Best SE for TMO that has real web browser?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: JMann23800

I am switching from Sprint after 10 years and I want to get a SE phone to use on Tmobile. But I guess I need a one with a real web browser to add the $19.99 unlimited internet, which I want because it has T-zones(wifi) included that I can use with my laptop at starbucks.

So what are my options for an SE phone that I assume is quad band that Tmobile will allow me to add the unlimited total internet to?

Oh and I am mainly interested in the SE phones because they have push email w/o having to go the blackberry route.

Thanks,
Josh

If you want a good "real" browser, I would personally recommend a Nokia S60 based phone. Something new like the N95/N82/E51 - as they all have great built in browsers. All those phones also have built in WiFi.

For SE, you probably want a A200 platform based phone as I don't believe the A100 phones have very good built in browsers. The only 2 that are currently available are the K850 and the W910, and both are pretty buggy ATM.

Of course, you could always pick up any SE phone thats quadband w/ EDGE (QVGA screen resolution recommended!) and just stick Opera Mini on it which works about 95% as good as the Nokia browsers, and are a lot faster too.

Also, you know you can browse the full net using the $5.99 tzones plan on Tmobile, right?

K790a is the best bet
most of SE models equip Netfront browser, but K790a has better res, as well as it has decent cam

Ya, k790 is pretty good.

No I didn't. The way it is worded it makes it sound like you can only access a wap type site. And I don't really care about a good browser, I just want to be able to purchase the "Total Internet" add on for $19.99 because it includes email, web, and hot-spots, whereas if I have the $5.99 plan, I would still have to purchase the hot-spot add on and its $25.98 which is more expensive.

I guess where I am confused is the "Total Internet" is only available to add to a phone if it is considered a smartphone. If I purchased the k790 would I be able to add the total internet fo $19.99 to it or only the $5.99 internet and have to add hot-spots seperately?

Lastly, isn't the k790 only triband, will it work ok on tmobile?

I am not sure if the push mail on SE phones really work or not. I haven't tried it myself, but I was once told that it's network dependant and US carriers don't support it.....

You can add total internet by calling CS and just told them you have a smartphone that tmobile support (eg wing), or if you want to do it yourself online, just select a smartphone in your profile and the total internet option should appear.

Strictly speaking, tmobile network only operates on 1900 band, but if you roam in certain region you may need 850 band. If you get k790a, then it has both 850 and 1900 bands so you'd be fine. The only reason you may want a quad band phone is to use it overseas.

I don't see whats so special about hotspots? I mean, doesn't Starbucks offer free Wifi at their locations anyway? Why would you need a special play from Tmobile to get access to that?

You can access the full net on your phone using the $5.99 tzones plan. You can even tether to your laptop using it, though you'll have to go through the proxy which is a bit of a pain, but doable. The $20 plan does not use the proxy and you should be able to tether unfettered.

I don't know which starbucks you go to that have free wifi, (are you sure you're not just sniffing the wifi from neighbours?), but the ones I visited ain't free.

to define that
Total Internet is FULL GPRS/3G internet for ALL devices (includes tethering)
you can even use PSP on starbucks hotspot

I do a lot of work at Starbucks, Borders, or Barnes & Nobles all of which use Tmo hot-spots and they sure aren't free... $10 for a 24 hour pass. So for me the hot-spot is a neat feature.

Gergor, I did see that push email might not work.... but couldn't find a for sure yeh or neh. That would suck if not, because that is the main feature I really want.

Just to be clear, Starbucks and borders use Tmobile, but B&N does not, I think it may be using AT&T.

I haven't heard anyone who claimed to have push mail working on Tmobile. However, I believe you can set the phone to check email every certain time interval. Or, if you don't mind using text messages, you can setup alert to get a text whenever you get a email.

Posted by: JMann23800

Hmm, I could of swore B&N used Tmo by me.. but maybe not... I never paid for the day pass there just usually borders since they have a better cafe and plugins for my laptop.

BTW, I also want to hook the phone up to truck for the mp3 player... I have an adapter that uses a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. I know the K790 doesn't have a 3.5mm jack but I found this: http://www.amazon.com/Eforcity-Head...n/dp/B000J6FWTO

Any idea if that works as advertised?

It really works. Greatest thing since sliced bread (Gmail java applet). Very fine stuff. How it does it I know not, but it is waaay cool.

YMMV and I certainly cannot vouch for all the possibilities so let us just note the one configuration observed and in use here: De-branded W580i (per thread here somewhere) set up to work with gmail. Also used it to fetch from a large private IMAP server but could not send for want of proper SSL signage or something.

Just think -- all the functionality of a crack berry without having to put up with one or pay for it.

The adaptor in Post 13 looks very much like standard S/E adaptor as supplied with W810i and W580i. No problem feeding music to car system. I use a cassette adaptor to do it. Seems like cnn.cn also offers a little FM transmitter dongle.

I thot the OP was talking about the push mail feature inside the SE built-in email client.

Posted by: JMann23800

Yeh, I was.. so I guess the SE software doesn't work for push email as stated on their website for tmobile? I just have 2 pop accounts I want to check and the push email was a good perk to an SE phone.

Posted by: tszefr

Oh sorry if I wasn't clear enough. Gmail applet does not push. S/E email tool does however, and in my example is configured to send and receive via gmail, thus making it arguably better than gmail applet for the task.

Oh I see, could you share with us how to set it up? I'd like to try it myself. Thanks.

Posted by: Gergor

I did a little research on it, it seems in order for push mail to work, the mail server side needs to support IMAP IDLE. It appears that gmail supports it, but I was told that yahoo mail doesn't

Oh ok, that actually works out because I have my websites hosted with site5.com and they support IMAP IDLE.

FYI I heard a few days ago that Tmobile was no longer going to be available at StarBucks in the near future.

Happy to... First go into gmail and setup pop/forwarding. Enable IMAP.

Now on S/E create your account. They are supposed to be able to send the stuff but I didn't get that to work. Account details:
1. Connect using -- your proxy that has to work. Media net, for AT&T example.
2. Email addr address@gmail.com
3. Connection type IMAP4
4. Incoming imap.gmail.com
5. Username address@gmail.com
6. Password
7. Outgoing smtp.gmail.com
8. Advanced settings...
8a. Incoming port 993
8b. Outgoing port 25
8c. Outgoing user address@gmail.com
8d. Outgoing password
8e. Encryption incoming SSL, outgoing TLS
8f. Push email On
8g. Check interval Off

I think that is it. Have fun!

Tmobile will no longer operate the hotspots in starbucks, but it'll still be available for TMO users, at least for 5 more years.

Sorry I have to disagree. Imap server is right; pop.gmail is for pop3. Can you get push with pop3 service?

The outgoing port is correct. Mine is however set on 25 and works. Guessing that since TLS is specified it must override port 25 and use 465. I just fixed outgoing port and left TLS and that works too.
