10 February 2008

Sony Ericsson’s new C702 Cyber-shot™ and C902 Cyber-shot™ deliver best-in class picture quality beyond just megapixels.

Barcelona, Spain – 10th February 2008 – Sony Ericsson today announced two high-performance additions to its popular Cyber-shotTM phone range with the launch of the C702 Cyber-shot™ and C902 Cyber-shot™. The two phones, packed with the latest camera technology, make it effortless to take perfect pictures of those spontaneous moments – day or night, at a bar or the beach – and instantly share them with friends and family.

“The two new Cyber-shot™ phones that we have announced today share certain characteristics. Both phones place ease-of-use and best-in-class picture quality at the heart of their designs,” said Sven Totté, Head of Imaging Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “Yet both appeal to different audiences. One is engineered to let you take more pictures in more places and the other is designed to look as stunning as the pictures it takes.”

Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-shotTM – Take pictures everywhere

Splash and dust resistant* – perfect for your active lifestyle
Single-handed camera use – for spur-of-the-moment photos
Built-in GPS with location-based imaging – sort and view your photos according to where you took them

Never too extreme

You can use the C702 Cyber-shot™ in a range of different conditions, as its unique design means its both splash and dust resistant*. This means that whether you’re off-road or just off to the mall, your C702 Cyber-shot™ phone can always be at your side wherever you go, whatever you do. After all, the best camera is the one you have with you.

Never miss a shot

The C702 Cyber-shot™ is engineered to let you take pictures in any position. The camera key and the active lens cover are specifically designed and placed so that you can stabilise the 3.2 megapixel camera and capture the moment with one hand - perfect for an active lifestyle. Combine this with steady-grip materials and a wrist-strap provided in-box, and the C702 Cyber-shot™ really is geared to go more places.

Never lost

The C702 Cyber-shot™ integrates GPS and a range of location-based imaging services that really add a new dimension to taking and managing your photos. When you take a picture, information about where you are in the world is automatically added to the image. So you can always share your best moments with your friends and family according to where the shots were taken. Or you can simply sort the picture through your photo gallery on the PC or on the web.

If you are lost on your travels, Google™ Maps for Mobile locates and guides you to where you want to go, enabling you to roam free with confidence. Use GPS to pinpoint your location and then get turn-by-turn voice guidance to your destination. Find your way home or to one of up to 20 million points of interest.

Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot TM – The image and style statement

* Slim Cyber-shot™ phone with unique slide-out lens cover. Camera-ready in an instant
* Stand out design – instantly recognisable
* 5.0 megapixel camera with Face Detection and Auto Focus. Always capture the best shot possible
* Illuminated camera touch keys. Intuitive guidance around the camera settings

The slim line C902 Cyber-shot™ will have everyone wanting to have their picture taken. Ultra-compact, stylish and with a unique lens cover that slides open to reveal the 5.0 megapixel Auto Focus camera, the C902Cyber-shot™ sports a camera performance beyond its sleek and slim looks. The phone’s lighting dramatically signals when you are in camera mode by switching from white to blue. The eight camera touch keys come to life and let you choose between camera modes, Photo Flash, Face Detection and Auto Focus, and more with just one touch without moving your finger from the shutter button.

Just shoot

With the C902 Cyber-shot™ you just need to slide open the active lens cover and shoot. The Face Detection and Auto Focus capability enables the camera to detect and focus on the face of your subject rather than the background, so that you can take sharp and high quality pictures of your friends.

Night shoot

With the C902 Cyber-shot™ you can be confident of getting the perfect shot. The phone incorporates the latest in lighting technology – Photo Flash – giving you better quality pictures even in low-light conditions. Also, a light solution has been added to the established BestPic™ feature – which lets you take nine photos in quick succession, choose the best and delete the rest. So now you can use BestPic™ wherever you are, perhaps even to capture the dance-floor action in a club!

Create your own multi-media slideshow

Use x-Pict story™ to add music and transitions to your gallery of photos and automatically create your own multi-media slideshow to share with your friends. Lights, music, action!

Store and share

The C902 Cyber-shot™ comes with a 160MB built-in memory – the equivalent of storage for up to 100 full resolution photos – plus the possibility to add even more memory with the Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) that can be bundled with the phone depending on the market.

Easy transfer wherever you are

You can transfer the images on your phone to your computer by using the CCR-70 M2 USB Adapter, also announced today. Save your photos to the phone’s memory card, remove it and pop it into the CCR-70. You then slot the card reader into your laptop and all your photos can be dragged across! Delete from your Memory Stick and you’re ready to go and fill it up again with more memories.

The C702 Cyber-shot™ is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in selected markets in Speed Black or Cyan Blue from Q2 2008.
The C702a Cyber-shot™and C702c Cyber-shot™are EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 phones that will be available in selected markets within the same timeframe.

The C902 Cyber-shot™ is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in selected markets in Swift Black or Luscious Red from Q2 2008.

Strange new numbering system for SE. Looks Japanese.

Posted by: fullfilth

is it waterproof?

Posted by: bonem

finally i've found a worthy replacement to my k790a!!!

Posted by: corrupt123

Why no GPS in the 902?

Posted by: SuxBeingU

WOW I hope they come to the US

Posted by: bodeh6

C902 looks hot. Too bad no US 3G. But it looks like it is the best replacement for my K790a. I don't use Data too often so GSM is good enough.

Posted by: UFO_Sasquatch

I REALLY like the C902 as well. Add this to the X1 and I'm heading back to SE.

Posted by: gotgame740

what's with the volume rocker all the way down by the camera button though?

Posted by: UFO_Sasquatch

Well it certainly will make using the zoom easier when taking pics.

Posted by: gotgame740

but it only has digital zoom, right? if it had optical, that would be smart. but nobody uses digital zoom. it'll probably be pretty awkward for playing music too

OMG...I guess my waiting for the K850 paid off...this is K850+a good keypad+waterproof+edge(for t-mobile's non 3g)+160mb on board mem.

Posted by: david07

Nice new phones!! Can't wait for these to come out.

C902 5MP is not waterproof, only the 3MP C702.

Posted by: cam'ron

C902 has a keypad like the K750, it appears. Ah, how I miss my old K750. This phone looks very promising, I was thinking about a K850 as a secondary phone (from Rogers) but I would hold out for this one instead. The K850 done right!

Posted by: sailwind

anyone know the video quality? QVGA @ 30fps like the 850?

Yes, plus the C902 has stereo microphone recording. So Audio should be better.

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

if T-Mobile provides C702 with AWS, my 1 year contract is yours!
take it along with X1 (generic HK version), I can simply forget nokia!

Posted by: wirelessgal

Wow, SE is releasing quite abit of phones this year. They may surpass Motorola if Motorola faces another bad year. Nevertheless, one of these Cyber-shot phones I will definitely get. And I'm waiting for the w760i.
Nice work SE!

Posted by: J_rahman07

any body know how much the c902 is going to cost and when its going to come out???

Posted by: bodeh6

330€-350€, maybe.

Posted by: bodeh6

First comparison of C902 vs N82. SE must be using the same sensor as the K850i cause the pics still suck big time compared to the N82. C902 = pass for me. Must wait till true successor of K850i and hope SE gets it right.

The N82 camera certainly looks better thus far. But after owning a N82 I could careless as it's about as cheap feeling as an etch-o-sketch. And as about well put together. The quality difference in pics is not enough (and of course it hasn't even been released yet) to discourage me from the C902. I've seen better pics from a pin hole camera than a Hasselblad. It boils down to the user and his/her ability. I take little from pics taken on auto mode. Especially when the C902 is using beta fw.

anyone got a guess on what the c702 will cost in US$? I want a new phone, but don't want to top $250

Probably close to $300-$350 when it comes out.

I figured so, thanks! This looks like an awesome phone, well worth the $300+ probably

Posted by: Hadoken

does anyone now what the c902's "photoflash" is? is that the same as the xenon flash that we all know from the k790/k850?

from the below picture, it looks like it's an LED assist only, like on the w810. BUT the c702 said it has a "photolight" which sounds definitely like an LED only, making it different from the c902.

I also read that the c902 has a videolight, which would have to be an LED... soo.. basically, would this phone have both xenon flash AND LED like the k850i?

Posted by: bodeh6

Photo Flash article

It is a type of LED light that is supposed to be more efficient and better then Xenon Flash. It is better because it can be operated in two ways.
1. Continuous Mode for lighting during a video or use as a flash light
2. Burst Mode where it will burst just like a Xenon Flash for taking photos.

The SE SO905iCS from Japan uses this too.

Posted by: Hadoken

Thanks for the information. I did not know that!

Would it be correct to say that the new LED will create superior pictures than with a Xenon flash? ... at least for phones?

So pretty much the main differences are C902 with 5 MP camera, and the C702 with 3.2 MP camera and GPS?

I went K790a -> Nokia E90 -> iPhone. But out of those 3, I really loved the K790a the most and really want to come back to Sony Ericsson.

I'm thinking about picking up one of these "C"s for the May-September (plus it will be nice for when I got to Australia in the summer). Just a tough call.... Buy a C702 + separate digital camera, or the C902 + separate GPS

(Then of course I'll pick up XPERIA or the rumored iPhone2 after that!)

I believe the C902 has an extra "photoflash" bulletpoint on it. I myself am trying to find out how significant that really is though, and if it can live up to a Xenon.

Agree 100%. In regards to GPS I've had two phones now with built in GPS (n82 and Bj2) and I found myself using google maps nearly every time instead. By the time you lock on to a GPS signal with the phone and then type in your directions you could have done so with google maps ten times quicker. I think as much as I was leaning towards the C902 I'm now feeling more love for the C702, less mega pixels and all. The difference in picture quality between the two is almost negligible.

How about one of the G series phones? They've got both GPS and the Camera. don't know how good the cameras are though compared to the C series. There's a G900 and G700 preview over at GSM Arena that shows some demo pics for the G series. Take a look at them. They seem quite decent. I think the G series also allow you to pick where you want to focus just by touching the location on the screen. I'm eager to know how well that works.

Posted by: TAKN

I am satisfied with Google Maps on my iPhone - so I would be happy to take that in place of a full blown GPS. I usually know the intersection I'm lost at, and where I want to go.

I actually found the GPS on my E90 to be a bit annoying with having to lock on, loading on maps, etc.

The C902 is also quite a bit thinner than the C702. So it just might be the best bet.

No North American bands on the G series

So excited...finally SE have announced some good phones (both in terms of functionality and style). Still have ages yet for my contract to be up for renewal but for the right phone I might be tempted to just buy...

Had the k850i which i didn't get on with so back to my trusty w810i. The dimensions aren't that different between the w810i and the c702 so I think it'll be a good replacement, not to mention the slightly better camera...judging from the pics and the 3D view on gsmarena looks like they've stuck with the d-pad (woohoo no joystick!) .

What would you do in my situation?
I picked up a K790 a week ago to replace my W810. so far, I've have a total of like... 28 minutes on it.
The C702 is released on May 26 (Europe, USA, worldwide?) for anywhere from 300-400$ (probably add a markup at first from distributors cuz it's a new phone).

Would you return or sell the K790 and wait for the C702?
Or would you stick with the k790 for a little while and wait until the C702 drops to 250-300?

Well...I doubt you'll notice much difference in pic quality even though the C702 has a smaller focal length. I've had a K790a and I'm looking to get a C702 as well. I'd say sell the K790a and get the C702. But that's me.

Wirelessly posted (HP 211 and/or nokia N73: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.7))

I am interested to get C702
however, I may end up to bite the bullet to get X1 in order to get NA1700 3G support
if C702 has NA1700 3G, I'd buy 6 of them!

Yeah 3G would be nice (I'm pretty sure the C702 does not support NA 3G). Though after using a Bj2 for several days I'm not sure 3g is so important for me.

Hold onto the K790. I picked up a K790a when it was first released - but it was a LONG wait between the announcement, release, and then until I was actually able to get my hands on one. There are always so many delays.

I would wait. By the time it drops to that price, most of the problems and bugs would be sorted out.l
