I am back home in the Palm OS fold

OK OK I admit. I was tempted. I got drawn in by the bright lights and shiny features, the WIFI this and that and I went and got me a HTCP4000. I was the centre of attention whenever I showed it off to my friends and family -- everyone thought it was the coolest thing since slice bread except me. The minute I start to use it I start to run into frustration. Too many taps to get I want to go. Takes forever for apps to open. I am always watching my memory and have to soft reset on a daily basis to "recover" my memory. Everytime I want to write something I have to pull out the darn keyboard. Cant do one handed stuff I was used to with the Palm. Well last night I had enough and pull the plug. I switched back to my Treo 700P (good thing I kept it around). What a difference the experience is. There are lots of people out there that bad-mouth the Palm OS saing its old etc etc...but it still rules. It so much nicer to use my palm OS phone that it is to use the kludge that is a Windows Mobile phone. It may not have the WIFI (which sucks battery like no tomorrow) but it does exactly what I want to do and when I want to do it. Looking forward to see what Palm comes up with next year with Palm OS II. Dont think I will ever touch another Windows device again.

You know I just recently got a Centro so I'm new to Palm OS. But even I could instantly tell that it's better than the monstrosity known as Windows Mobile.

Love my treo 700p. You couldn't talk me out of it!

yup I just went from a mogul to a centro and BY FAR the centro is wayy better. Doesnt slow up or freeze at all. I do not regret my decision at all

Isn't it amazing, the difference between WM to POS? It's like going from hell to heaven. I've been using my iPaq iduring my time between Treos & I'm hurtin here. I can't stand it anymore. I don't ever remember having to reboot my Treo 8 times a day...

Posted by: smartphoner

WHio would have known that the old Palm OS that many criticize is still better than the "new" WIndows Mobile. I mean its liek night and day. My HTC use to literally stress me out --- my Treo 755P is a pleasure to use.

100% agreed. My mogul was nothing but problems at the end. My centro...im in love

I infact so called downgraded my self from WM5 (XV 6700) to Palm treo 700P. And honestly, I am happier than ever before.

I could imagine how matured PALM OS is compared to WM2003 when introduced. Even today compared to WM6 its far more stable, faster and thought fully designed.

Only drawback is its not as funky as WM5/6. In pal no reset, very small memory foot print, far more faster than WM and superb syncing capabilities. WM5/6 is no where nearer to palm in terms of syncing.

Posted by: Ultimo119

I do agree with that. When I tried to sync my contacts back on my mogul it would always freeze up and I was told that our server did not support contact through push.

However now with my centro I can get my contacts without error.

Palm FTW

I do hear you. I've had my Treo 650, my 1st ever smartphone, barely 6 weeks, but I love that thing to death. I find the Palm OS so logical. It may help that I once had a Palm Pilot Zire 21 about 2-3 years ago (from about 2005-2006) and so was used to it, but regardless I find it so intuitive.

I will admit the HTC 8525 is very tempting, it is a highly-rated phone and I could get one. It is especially tempting after hearing about Opera Mobile 9.25 and how good it is, since apparently there is no Palm version. I do browse the web quite a bit.

That said, overall, the things I do on my Palm, I love it. Its interface to me is so logical and intuitive, it just makes sense how it works. One of the main things with me: it might be a fancy phone, yet to put it in/out of vibrate mode (something I have to do daily) you merely flick a switch. Even my "black & white" Nokia phones weren't that simple with that task.

The Palm OS may not be "flashy" but it is slick, and really efficient--yet you can do "cool" stuff with the Palm, like play Frogger or PacMan, check/compose email (without logging in to the website), read Yahoo!'s NBA/NCAAB site, or (haha) post at HowardForums. Unlike the iPhone you can copy-paste with it, I can type postings like this in Memos and then select/copy it, then paste it in the box so I don't lose anything if the connection times out. Try that with your iPhone. (For the record, I'm doing this at home, though.)

It took me no time to get used to it, I fly all over the place with impunity and have almost from the first day, even though it was my first-time with any Palm device in nearly 2 years. I really love its "chat-style" instant messaging, the way when I call someone (or they call me) immediately after it prompts me if I wish to save it as a contact. Opera Mini works good overall, although for awhile it was buggy, but since then it works good and isn't bad at all for web browsing. And heck, the thing uses plain old SD cards for memory expansion.

I really do find the Palm OS to be really slick and efficient, without being "bland," very easy to learn and totally intuitive. It is so full of thoughtful touches, is so intuitive and "just makes sense" with how it works.

It is amazing to me that even my "long in the tooth" Treo 650 (wasn't it introduced in 2004 or something?) is still very competent, the current 680-Centro being very much like it. People everyday who think their Motorola Razr (perhaps the most overly popular phone of all time) is so slick pick up my Palm Treo and find their overrated Razr immediately belittled by my "relic of 2004." HaHa.

Go Palm!

Iphone is like Pornstar, performance on screen makes you feel that this only can satisfy you. But when you have it you realize that she is no better than your wife, infact she is not as good.

WM5 phones are like hollywood sexy star, who reveals less than pornstar so you get very attracted. But when you have it, you realize that she is so frigid that its like having a plastic doll.

Palm is like you unassuming wife, who despite being great performer, not appreciated because does not have sexy figure like porn star and dont hide every thing like hollywood actress.

I love the Palm OS operating system.
I had a 700p until the update turned it into a brick and Sprint was nice enough to give me a 755p for free!
For the life of me I don't know why everyone is infatuated with WiFi.
Unless you hang out at Starbucks or some bookstore what does it matter?
I pay $15 a month for an unlimited EVDO high speed connection so why does everyone want or care if the phone can get WiFi?
When you are in the woods and only have WiFi capabilities all you have is a fancy phone that can't do anything.
I can be anywhere with my 755p and surf the net for scores, messages, news, anything.
Are these folks that want WiFi too frugal to pay the $15?
I know Verizon offers the same EVDO signal for $45 (they seem to put more value on what they sell) and that is why they lost my 14 years of loyalty.
I agree with everyone else regarding Windows based operating systems.
I had a Smart phone and it seemed like I had to do 2 or 3 things to do what I wanted to do.
The Internet was always on and the battery life was terrible.
With Palm one touch turns everything off or on.
I will never use anything other than Palm unless the operating system is as easy.
(never say never).
Just count me in as a lover of Palm and their OS.
The ability to add third party apps just makes it better!

meatman I have a question.

I am looking at a palm with the sprint everything plan. I think they offer both os2 and windows. Is that what you all are talking about in the thread? And if so, can you sync up a laptop to the os2 for windows? I am pretty stupid with this stuff........and do you use bluetooth to sync up to a laptop?

Posted by: smartphoner

Senoiaslim there is no OS2. Not yet anyway. It runs Palm OS 5.2.3. You will have everything you need in the box to sync with your laptop. You can do Bluetooth too but you have to do some fiddling to get it done.

Posted by: meatman42@insig

Senoiaslim
smartphone is correct. YES we are talking about the Palm OS being far superior to Windows. Get the Palm 755p. You don't have a choice unless you buy the 700 currently offered in both p and wx by Sprint. The 755p is better so just get it. When it comes to accessories for your new phone go to Ebay for the car battery charger and the extra ac wire and usb wires to sync to your computer using Hotsync. It all runs so smooth. They will sell you a kit that has all I just mentioned for around $10. Don't buy anything from Sprint other than the phone. Nice leather carrying cases can be purchased from different Palm stores across the net. Do not buy one off Ebay because many of them do not work and look cheap. I paid $30 for my leather case but it is classy looking and hooks to my belt sideways, with a built in magnet that keeps the cover closed. Here's what it looks like:
http://www.provantage.com/palm-3259ww~7PLMA055.htm
This is less than I paid for mine and comes with a car charger. This might be all you really need. If you are going to use a memory card pay attention to which one you need. There is a little confusion with the type card Treo's use. 4GB would be nice, I bought a 2GB at Christmas for almost nothing and have been happy. Also note when you put music on the phone it comes out in mono because the headphone jack is mono. If you hook it to an amplified speaker perhaps there is a converter plug that can make it play on both speakers. Logitech makes a speaker that folds up that seemed to do a nice job. I had to buy an adapter to get it to work. My Treo Store sells the adapters for $4.00. Radio Shack gets $10. It all depends on how quick you want it.

Thanks Meatman. The other question I have is that if i sync my laptop up to the phone, will I be able to use the modem in the phone to get the web on my laptop. If so, is that what hotsync is for? Or is there something else that I need in the form of a download or hook ups?

thanks

Hotsync is a program you install on your computer to back up everything on your Treo. It also will go in to your Outlook email and install all your contacts on your phone. If you have events in the calendar section it will install them on your phone. Basically Hotsync does 3 things. 1) It backs up your Treo so if you ever have to do a hard reset you don't lose anything on your phone. 2) Hotsync allows you to take a brand new Treo and install all your contacts on to your phone. 3) Hotsync will allow you to install 3rd party apps onto your phone or card in your phone. You might pay for some of these 3rd party apps so being able to reinstall is easier than having to get ahold of whoever sold you the apps and explain why you need to download it again. You can use Hotsync to put mp3's or movies or anything on your phone/card. Hotsync is the proper way to install everything on your phone. It has nothing to do with using your phone as a modem. I have never used my phone as a modem for my laptop. I just pay Sprint $15 a month and use my phone to hit the net. I have heard of people doing what you are asking I just have never made the effort to try it. Hope this helps. I am not the most knowledgeable person regarding Treo's but I do love my Treo. Just get one and play with it. It's hard to screw it up. I would recommend you use Hotsync once a week or daily if you use notes or calendar. If you do this you will never lose anything if your phone dies or you have to do a hard reset. BTW/ the most valuable program I have installed on my Treo is a program called Handmark Pocket Express. This gives me news, weather, sports, stock prices, telephone numbers with criss cross and search by address features. I think I pay around $70 a year for this program but it's well worth the cost. Phone numbers and address are important in my business. I have been able to pull up numbers where the person asked how I got their number because it was unlisted. This directory also gives me the name of the spouse and sometimes even the kids. It is a nation-wide directory. It will pay for itself in time saved. If I am driving around and need to know if the Circuit City has something the one I'm in doesn't have I can look up their number and call them with one hand and map directions to the store. The program is great for sports with up to the minute scores in all college or pro games. I work in retail and everyone asks me what the score is or who won. Pocket Express is the best 3rd party app I have ever bought. I have used it for 2 years.

I'm of mixed decision on this.
On one hand, with Vista and WM it's as simple as plug and sync. Literally for me, that was it. It automatically synced my WM03 device contact/cal ...
With Palm and Vista, you have to have special software, and they want you to install Palm Desktop (WHY? I prefer outlook!) ... and if you "insist" on using outlook, you have to install another app (Outlook Sync Conduits)

Don't get me wrong, I love OS Garnet (5.4.8) on my Treo 650. It's awesome. BUT It's quite... too quite at times. I had to buy Ringo to use MP3 ringtones, and VolumeCare to increase the ring volume to somthing audible.

Again, I love OS Garnet and WM2003, Wm5 and 6... equally.

Thanks you guys for the help. I think I am going to get the 755. I guess i will have to buy the modem service plan for 25/ month from sprint and than use the link you gave me to hook it up to my laptop. unless there is another way?

Posted by: meatman42@insig

Slag2
Now I get what everyone is asking.
They want to use their Palm as a modem for their notebook.
Duh.
Thanks for the links you provided as it helped me understand exactly how to make that happen.
I would be willing to pay the $34 to smoothly make it happen.
I already turned a Palm into a brick regarding the update last year.
I can now see why people would want to use their laptop to hit the Internet via their Palm. I don't know why it took me 2 years to figure this out.
Just call me slow.

Posted by: Slag02

I fell into this trap as well-
I wanted the mogul- with its wifi and built in GPS.. boy was I wrong.
Someone was nice enough to trade me a brand new 700p for my used Mogul
Best deal I ever made!

Palm OS FTW

I have been using Palm OS PDAs since 1996, and have had a Pilot 1000, PalmPilot Personal, Handspring Visor Deluxe, Palm m105, Palm m125, Palm Tungsten E, and finally a Tapwave Zodiac 1. (I borrowed a Treo 600 for a couple of months somewhere in there too.)

About a month ago, I bought an unlocked GSM Centro. Now my Motorola phones are relegated to "backup" status, and even my Zodiac spends more time on the shelf than on my belt. I'm impressed with how much the Palm OS does now while managing to stay as simple and intuitive as it was in the beginning.

I just ESN swapped back to my Centro. I just couldn't deal with the Touch locking/lacking/needing resets, etc, any more. It feels good to be home.
