Bricked an Ocean

My daughter's Ocean will no longer fully boot. She set a corrupt image to the background. As it is booting from a hard reset the phone gets through the Helio splash screen and left to right progress bar, as it is attempting to load the background image (which is corrupt) it just flashes and displays the splash screen again. It will not respond to keyboard input, soft key, power buttons, etc. The customer service rep at helio stated that the phone has to be replaced. This doesn't seem like the greatest solution since all contacts, software, etc. will be lost simply by setting the background to a corrupt image.
Has anybody heard of this? Better yet, heard of this and can offer a solution?
