:: Guide - Upgrading to 1.1.3 (BL3.9) v1.0.1 ::

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Drakkhen

Hey Guys,

As promised, I've taken some time to pool together the info I've found around the internet regarding upgrading to 1.1.3 and have put together this mosaic of a guide that, hopefully, will make your transition to the newest firmware easier.

As with my previous guides, I'll make an attempt to cover all the basics in FW terminology, as well as explain why I do certain things as much as possible. This is the first version, so if you do have something to contribute to this guide, please let me know, and we'll incorporate it into a subsequent version.

Thanks in advance to all the forum members who contributed to the unlocking threads, especially dhendriksen, JEsTer10, tigres013, and anyone who posted anything on http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1322240.

Thanks whatever those dev/elite people are called these days...Thanks...Seriously...

Very special thanks to Geohot and his IPSF clone!!!

- Terminology and Concepts -

- Phone Requirements -
We will be upgrading to 1.1.3 through a clean install of 1.1.2, so no matter what, this guide will take you through an upgrade path that consists of jailbreaking a 1.1.2 phone.

- System Prep -

Here's a list of a bunch of other stuff you'll need:
- Part 1: Prologue -

This step is for 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 users only. If you're already on 1.1.2, just skip down to 'Part 2: Starting on the same page'.

01. On your iPhone, go into Settings->General and set the Auto-Lock option to 'NEVER'.

02. On your 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 phone, make sure your Installer is a the latest version, and make sure 'Community Sources' is installed. Community Sources can be found under the Install section in Installer under the 'Sources' category.

03. Once this is done, navigate to the '1.1.1 Tweaks' category in Installer, and install Oktoprep. This little util will prepare your phone so that it may be jailbroken after the update to 1.1.2.

04. Connect your phone to iTunes and UPDATE to 1.1.2. If you've already allowed iTunes download 1.1.3 onto your computer, or the latest firmware file your iTunes has is 1.1.1 (or earler), you'll need to download the 1.1.2 system file (refer to System Prep section) and [SHIFT]+[Update]. DO NOT 'RESTORE' TO 1.1.2, as this will erase all the chanes to the system Oktoprep made, and you'll have to start the process again by downgrading back to 1.0.2 or 1.1.1.

05. Once the upgrade is complete, you will see the iTunes cable with a bunch of different languages fading into each other. Welcome to the 1.1.2 activation screen! Unpack the entire 1.1.2 jailbreak package into a directory, and run 'jailbreak.jar'. If you see a black screen pop in and out, you probably didn't unpack all the files into the same folder or don't JAVA runtime installed.

** Note that I find it easier to trouble shoot any type of batch problem in a command prompt, as you will be able to see the errors if they do come up instead of being quickly flashed by a illegible black screen.

06. Once run, you will see the GUI interface of the 1.1.2 jailbreak application. There are a few options here, but you can ignore them and go ahead an click on 'Jailbreak'. The process will take a few minutes, after which the phone will reboot twice, and you'll be greeted with an activation screen that says 'Slide to Unlock'. Welcome to your jailbroken 1.1.2 phone.

** At this point, if you're happy with 1.1.2 and want to use it as a phone, install (but do NOT run) anySIM 1.2.1u, enable 'Airplane Mode' in 'Settings', and run anySIM 1.2.1u. After anySIM completes, disable 'Airplane Mode' and you should have a fully functional 1.1.2 phone.

- Part 2: Starting on the same page (The Jailbreak) -

Now that everyone is on a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone, the real fun begins. After this section, you should end up with 1.1.3 phone with your original baseband. That is, if you started out with baseband 4.02, you'll still have that baseband after this section. if your phone was working before, it should still work after this section as well.

01. First thing is first - Go to Settings->General and make sure Auto-Lock is set to 'NEVER'. If it is already set, good for you. If not, DO IT! Also, if you're not connected to Wi-Fi, right now is a great time to do so.

02. After that is done, go into Installer and refresh your sources. If you've just come up to 1.1.2, you may be prompted to upgrade your Installer. Update and restart Installer.

03. Make sure the following are installed in Installer:04. Once installed, exit installer and you will notice a new icon on your Springboard. Tap on it to start the upgrade/jailbreak application.

05. At this point, the app will ask you if you want to remove user settings and content (basically after your upgrade, all your contacts, music, and applications will be gone). Make sure to go this route, as it will give you the cleanest install possible for 1.1.3. This process will take anywhere from 20 minutes to over half an hour depending on the speed of your internet. At the end of this process, you should have a jailbroken 1.1.3 phone with the same baseband that you started out with.

- Part 3: Another Piece of the Quilt (Baseband Upgrade and Unlock Prep) -

Before trying this upgrade myself, I did a bunch of reading on the Geohot's IPSF clone. Some said that when you run this script, the baseband should download automatically, while others claimed that it didn't work for them. I decided to give this a shot, and unfortunately, on the two phones that I ran the script on, neither downloaded 4.03 baseband for me. In turn, it rendered my current baseband unusable. So, to make this as trouble free as possible, I've combined a few guides out there. In this particular case, we are going to use iClarified's baseband upgrader to upgrade our baseband. Thank you, iClarified!

01. In Installer, add the following sources:02. Refresh your sources, and install the usual suspects:and also in this order:03. On your computer, Use WinSCP or Fugu to FTP into your phone's IP address. The username is 'root' and the password is 'alpine'
04. On your computer, navigate to the /usr/bin folder of your phone and create a new folder named 'ipsf' (any name will do)
05. Extract and copy the contents of Geohot's IPSF archive into the newly created ipsf folder, and give every file full permission (i.e. 0777)
06. On your iPhone, navigate to the 'iClarified' category in the Install section. There you will find the Baseband updater. Installing it will take about ten (10) minutes, again depeding on the speed of your Internet. After the install, your baseband will be at 4.03. You will find that you have no signal, and your sound may not be working. You also may not be able to see your baseband in Settings->General->About.

- Part 4: One Final Turn of the Key (Baseband Unlock) -

Here, we've come to a fork in the road. To recap, we've upgraded and jailbroken our firmware at 1.1.3. We've also upgraded our baseband to 4.03. The only thing that is left to do is to unlock the baseband so you can use the device as a phone. Well, there are two ways of doing this. The first, is the well-known anySIM. Version 1.3 works, but like the past versions probably won't hold up to a baseband upgrade. If there was an upgrade to the baseband, you're probably waiting for anySIM 1.4 before your phone will work as a phone again.

The second option is the one that you have already prepped for: Geohot's IPSF clone. This unlock method is upgrade resistant, but is slightly harder to undo in case you wanted to virginize your phone. It is possible, but invovles backing up your seczone file so that it can be restored at a later date.

- Part 5: Clean-Up Time (Backup your seczone - for IPSF users only) -

Take this opportunity to backup your seczone file by using WinSCP or FUGU to download the entire IPSF directory from the iPhone to your computer. Keep this folder safe for the duration of your ownership of the phone, as it is the only thing that will let you undo the IPSF unlock in the case that you need to virginize your phone.

After all this is done, you may notice that YouTube keeps on saying that you have to connect it to iTunes before it will work. To remedy this situation,
Well, I think that's it - Sorry again for the wordy novel - I hope this helps some of you out, and as I mentioned at the beginning, if you do see any striking omissions, please tell me so I can revise the guide. Thanks to everyone who helped me out!

Cheers,

L.

Man, I gotta tell you... Well done and nice job. After I read this a couple of times, I will post back with some additions from my own findings.

Again, well done.

awesome post / guide Drakkhen! I think I will be going through using this in a couple hours! Thanks for all the time you put in to this!

Posted by: forenplayer

Now that's what i called a guide! You even motivated me to upgrade

Posted by: Drakkhen

Obivously, if there's anything that's unclear, post them here, and at the end of the week, i'll round up all the posts and added solutions and incorporate it into the guide, with credits and changelog - that way, in a couple of weeks, we should have a 100% idiot proof guide

Drakkhen, thank you for taking the time to post this comprehensive giude. The major problem, though, is so many people, including myself, simply cannot get our phones to update properly to 1.1.3. I have tried 4 times and have had to start from beginning each time.

I bought a refurb on 9/15/07. It came with 1.0.2 OTB. I'm currently JB and UL at 1.1.1 . According to my serial number its at week 51.

Is it possible I have a 3.9 BL?

If you are unlocked, then yes, you have bootloader 3.9 - except if you are on AT&T, in which case, you wouldn't need to unlock anyway

Question, which way is the unlocking community going? Anysim or Geohot IPSF. I know the pros and cons of boy but which will have more support in the future?

What state is your phone in before the update, and when you say cannot update properly, what is happening to indicate this?

Now what if I'm a current att customer without any kind of iphone plan. We were cingular customers until yesterday when we upgraded phones and got new att sims. I am still running 1.0.2 and only jailbroke it and activated it with my old cingular sim card, no programs installed. It of course doesn't work with my new att sim card. I don't want to unlock the phone just do as little as possible to activate it with my new sim card and possibly 1.1.3 as the locate feature seems kind of nice.

Should I follow this guide? Do I have to jailbreak to activate with a 3g att sim card? I believe I could just install independence and activate this new simcard with the current firmware i'm on but i'm thinking about 1.1.3. If I were to "activate" my att sim with independence and then upgrade through itunes it wouldn't just work would it?

Thanks

It's hard to say really - Time will tell - I think IPSF will win out for people who just want something working - now that it's free, it's a one-time thing. I'm going to guess that hackers who are constantly doing different things to their firmware and baseband might want to stick with anySIM. I see both existing at least for the near term.

This really depends on what you want to do with the phone - If you just want a jailbroken phone, all you have to do is follow the steps up until the end of the jailbreaking procedure. That *should* be all you need as you're running AT&T.

Drakkhen, just read through this again and a couple things. I was idling in one of the iphone irc channels and someone had the problem of while running the official dev 1.1.3-3 jailbreak, they received phone calls (i am not sure if they answered the calls) but they said this messed up the process. i believe leaving them with a bad imei and having to go through many different processes to get themselves back up and running. however, it was suggested by a user in there to remove the sim while doing the soft update so that way there can be no interference. do you know if this would work and still allow things to run? if so, may be something good to add to the guide.

secondly, im not sure if you want to include how to revert the ipsf unlock in this guide or not. but if you do, here is a link that i have heard covers the process: http://george.zjlotto.com/index.php...-040313_g-bl39/
scroll down to the "Revert to Original" part.

edit: changed to specify reverting the geo ipsf unlock

That's a really good point actually - I never even thought of what would happen if I got a phone call while doing the soft update. I think it would really depend on the stage of the update, as if it was just downloading it would be harmless.

So, if we take out the SIM card before we tap on the jailbreak icon, and put it in after we are back at the springboard with 1.1.3, that should pretty much do it right?

During the unlock process, you are either in airplane mode, or IPSF would actually shut down commcenter. I'm going to test this out tonight.

From what i understand this is correct. I think the user was at the updating part of the soft-update when the calls came in. I may test soft-updating soon with no sim in, but am trying to decide which unlock method I should go with first haha.

Come to think of it, that doesn't really make sense, because the Soft-update doesn't actually do anything with your baseband. It's only firmware stuff. The one thing you want to be careful of is the amount of crap you have installed on your phone - you want to make sure there's plenty of room on there.

With regards to your anySIM vs. IPSF - right now, anySIM is a much easier way to do it, as the IPSF doesn't have a graphic UI. If you go anySIM right now, you can always revert and go IPSF after...

Very nice work Drak!!! I for one really apprecaite it.

I guess if anyone confirms running this successfully over a 1.1.2 IPSF unlock that would be helpful to know. I think Drak's experience was done over a virginized AnySim, but I could be incorrect.

Posted by: Drakkhen

I tried this two times: once with a completely virginized phone, the second time with anySIM unlocked baseband 4.02 - Both with same results.

I think for IPSF phones, you really don't have to do the unlock again after you run the baseband upgrade. The only issue is that you'll have to find a way to run 'signal.app' once you reboot your phone. Geohot's script does it automatically, so I think if we take a look at his scripts and eliminate the actual unlocking parts, we'll get a micro-script that 1) installs Signal.app, and 2) runs it on boot-up.

I'll look into that tonight

L,

Posted by: JEsTer10

Drak, don't you just have to make sure "signal.plist" is in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/

for signal.app to run automatically at reboot?

Posted by: Drakkhen

Yep, but you also need signal.app installed with the right credentials as well - If we can get a script, then it saves a lot of headache...

Posted by: JEsTer10

Drak, when you run the soft-update. should you say yes or no to patching lockdownd and hacktivating?

Posted by: ashkash00

Do all features work on the phone using AnySim and IPSF? I am particularly interested in the Locate Me feature of 1.1.3 as I read somewhere this does not work on unlocked phones at 1.1.3, but I might be wrong. thanks.

Posted by: n0greenfx

iv gotten a phone call while using the software upgrade too 1.1.3 and it screwed everything up and i had to virginze my phone and start over i suggest going into airplane mode before doing this.

yep, all features should be working. i believe google maps locate was not working with just the soft-upgrade, because it left you with a different baseband, not the 1.1.3 baseband. if you are upgrading the baseband, which you would do if you are unlocking 1.1.3, then everything should be working. (im in the process of doing all this right now, so i can let you know from my experience shortly)

edit: thanks drak, that is what i thought, but just wanted to be certain. maybe add that to your guide as well, so it truly is "idiot proof" haha.

Both versions work - It only won't work if you stick with the old baseband.

I donm't think Airplane Mode will work, as we need wifi to download the software. I think taking out the SIM card before your start is the only option.

yea my bad wat if u get a call running the ipsf script?? should the sim be taken out for that too?

I'll let you know how this works, I am going through the soft update process now, its downloading ipsw. I took out my tmobile sim and put my att sim in that came with the phone, so I of course have no service. Hopefully everything still works this way...will post results when I am done.

At that point, the CommCenter is disabled, so yoiu wouldn't be able to get any calls..

i didnt want to start a new thread so heres my problem. i did the 1.1.3 upgrade just like how the guide says. everything is great the only problem(bug maybe) is that when i get a text and i hit the ignore button(or if im in a program) i dont get the red circle with the number above the text.app. is it just me or is it the firmware??

p.s Drakkhen you rock!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Airkat

Interesting. I finished part 2, and now I'm stuck with the connect to itunes screen so I can't even get in to begin to install things.

This is right after running the long 1.1.3 official updater. Did I miss something here?

*edit* anyone else having this problem, here's your way out: http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...11&postcount=28

Hey Drak, great guide. I am glad we were able to get something like this over here. Thanks for taking some test runs on this as well. I have a couple of suggestions, but will post those later. I am slammed at work lately, hence me not being around much the last couple days to see all this progress.

Keep up the good work!

Posted by: JEsTer10

ok i have completed it all. 1.1.3 fully updated, unlocked and jailbroken. i decided to go with the anySIM 1.3 unlock for the time being. a few notes i made throughout the procedure for you Drakkhen:

1. ok, at the end of my soft-update it hung at 'attempting to reboot' after a while, i just forcefully rebooted it (sleep/wake + home until it turned off, then turned it back on).

2. when i got back in, i had to set auto lock to never and reconnect to my wifi.

3. you have to install termvt100 before you can install Term-vt100 SUID fix

other than that, everything went great!

Posted by: floepie

Perhaps you can also add, and I think I'm correct in saying so, but if you are currently running 1.1.1 unlocked with AnySIM, you don't need to virginize, as either you have already virginized in the past (having used the very first AnySIM from 1.0.2) or you have a 1.1.1 OTB.

As far as I'm aware, the AnySIM 1.1.1 does NOT require one to have to virginize once again. Care to comment?

BTW, FANTASTIC work on the guide!

You are correct, as the guide suggests that you only have to virginize if your phone was unlocked using anySIM 1.02 (1.0.2FW). This implies that if you have a phone that is unlocked any other way, you are good to go.

L.

Posted by: floepie

And, just to be clear, the AnySIM 1.3 is the "leaked" AnySIM (from Zibri), and NOT the official yet-to-be-released DevTeam/Eliteteam AnySIM, correct? There is a sticky over at the other forums urging others not to use it.

Finally, I wonder if Geo's new IPSF unlock will correct the problem it has with the lockdown, necessitating the startup of the signal.app at each boot. Not that this is a problem now, but it could create problems down the road. I suppose you can always re-virginize with your backed-up seczone, so it probably is a non-issue.

Thanks a lot for the guide. It was pretty much a piece of cake following your instructions.

It was pain but when I was uninstalling all of my 3rd party apps my phone froze and I came back to the silver Apple logo. So I ended up restoring to 1.1.1 again and followed the guide.

the only issue I had was when I tried to connect back to my WPA network after installing all the apps in Part III. I had to disable protection and reset the network settings on the phone.

but everything went off without a hitch.

I am completely lost now...
Hey,

I tried Drakkhens method for upg to 1.1.3 and unlocking. I originally started with a 1.0.2 FW with the anysim unlock. It was older base as well (3x or something.). All was going well. I had reverginized and upgraded and unlocked 1.1.2 and everything worked well. I went to do step 5 in part 2 and clicked no to "hacktivating" and cleared everything as you said. I think this is where I went wrong...

I probably should have said yes to hacktivating. But what happened is I was left with a phone that just showed the iphone cable and would not let me into the springboard.

What I did then is tried to follow Drakkhen directions to downgrade to 1.0.2 from this post http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...11&postcount=28. However, everytime I tried I was left with a phone that would get stuck at the please activate screen, again not letting me into the springboard. I tried a bunch of other apps (ibrickr, apptap, packay, etc) and could not get into the phone.

I would also get an error from itunes saying to make sure that ssl 3.0 was enabled. It would not read the phone after I got it back to the awaiting activation screen.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Thanks Drak! I used your guide with anySIM, and my T-Mobile phone is now completely working on 1.1.3. I was very skeptical and worried about updating, but this was a GREAT guide. I really appreciate the work!

Posted by: Gdog123

Incredible guide dude, definitely ranks as "epic"...I will have to try this out once I can get a back up phone prior to my update.

Question do we have to install:

Quote:
and also in this order:

* SUID Lib Fix (Tweaks 1.1.3)

* Term-vt100 SUID fix (Tweaks 1.1.3)

* BSD Subsystem 2.0 Termfix (Tweaks)

If we are going the AnySim route? or should these be installed anyway? I assume the last 2 are needed for 1.1.3 (password stuff I think), but what does the SUID fix do? Thanks!

Yep, I think I can help you out here - You are right, you went wrong when you selected no for Hactivation (I should've put that in the guide, and the next revision of the guide will reflect that change) -

You're current 1.0.2 troubles can be easily solved by using iTunes 7.5 or earlier. (DFU restore to 1.0.2 using itunes 75 or earlier). For some reason 7.6 does something with the 1.0.2 firmware that doesn't allow you to jailbreak/activate the phone after you restore it :|

If you ever want to install and use Term-VT100, then you should install these anyway, as if you don't you're not going to be able to log into your phone with the command line locally.

For those who are on the fence about this upgrade, I tried Google Maps LocateME today. I was using the "LocateMe" app before, and that put me a few miles down the street. The Google one actually put me on my street, and the middle of the target was pretty much between my house and the neighbors. The Google app seems far more accurate if that's a feature you think you'd use.

I am stuck!
Everything went fine until it was time to run anySIM 1.3
for some reason it gives this error message:

"please restart your phone.
You must set Auto-Lock to Never in settings(General/Auto-Lock) to continue.
anySIM will now quit."
the problem is I do have Auto-Lock in NEVER
I uninstalled most files and applications to free up memory but that didn't help.
I'm afraid I gonna have to restore and start from the begining.
Has this happened to anyone else?

In the unlocking step, after I download everything from Installer, I do not know how to FTP into my phone... I'm using a mac, but I don't think it will really matter...

If someone could tell me how to FTP into my phone, I can finish this... Thanks!

Posted by: C-Dub

I had 1.0.2 and followed the guide up to including step 2. From this point if I want to usethe anysim1.3 unlocking solution, can I just do

Part 2
Run the Upgrade/Jailbreak app

Part 3
iClarified Baseband Updater

Part 4
anySIM1.3

Basically asking, can I skip all the steps about WinSCP, extracting Geohot's ISPF to phone, etc?

Thank you

with a mac, use a program called fugu. it's free and make sure you have installed openSSH on your phone from installer. within fugu do the following:

Connect to: iPhone ip #
Username: root
<hit connect>
Password: alpine

that should do it for ya.

Yes. if you are unlocking with anySIM 1.3 you can skip steps 3-5 in part 3.

For those who upgraded to a unlocked & jailbroken 1.1.3, can you use the previous apps from the installer / 3rd party as on previous fw?

When I use FUGU, I get a message saying "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!" And it seems then to just go back and do nothing....

Not me. I ran it from JB 1.1.2 then soft updated to 1.1.3. But the results should be the same, no?

Yes it is. It's just hidden. Open a terminal and type in "cd /" then "ls -l" and you'll see the entire root level of the HD. At the bottom, you'll notice "/usr".

The iPhone file system layout is very similar. They're all based on a Unix OS, so they follow those standards. When you view the HD in Finder, it hides folders from you that aren't for your direct access to limit damage by an untrained user.

I'm adventurous DHendriken I found it in terminal, but following this guide, I'm supposed to go into the folder then the BIN folder and then create a new folder.

Is there any way to unhide the folders to make it easier? So I can just go into "Macintosh HD"? Thanks

What are you trying to do exactly? Can you provide me a link so I can guide you a little better? I'm kinda new to OS X, so I'm not sure how you make "hidden" folders visible in Finder... I am sure that info is somewhere online though.

Hey man, if nothing else, this is how you learn! It's good to be adventurous!

Macintosh HD is the hard drive on your computer. You are supposed to be creating this folder on the iPhone. Read the instructions several times before you start.

Thanks richy! I'm following the guide in this exact threat on page 1... I'm on the unlocking step that is telling me to use FUGU to go into the iPhone. That's where I'm stuck now...

I have FUGU up and running and then get the message when trying to connect to the iPhone saying "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!"

Any help would be appreciated!

DHendriken- Ah ok.. Didn't read carefully... Anyway, I'm trying to get connected to the phone but I must be doing something wrong in FUGU... Read the message I'm getting in my post right above this one...

Also, I don't know if this matters, but I'm not getting any phone service on the phone right now.

Oh, ok. I didn't follow these directions, so I'm not too familiar with the procedure. When I'm done with a couple other things, maybe I'll get to reading and have some more information.

Either way, I just want to get the phone unlocked asap, lol

I didn't notice this is the thread for 3.9 BL - I have 4.6, and THOSE are the instructions I followed. They're not update-proof though.

Yeah, I'm only slightly retarded this morning. Sorry guys.

Ok, I'm on my PC right now, so I cannot test this, but...

If you reinstalled SSH on your iPhone, the known_hosts file is specific to your previous SSH isntallation, and needs to be regenerated. This happens automatically the first time you connect.

Hope this helps!

I read somewhere that 1.1.3 expects the mobile user's password instead of root because of the difference in how application permissions are applied (they run as mobile, versus the root user in past FW versions). I don't yet know how this applies to your situation exactly, but that might get you started.

Legaleye3000, I hope you don't take this offensively, as I don't mean for it to be, but I think it may be a wise idea for you to stop where you are at, go back thought and read the directions carefully before proceeding. In a situation like this, using things it seems you are not familiar with, it is best to ensure you have a understanding of the steps you are following. Also, it would be best for you to have any files that you are going to need to use downloaded on to your comp before going through the process, i.e. the geohotz unlocking tools, etc. I don't have time right now to find the link for you, if you still need it later, i will post the link. Again, I hope I'm not offending you, just slow down a little and hopefully in the end you have a working unlocked 1.1.3.

Hey Jester- I mostly got it... Can you tell me if the archive has the files "gunlock" and "secpack" ? Is that the right archive I have?

If so, are those the only 2 files I need to put on the phone or should I put the other 2 files included, which are: gunlock.c and runme.sh ?

Thanks- I'm so close, I don't want to stop... Ummm... yea that sounded funny

Sorry, but this is exactly what I mean. First off, if you are trying to unlock a 3.9BL phone, following this tutorial, the files you have are absolutely NOT what you want to use. I believe those files are for unlocking 4.6BL phone and had you run them on yours, that would have been bad. Secondly, the files you are looking for are linked right within this guide! Go back up, look in the system prep section and you will find a link to the archive you need under: "Geohot's OpenIPSF Unlocking Utility -"

Like I said, please slow down because you are over looking things, which will lead you to an ibrick-possibly. You do know what bootloader (BL) your phone is running right?

Posted by: Legaleye3000

Baseband updater is installing and I copied the correct files you pointed out in the above post...

I'm about to go to the next step "Option B" in the guide

Posted by: Legaleye3000

After everything is unlocked, can I get rid of the termVT100 program and anything else I had to download on to my springboard...?

Do I need the "signal" program after I unlock and everything is working?

Thanks!

Posted by: jeffd

Just want to say thanks to Drakkhen and all others who helped in this thread, I followed the guide and all is well. I had the "only 4 icons problem" after doing the soft update part from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 so I just downgraded to 1.1.1 and started fresh and all went as planned.

Ok, got it working... Thanks

Posted by: Legaleye3000

I guess now (which I hope is the last thing I need) is to put in the T-Mobile Edge settings.... Where can I find those? Thank you!

Posted by: jeffd

do you have the $20 internet plan or going to use the proxy hack? If the $20 plan just put in the wap apn. If using the hack... then you gotta hack!!

Posted by: Legaleye3000

Well I have the blackberry plan (I'm assuming that won't let me get internet on the iPhone...).

If I can't keep the bberry plan, I'll switch to the $20 plan.. not TZones $5.99.

By the way, does the T-Zones $5.99 give FULL internet on iPhone or not?

Posted by: jeffd

I just upgraded to 1.1.3 and manually installed the T-Zones hack. Glad to report that it still works. Here are the new directories:

proxy.pac goes here:
/private/var/root

preferences.plist goes here:
/private/var/preferences/SystemConfiguration

Posted by: jeffd

if you do the hack then yes you get the full internet, some say its slower and some say it's the same speed. I find out it's all about your location. I have the grandfathered $2.99 plan so I use the hack.

Posted by: Legaleye3000

Ok, so if I want to stay w/ the $20 plan, what do I put in for the settings... It seems no hack needed cuz there's a menu right in "settings" on the phone itself...

Thanks

This was the easiest of all my updates. I installed that upgrader program from installer and once it finished it was STILL unlocked. All I had to do was download and run that first program (I was on 1.1.2). I thought for sure this would take hours and at least 5 attempts.

umm.... if you only did the first program (the softupdater) then you only did the firmware, not the baseband. That is what the second program does.

Phone was unlocked on 1.1.2 with anysim 1.2.u. Boot loader is 3.9. I chose to use the anysim 1.3 path. All steps completed successfully, except once anysim 1.3 finished, I am unable to pick up any service. All I get is 'No Service'. I had my T-mobile sim card in the phone for the entire process. Any ideas or links on how to fix this?

What is the con to staying at the current baseband?

Posted by: jeffd

Lots of things do not work. Like google locate, and stuff. You have to do a bunch of patching. If you read some threads from a week ago you will see.

How big of a pain is the baseband update? It is odd, I am here fairly frequently but somehow only stumble across the updates today. I guess I haven't been in the hacking and unlocking section that much.

EDIT: I followed the iClarified instructions, it was fairly painless, mostly just waiting. Thanks for the heads up, no I am running 1.1.3 and the later baseband (and Google Locate works properly).

That is very strange that googe locate works unless you are also using the "locate me" app. If you run that it will start google locate but only until a reboot. Are you sure you do not have the 4.13 baseband?

Any Idea where to go from here? Any help appreciated. I hope Im not phoneless now.

also during the software update process from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 i did get a phone call that i didn't answer, simply declined. I don't know if that messed up the process at all.

Did you get your baseband downgraded?

I was in the same boat as you. After following this tute, I got NO SIGNAL. Tried a few fixes, but non worked, so I just restored to 1.1.1, and downgraded my baseband. I used this tute on iclarified . Was easy. Give it a try.

No going to try updating to 1.1.3 again.

Posted by: JEsTer10

to the 2 of you who got no signal...did you unlock with geo ipsf method? if so, did you try running the signal.app? it for some reason may not have been copied to the right place, therefore not running on reboot. you should have signal.app on your springboard though. if you do, run it and it should give you signal. if it is not there, you should move it to there and run it.

Posted by: injdog

i had problems updating the baseband. program would hang, and eventually give me an error. I installed geohot's unlock script from installer, and used genunlock in terminal. That worked and I'm up and running, now. I have no idea why i has having trouble updating baseband with iclarified's program.

and yes, i had signal.app on the springboard. It didn't help me.

Posted by: nlee

I wondering - once you've successfully run through this process and the IPSF unlock, is it safe to do a restore in iTunes, or should I start over fresh?

Also, just so I'm clear, the IPSF unlock is technically supposed to upgrade-proof, correct?

Thanks for the awesome instructions - it worked perfectly for me!

Posted by: JEsTer10

nlee, i am not sure about your first question..why do you want to restore anyhow? or is that just for future reference?

but about your second question...yes, i believe its *supposed* to be upgrade resistant, but only time will truly tell.

I have since virginized, upgraded the firmware to 1.1.1 and used installer for the sim unlock. So now my week 36 iphone is using fw 1.1.1 and probably the 3.9 bootloader.

I want to upgrade to 1.1.3, and wish to have the fully function locate me feature of google maps for use on T-Mobile.

Is this the right guide for me?

People have reported on other forums that this occurs when you update from 1.1.2 after having used AnySim 1.1.2 to originally unlock a 1.1.2 update.

I fixed my no signal error by downgrading all the way down to 1.1.1. Everything is good now.

ok I got to part two step 5, and the phone keeps saying it's "attempting to reboot..." but has been stuck on that screen for quite a while.... I wonder how soon until I should get concerned.

//edit

too late. held the power and home key and it seems to have rebooted now. not sure what to do next... it's stuck on the data cable screen and itunes icon. Right, Jailbreak 1.1.2 doesn't recognize if the phone is connected... i'm so up sh|t creek if i bricked this baby.

I give up, i'm doing a restore and update to 1.1.3

i'm probably doing the wrong thing here since i've deviated so far from the walkthrough. oh well, mental note not to work on my phone so late in the evening.

I probably did a huge nono, and went ahead and had itunes update on it's own to 1.1.3. I felt like I had no other option since the phone was unresponsive and wouldn't even power down. So now I'm back to the data cable itunes icon screen. I did a field test call, and it says FW version 04.03.13_G.

Little help anyone? Where does this leave me, what should I do?

So essentailly you are at an OOB 1.1.3. You have several options. I would suggest doing the following as it is the easiest and quickest (from what I read):

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1325601

If you don't know how to do that then you can always back down to v 1.1.1, Restore twice, use AppTapp to dring it out of recovery mode, Jalbreak and thn oktoprep, update to 1.1.2 (not restore) and then run Geo''s IPSF unlock listed under the source iclarified and then soft upgrade to 1.1.3.

I'm not sure what lock you had on your phone before starting, but you should search the forums as you can also use the first link and Jailbreak/Activate and Unlock with AnySim 1.3.

You have lots of choices other that to have an unusable phone.

Good luck,

Awesome, so I made myself lose sleep all night thinking i made a royal mess of things, and i'm essentially left with an out the box 1.1.3 iPhone? I almost find that hard to believe with all the mistakes I made along the way.

what is your bootloader? 3.9 i am guessing since you are in a 3.9 thread? if so, then you are certainly not essentially out of the box, considering they are 4.6bl. with 3.9 you should be able to remedy almost any situation i believe.

Well, someone tell me if I got this right or not per the instructions on this tread:

Last night I started out with a fw 1.1.1 with a bl 3.9 on a week 36 phone that was updated from 1.0.2

I did all the prep work via installer to update to 1.1.2

I updated to 1.1.2 and came to the cable/itunes screen

I ran the 1.1.2 jailbreak

Phone rebooted twice then I went into installer, added the Official 1.1.3 Upgrader app for upgrade and jailbreak

I ran the Official 1.1.3 Upgrader app, it did it's thing for about 45 minutes, then hung for about 20 minutes saying it was rebooting.

and this is where the fun begins on my part........

Due to my impatience, I sent the phone into recovery mode, pressing pwr/home at the same time.

Now my phone is unresponsive, will not power down, and is stuck at the data cable itunes screen.

Itunes will only allow me to recover 1.1.3

So I did.

From the history shown above, am i still at the 3.9 bootloader? Am I safe to use Ziphone? Am I candidate number one for an all in one gui app instead of command line?

You will always be with the 3.9 bootloader, you are just playing with the basesband and the firmware.

ouch, bad luck there. well first, you are definately 3.9bl as that wont change. secondly, when i did the soft-upgrade, mine also hung at rebooting. i simply hard rebooted the phone and everything worked. however we are past that point.

if you press and hold sleep + home buttons, will the screen go black and phone shut off? if so, do this..and once the phone is off let go of the sleep button, continue holding the home button. from here you should hopefully be able to restore any firmware you want and then hopefully go to wherever it is you wanna be.

check zibris blog as he now as a working osx version and ziphone with a gui i believe.

I see what you're saying. send my phone into recovery mode. get itunes to restore it as fw 1.1.2 by pressing shift+update, select 1.1.2 saved localy on my pc and then pickup from where i left off?

If so, I'll probably give it a try in a couple hours after work.

Thanks in advance to everyone for your help. But I'll definitely drop back in and update my progress.

Hi, I just went through the guide starting with the "part 2" section. My phone is unlocked at 1.1.2 and working fine. I used anySim to unlock it at 1.1.1. After going through the guide my phone is still at 1.1.2?! I saw the downloading, decompressing, decrypting..etc messages. The last one I remember was that it was Jailbreaking. Then I noticed it reset and was at the apple logo. When it came back up it was still at 1.1.2 with all of my data on it. Should I just try again? The only other thing I should note is that my phone is maybe half full with music etc. 3.3gig are available though.

Thanks so much for your help!

Jeff

I put it in recovery mode, it wouldn't let me go back to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, both times it returns with "an unknown error has occurred.(1)"

help? at this point, I just want it working again unlocked on t-mobile. couldn't care which firmware is in use.

I'm a bit lost here - are you getting that error when running a restore/upgrade, or are you getting that while runnign ziphone?

I get that error when running restore/upgrade via itunes. I haven't even tried ziphone yet.

Got to the Baseband updater part and after it finished installing/updating, my phone rebooted and is now stuck at the Apple sign (won't go into restore mode). I sent Drakkhen a more detailed PM so hopefully he can figure it out, otherwise I'm out a $500 phone

Actually, it wasn't the baseband updater that made it reboot. The baseband updater caused it to go back to the emergency screen where all the languages flash so I used ZiPhone as suggested and that caused it to reboot and remain at the apple screen.
