Cruise/3G not so fast. Settings?

I'm not thrilled with the web speed increase since going to the Cruise and AT&T's 3G network. Yes, faster than before, but I think I'm missing something.
I had a Qtek 8500 (flashed with i-mate ROM) and the AT&T SmartPhone plan. I haven't changed plans, and wonder if this is slowing things down?
Help, ideas?

Several things affect speed, how many people are using it at one time (3g or Edge), the actual ROM, signal strength etc Changing DATA plans will NOT affect the speed on ATT

Not so much plans per se, I was thinking about some discussion I saw re gateways, etc. isp.cingular vs. wap.cingular, maybe other settings to tweak. I'm not finding that exact discussion in Search.
