make sure that you are not using the default theme's notice for text messages in the settings for the theme. If you set that to a custom notice it might over ride the setting for Ringer ID you have in Contacts/Address Book.

This works with a few phone versions, but not others.

The setting is in the "flex" portion of the sofware (Code Group 3) and cannot be changed via seem. It's also hard to move this code group from a phone that originally came with it to a phone that originally did not have it, due to RSA issues and the fact that the code groups sometimes occupy different memory locations on different phone versions.

Thank you George for reply!

I tried to do what you've suggested (...and I'm pretty sure that I'm not using default theme's sound, since I transferred this sound I'm using from my PC via Bluetooth...) but, unfortunately without success.

Anyway, your explanation of phone software helps me a lot! At least now I now that this is software "problem", not me doing something wrong.

It seems that I/we have to wait for some kind of software upgrade or workaround.

Cheers

To solve your problem in the Ringer Profile you have to turn off Ringer ID. if a contact has a specific song set to them it will still play for voice calls, but the text message will be whatever you set it to in ringer profile.

If you turn off Ringer ID, then the default ringer will over ride the ringer you've set in the Address Book.

At least that's how it is with the AT&T variant.

I'm using the ATT variant and thats what worked for me. turning off ringer ID in the ringer profile will let you use the sounds you set, but the ringer ID set through the contact will over ride the voice call ringer. Try it out.

I actually stumbled upon it last night accidently. My GF sent me a text message at 2 AM and her ringer woke me up.. it was loud so I temporarily set ringer ID to "off".. when she text me again it was viberate like I had set in the ringer profile. then she called me and it was her ringer ID and not the default ATT sound.

Posted by: hrvoje123

If you by "Ringer profile" mean Settings>Ring Styles>Style Detail>Ringer IDs on/off, then George is right...unfortunetely problem remains for me too!...
...even when I use default provider's sound.

Anyway thanks for contributing!

For the Bell Z6M: When "Ringer ID's" is set to "ON," any personal ringtones set for contacts are selected first and the default ringer second, for all other calls. In that case a text from a personalized contact results in whatever ringtone is assigned to it over-riding the default text alert/tone. If "Ringer ID's" is set "OFF" then only the default ringtones, alterts, etc are recognized. None of the personalized ringtones are activated with that set to off -as is mentioned in the Bell Z6M user guide on page 67.

OMG!!! Motorola is actually considering this a FEATURE!!! Unbeliveable!

Posted by: xclusivex

Cancel that, it must of been a glitch. my buddy just called me and it was the default tone again. I don't know why it was working last night. oh well.. hope they fix this

Posted by: hytran

Ah, hope springs eternal

"Hope they fix this"
"...a FEATURE"

It's been this way for a looooooong time - read that as YEARS. If it hasn't been fixed by now, I wouldn't hold my breath

BTW, the Z6 (and presumably the other MOTOMAGX phones) works as those in this thread would like - texts get the default ringer and calls get the ringer ID. Or at least MY Z6 works this way...

So when you assign a Ringer ID on your Rogers v9 it doesn't over ride the text message sound of your ringer profile when that person text's you? If this is true is it possible to flash the ATT v9 with rogers firmware?
