I have a blackberry curve and I was told I could just hook the usb cable up between the phone and the laptop and I could then surf the net using my dataplan from at&t but it doesn't seem to be working.

Is there software I need to download from somewhere?

Thanks

1st off when u plug the phone into the computer with the USB cable the computer may ask u for software. Thats when u insert the CD that came with the phone and it will find it and install it...
Then u need to call ATT and have them add the Tethering option to ur bill which is another $40 per month ON TOP of ur current data plan so that u can use ur cell phone as ur modem.
If u had the HTC Tilt, it would be free cause the software is already installed into the phone, u just find the icon, click on it, connect the USB cable to the PC and go bck to the phone, click USB option and hit connect.... DONE, now ur tilt is ur modem and ur surfing at 3G speeds...
Or u can do it thru bluetooth but u need a bluetooth dongle for ur PC for it to work..
Thats one benefit of the Tilt over any other smartphone / PDA. And ATT has no clue that Tilt owners are tethering unless ur MR HONEST and tell them and shell out $40 per month... or do it the sneaky way and not tell them and just watch the amount of data u pull each month... anything over 5gig's per month and they will turn their heads toward u..!!

i thought there was a way to make it work w/out paying for the tethering option though?

Wirelessly posted (HTC_Hermes Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.7))

You can tether on a MEdia Net plan providing that you plug your phone in via USB and then install the AT&T Communications Manager, which is the pgoram that actually establishes the connection. You can Google and download it from another connection.

Just FYI, tethering with a MEdia Net plan is against the AT&T data terms of service, which means you can possibly be disconnected if they so choose.

The tethering add-on is $30.00 and not $40.00 if you have voice on the same line. You can only get the tethering add-on for a PDA or Blackberry.

Not sure where ur getting ur info from cause my brother pays $40 on top of his $20 data plan to tether his laptop.. That is why i said $40... and that is the same price quoted to me cust Serv when i asked them about tethering my Tilt.
It was a few days later that i figured out how to tether it without them knowing...

IF u are caught tethering... The way they catch u is by u downloading over 5 gig's per month... then they know something is up.
Ur average person with PDA or smartphone does not round up 5 gig's every month. I have the tilt and i tether maybe 5 days out of of the month, the rest is surfing direct from the phone and i only rounded up 1.5 gig's in jan...

Your brother changed from the MEdia Max 200, which does not allow official tethering to a PDA data package which does. The PDA data package without tethering costs $30.00 and with tethering costs $60.00. Didn't you read the chart to which I linked?

You are apparently using the MEdia Max 200 instead of the proper PDA data package also. Also be aware that you lose your 200 messages when you switch to a PDA data package. The 200 message add-on costs $5.00.

You can easily go over 5 gigs a month on a tilt.. Slingbox and XM 7.9 gigs last month

you can tether on the 15 dollar media max plan, at least i have been doing it for years. as long as you dont abuse it. just stick to email and web surfing only, it shouldnt be a problem. no dvd downloads from bittorent!

Lots of misinformation in this thread:

1. The only software you need is the Blackberry desktop software. It needs to be running when you use your berry as a modem.

2. I have unlimited data on a BES plan, no need for any add ons for tethering. But then again, I might use it about 4-5 times a year. I have an EVDO data card for my laptop and only use my BB as a modem when I have no coverage, which is hardly ever.

3. Follow these directions: http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index....kBerry_As_Modem

It should take less than 15 minutes to set up. Good luck.

There was no misinformation. The approved way of tethering with AT&T is to have either a PDA data package or a Blackberry data package with the $30.00 tethering add-on. What you are describing is the under the table method of tethering. You should not be misleading people. You might be quoted later as speaking ex cathedra.

u havent seen seen his bill, i have.. $20 per month for the media max 200 PLUS a SEPERATE $40 add on for the tethering which comes out to a total of $60... on top of his rate plan. i know what i saw. which is why he is gonna drop his current cell phone and get the tilt so that he can tether without paying extra....!!
its bad enough att rips us off (comparred) to other providers, we need to get our moneys worth...

Produce a screenprint with any personal infomation obliterated. It is easy to describe a pig in a poke when no one else can see it.

Lighten up. I might not know what ex cathedra means but I do know that isn't misleading.

I still can't tether with vista and my curve!

r u paying the extra fee for tethering..? the only phone i know of that can tether without without paying extra nor having att program ur phone for it is the tilt... the tethering software is already installed, all that needs to be done is finding the icon and turning it on... and either using bluetooth or usb...

Whether I am paying for it or not, the DUN service should still be reflected when you pair the bluetooth phone with your computer.

From what I can tell, it is a Vista issue and not an XP issue. Any phone that has the correct bluetooth profile that includes DUN will work for tethering.

Well, paying for it or not can be an issue on WHY u cant tether.... That is why i asked.
I have vista with bt and my tilt tether's just fine. But my BT does not have DUN, its PAN (personal area network). That is what i click on when i want to connect to my tilt to surf..

Posted by: mrmaster

Hmmm...I'll look into PAN to see what's up with that.
