10 February 2008 The Sony Ericsson W980 brings an unrivalled music experience that gives you every excuse to lose yourself in acoustic bliss

Barcelona, Spain – 10th February 2008 – Sony Ericsson today revealed the W980, a Walkman® phone that promises to get the most out of your music. Its unique audio enhancing technology, together with the Walkman® on Top design, sees the W980 cement Sony Ericsson’s position as a true market leader in the world of music on your mobile.

“The W980 Walkman® phone really sets a new standard for music on your phone,” said Ben Padley, Head of Music Marketing, at Sony Ericsson. “We wanted to design a leading music player that we could combine with a feature-packed phone, all the while pioneering an audio experience that always left you wanting more. The W980 will surpass all expectations.”

W980 Walkman® phone Created with music in mind

• Clear audio experience
Superior sound quality lets you enjoy your music as it was meant to be heard
• Walkman® on Top
Intuitive music access and control,
• Storage solutions
8GB internal memory lets you store up to 8,000 songs*

Be true to the original recording
The W980 Walkman® phone is designed to allow you to listen to music as it should be heard. Clear stereo enables the music to sound like the original recording. Clear bass delivers distortion free sound even at higher volumes. These features combine with the premium headphones, the Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77, to deliver an incredible clear audio experience and music that sounds as true as possible to the original recording

Share your music with friends
The W980 Walkman® phone has a built-in FM transmitter, which allows you to send whatever’s playing on your phone to other devices with a built-in FM radio receiver. This gives you the ability to share your music with all those around you, whether through a friend’s hi-fi or your car stereo.
Quality music is made for sharing with the W980. Unplug your headset, sit back and let the music flow through the integrated stereo speakers for all to enjoy. Select a track from the extensive music library – the W980 lets you store up to 8000 songs* – or tune in to your favourite radio station and listen out loud. No need to plug in an FM Receiver, since this is on-board with the W980.

Build your collection every day
With the recent evolution of PlayNow™ arena, Sony Ericsson’s popular over-the-air (OTA) and web download service being launched this May, you will be able to access up to 5 million tracks to maximise your music collection. The W980’s TrackID™ feature, which can identify any track that you just can’t put a name to, will be fully integrated into PlayNow™ arena. This makes the W980 a genuine gateway to great music, as you can download the track instantly once it has been identified.

Customise your sound
You can tailor the W980’s Walkman® player to the music that you’re listening to. This latest Walkman® phone provides a choice of eight equaliser presets, each of which contains a distinct profile that is suitable to a range of music. So whether you’re listening to jazz, pop or heavy metal, you’ve can always choose the best sound for the song.

Control your music at your fingertips
The Walkman® on Top feature on the W980 gives you the full functionality of a Walkman® player without even having to open your phone. The entire Walkman® player that would normally be displayed on the inside of your clamshell is also replicated on the outside of the phone, so navigation through your music library is effortless.

Balance and beat
Every music enthusiast knows that a great audio experience requires great quality speakers or headphones. The W980 Walkman® phone comes with the new Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77; a headset that lets you enjoy music in powerful stereo sound. The HPM-77 also allows users to take their calls handsfree, and its sleek design and in-ear wearing-style mean that it’s both comfortable and reduces background noise to the bare minimum.

Whether listening via the headphones or the stereo speakers, the W980 Walkman® phone is a must-have for those who want an unrivalled music experience, which they carry with them every minute of the day. It is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 GSM/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in selected markets from Q3 2008.

The Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77 will be available in selected markets from June 2008.

Looks impressive but no auto-focus and no external memory slot leaves me scratching my head in wonder.

This will definitely make the Z800 people happy. Phone looks sharp -

...............
Another new SE feature..built in fm antenna and built-in fm tramsmitter.??
A music lovers dream..and nifty lights too!!
Hope the cam is decent..it may be a real winner

I like how the presenter says, "There is not autofocus or flash. It's a dedicated music phone."

I think the reason why they were able to have the radio transmitter built in because of the clamshell form factor (more internal room than a bar form phone).

Hopefully this would be a trend in all W-series phone no matter what the form factor.

It's quite interesting how no autofocus is becoming a Walkman phone standard.

The last Walkman phone with autofocus was w610i, i believe.

They're making sure that there is a difference between the c-series and w-series.

Now, if only we don't need HPM-70's with our phones, [just plug in the headphones directly], then that would be so cool...

Yet, with this phone you get the HPM-77

I guess that's why I'm going to hold on to my W610 for a little while longer. It's nice to have a W-series phone that does have AF (and not feel like a brick).

Now THAT'S one sexy phone.

Posted by: raj2k

does anyone know if the phone will take pictures while it is closed (using the external screen), similar to nokia n75 and n76?

Posted by: beilei

finally a decent flip phone with a 3.15 mp camera. Nokia N93 was just way too big!
Anyone know when will this be out in Canada? and aprox the price of this baby?

I'am curious to see a picture taken by this phone.

I'am veryyy interested

Then what interface would SE use for all those cool accessories? USB? even with MicroUSB it would be horrible like what HTC uses on their devices for headsets. Oops sorry hardly any accessories at all. No thanks, Fastport will do just fine. I'd rather the phone answer/hangup button on the tether instead of the headphones themselves.

with 3.2MP camera - and its a new one btw; I think the auto focus will not be such a matter of focus/attention in daylight or indoor lighting if its sufficient.

Question, are those navigation "circles" raised bumps in the surface? ON side shots one cannot see them.

All in all great design, but with only 1GB of memory, no ability to increase with an M2 ... its too small even with 120bit AAC tracks. Most ppl STILL have their MP3's in 160bitrate as an average.

The phone has 8GB of built in memory, not expandable though.

I've waited so long for a nice walkman flip from SE!

Posted by: beilei

same, waited long for a nice flip with a decent camera

getting it as soon as it's available

Posted by: beilei

I just want to see some camera pictures posted taken from W980, even though it doesn't have auto focus, I'm sure it will be fine

Posted by: Prom1

@beilei, I'm hoping the camera pics will be similar to what I've seen from teh W890i shown on esato. its VERY good in outside daylight.

Posted by: Tehy

wow! The phone looks awesome:

here's more W980 live photos

Posted by: Phone Diva

Your link seems broken, but the one in your post looks great!!

Posted by: christomapher

Sony Ericsson W980i almost for teh win... To fully take advantage of the TrackID and PlayNow music downloading services, it would be nice to have North American 3G support for high speeds. Also, what's the point of having any kind of camera features if you can't even illuminate or focus on your subjects when necessary?

They are coming closer to making some good stuff!

let's hope so

The only thing I don't like are the keypads, it looks like my childhood plastic toy cellphone design from zellers

Posted by: beilei

I also read that it loves finger prints

Posted by: Phone Diva

That's kind of obvious from that photo. Shiny smooth plastic=fingerprint magnet, LOL!

The keypad looks acceptable to me though. Easy to press buttons.

Here's the official video of the W980

Posted by: Phone Diva

W760 too. I wonder if the sound is really going to be as good as the videos imply. Obviously we won't get the booming sound like the videos, but what I mean is the videos imply powerful sound will be on these phones. What do you all think? If the sound really will be that good, I can ditch a couple of MP3 players and carry only one device.

I strongly doubt they will be as good as a dedicated dap anytime soon. The N91 and N81 come very, very close, and in many cases, outperform some of the most popular daps - - those are considered to be the best phone-mp3 player hybrids.

I think the samsung serene is the best, then the N91, and then the N81.

I truly hope the W980 performs well though. I would love to have a solid flip once again -

Posted by: newtype2011

I don't know if this video has been posted yet, but, I just wanted to pass it along to anyone who is interested in the W980:

http://blog.se-nse.net/2008/02/11/v...80-mini-review/

I personally didn't know that the front "lip" of the phone lit up like that while music is playing! Very cool -

I like the phone quite a bit. Not a big clamshell fan but I'd let that slide for the features this one contains.

Stereo speakers? AT LAST!!!! I remember when my misses got the MotoRokr and how great the sound was. You could actually hear the bassline on a good thumping classic house track. Then there was the SE speakers that were basically non-existant. Barely good enough for speaker phone use.

Adding the speaker factor to the built in radio antenna is fantastic. If it sounds good enough, I won't have to go through all the trouble of connecting my phone to the radio/stereo via my 3.5mm male/male extension cord.

I use this feature a lot because it's much more convenient that using RW's all the time as I did before my first mp3 phone.

looking forward to checking it out. However, as with most phones, there'll probably end up being some sort of feature that i'll hate or that was good in previous models and has been ommited from this one.

Can't please everyone!

I personally think this phone has a lot going for it, but I think SE will price it too high (relative to what else is out on the market). Also, it has that DISGUSTING fastport connector on the SIDE of the phone...so stupid. How is that supposed to fit in ones pocket!?

Oh, and even though you can beam the music to a radio and such, the quality will never be as good as connecting it directly with a cable. Still a cool feature though. I also think it is nifty how you don't have to have a headset connected to listen to the radio...finally!

Posted by: beilei

well guys, I am having a dilenma!
Anyone checkout the SH905i or F905i offered by Docomo?
They have a 3.2 mp as well and 10 x more colors than this phone but problems arise here and there since they're Japanese phones

Posted by: weiweiwei

i just got the w890i. made one phone call and the voice quality is crystal clear very good. the camera sucks @$$ for 3mp. my samsung d900 3mp has way better picture quality

...this is the W980 thread, not the W890 one. Honest mistake

Posted by: Pottertons

I for one am the type to who's sold on the basis of the music player rather than a camera. So i'm all over this phone once it is out.
