There is 3G coverage in practically every area around east-central Ohio, like out in Columbus and up north in Canton, but none here yet, like along I-70 crossing into WV. Word has it that this area will have 3G soon. Does anyone have any idea when though? Thanks.

I thought canton already had 3g along with cleveland and akron

Canton has had 3G since at least November 2006.

Canton is part of the northeastern Ohio market.

Will the Dobson coverage get a 3G overlay / be expanded?

Yeah I wondered when they are going to fit the newly purchased dobson equipment with 3g. I also wonder if they will fix the coverage gap along seventy seven between macksburg and marietta. (mile markers 14-9)

I think this is going to happen when the networks are integrated. I've heard integration is coming as soon as summer, but so far on the network from this end I've noticed no change since AT&T took over. The switch here still reports itself as YTG.

and also maybe fix that coverage gap. i thought they already had to network integrated. but then again i could be wrong bc the rep the other day was talking about how dobson hasn't even been switch over to att billing system.

I'm pretty sure none of this has been done yet.

not sure but i know it does take a while to get permits with the county and local government. You might be able to get an idea by checking their records.

At one time, the Pittsburgh-Cambridge-Parkersburg-Clarksburg area was known as the Pittsburgh Metro region. I've heard allegations that this area, especially the Marietta/Parkersburg area will be 3G by the end of Summer at the latest, at current plan.

I hope so... just south of you in Parkersburg and I am looking forward to seeing 3G lit up here....

I haven't read up on it extensively and how ATT has been implementing 3G so I'm interested to know/see how coverage changes/improves/degrades after the 3G completion. I recall when we went from TDMA to GPRS it was a degredation during the overlay, then from GPRS to EDGE again, etc.

Right now I have the best coverage I've had with ATT on any system, but like someone else mentioned I'd like to see that coverage on 77S cleaned up. It's the largest gap I've seen on 77 and I've traveled a lot of it and 70. If I hear anything else I'll post.

I've also heard that Verizon put a tower up in Boaz, WV, and is converting the GSM WV Wireless towers over to EVDO.

Verizon hasn't been present in Eastern Ohio area as Alltel is here, but I know Verizon is now selling in St. Clairsville. It will be interesting to see if this heats up coverage competition in this area.

Since Verizon has built out across all the major highways in eastern Ohio, it has been a very positive move. It is great that at&t has a large carrier to compete with in these markets. Well besides Alltel and Sprint. This will likely push at&t to upgrade its network in this area to stay ahead.

Agreed. My company uses Verizon globally (vodafone in Europe) but in little Marietta Ohio we have Alltel because we can't get local Verizon numbers here.

ATT in this area could use some competition, and I'm glad they are here and were here leading most other carriers. At least in my experience Sprint has been much more of a modern competitor here as far as data and phones go, but their native coverage was very sketchy.

Alltel had great coverage, and up until the last year or two, was sketchy on handset options and data options. I mean really, they've only had blackberry for something like 2 years. Amazing.

Alltel has come a long way, Verizon is moving in, it appears, and ATT is going to upgrade.

Imagine the coverage we'd have if everyone used the same technology. Will that happen with WCDMA?

No, but we'll be closer with LTE. As everyone goes to LTE (hopefully Sprint and Alltel will follow in Verizon's footsteps) then we'll be back to one unified standard, just like in the AMPS days.
