V9 marked "EOL (End Of Life)"

Anyone else hoping for an upgrade to this phone's COLOR and external screen features sometime soon if we started to carry a newer version of it?

Posted by: anubis9278

just hoping we stop selling it really.

Posted by: DukeL

Yes! I want a jet black v9 with gps and external touchscreen features activated! Why did at&t have to disable all the good features, and why did Moto have to choose the mahogany color? I lived with it as long as I could but after seeing some of the overseas v9's the at&t version just looks pathetic. Where is the refresh?

Is it that bad anubis? Have you guys gotten any reports of V9's freezing and dying because of text message limits?

While not perfect, I prefer the unlocked Rogers version.

Posted by: cozz36

Will the EOL equal a DIP (drop in price)? I'd love to have one but they're a little too high for me.

Posted by: walkguru

Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: Nokia6555b/2.0 (03.31) Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0)

Man that was fast.

I hope this means the entire Motorola line-up is being redone. The Original Razr, after nearly 4 years of being in service, is being discontinued and positioned as a go-phone soon. Perhaps the V3xx will take over the lower-end, the Z9 slider coming out in mid-march being mid-tier, and a refreshed V9 (V10?) with GPS and more at a more affordable price being upper end. The Q9 doesn't sell that well, even though it is a great piece of hardware.

Anyone else have any predictions on what is going on with the Motorola line-up? As an AT&T employee (with no inside knowledge) and Motorola stock-holder I'm quite interested.

Posted by: thraven233

I remember from an older thread that a new v9 is coming with gps.. Hopefully a new color.

Posted by: jpmkam

EOL on the V9 is good news assuming ATT quickly follows with a refreshed V9 in a new color choice.

Posted by: bobolito

Is the V9 that bad that AT&T is discontinuing it so quickly?

I don't think it's bad at all. Mine have worked flawlessly.

It's not that it's a bad phone. The phone itself is a GREAT device...

It's flawed in the way that...

THE COLOR OMG SUCKS THE COLOR OMG SUCKS THE COLOR OMG SUCKS THE COLOR OMG SUCKS THE COLOR OMG SUCKS THE COLOR OMG SUCKS THE COLOR OMG SUCKS

wait did that slip out?

oh yeah, the pink backlighting and COLOR SUCKS! It appeals to about .0002% of the male market. And honestly, not that many girls want that specific phone. Therefore, it's a giant flop and ONLY because of aesthetics.

That's my opinion anyway.

Posted by: bostonirishguy

That's why I prefer my gray (Rogers) one.

Does Rogers run off the same frequencies as AT&T and if so, where can I get an unlocked Rogers V9? I'd LOVE to have a V9.

The Rogers V9 has the exact same frequencies as the at&t one. Check the BST for a ton of them being sold and see if the seller will unlock it for you.

...and if you're feeling especially dangerous check eBay.

K

PS: The new V9 should be a new color with aGPS/GPS and the external control of the stock V9.

the refresh for this phone has been pushed to TBD/EOL. so we may not even see a new one for a while. the eol is due to "nobody can sell this damn phone for $319 without a rebate, or for $319 with a rebate." or maybe cost of this equipment. moto z9 husky 3/11/08 will more than likely take center stage

Exactly. I was interested until I saw the price. Not enough phone for the $$$ IMO.

If it's replacement has GPS and a more reasonable price then I may consider it.

Posted by: thraven233

that's why I haven't boughten one yet, that absurd price! Typical moto, $500 v3, $250 v3i..

Posted by: skytrack

$319? The V9 is only $78 at wal-mart - even as an upgrade... Confirmed here in LA.

Posted by: DurtyD

^ Unfortunately my local WalMart does not have this deal - if the price at the AT&T store was closer to $78 than $300, it would be more attractive. Well, at least price-wise.....whoever approved that color needs some help though.

I must live in a cave. I've never been to a Wal-Mart, but I might have to check it out now.

Your not missing much, but cheap led based chineese knockoffs. I bet the v9's are bought from a lesser quality batch or manufacturing plant.

Right, because everything you see on the news must be true.

Posted by: skytrack

Yeah, anyway, call the Wal-Marts near you. They have the V9 for AT&T and V8 for T-Mo for $78 on a new 2-year or renewal. Best deal anywhere. 30-day return policy and no additional contract penalty.

Posted by: smg1976

The only other new feature in the "replacement" V9 is Video Share, to my knowledge.

That, and GPS.

And like everyone here, hopefully a different color.

Posted by: jpmkam

I'd be happy just to have it in another color even if they didn't add GPS.

No. Just pointing out I'm suprised you guys didn't know this. Also the news has no motive whatsoever to falsify information against walmart. The tendency is usualy quite the opposite.(to keep things under wraps.)

Posted by: thraven233

The lead thing is definitely true, but its also true that they have amazing
prices on phones. Almost picked up a v9 til I remembered the new one coming

Where did you hear that. What about the external screen functions?

Posted by: ItalianAngel831

so we are gettign a replacement v9? i don't understand this. and has at&t released any phones since the new year? i feel like we are already behind and the att lineup getting stale.

I have the phone and love it. I don't really mind the color.... the performance out weighs the color.

Nothing outweighs pink backlighting lol

I thought it was pink as well. Naaaaasty.

No it's purple but it's not that bad overall the phone looks classy it's just not the ideal color, and after seeing how much better the external touchscreen features were on some of the european & asian models(also come in grey/blue & black) it is perplexing why at&t would disable these features.

You've pretty much hit it on the head. I got the phone for $99 from Amazon, and actually like the color, so it wasn't a bad deal. But the feature crippling is just kind of mind-boggling. They put in a huge, gorgeous outside screen with touch controls and haptic feedback, but then only allow you to use it for the music player? Weak. I'm also severely disappointed with how locked-down the phone is in general. The only way you can do something as basic as using Opera Mini is to do some serious hacking on your phone. What's the point in having a nice screen and HSDPA connectivity if you have to use a lame browser? I've only had the phone for about a month and already it's starting to collect dust.

The browser is actually awesome just as good as opera mini. It is opera mobile. You just have to know how to set it up. Go in to settings and turn "fit to page" off them exit and reopen. Now you can view web pages in true html format and quickly zoom in or out by pressing the numeric #1 &#9 keys I beleive. Took me awile to figure this out.

Oh I know about that. It still comes up short. There are a lot of links that I can click in Opera Mini that I can't in Opera Mobile (e.g., individual pictures in a gallery on certain sites). On top of that, the zooming is horrible. In fact, it's not even real zooming, as the image stays the same size, and so all you get is pixelated junk.

I don't know, never had that problem. Must just be with certain sites.

Can someone please post a good pic, or a link to one, of the V9 with the keypad on, I have yet to see one a live one except on the live bar, and it's too bright in the store for the backlight to come on.

Thanks. Maybe I have seen the keypad light up. I was under the impression that the letters/numbers and dividers all the same color like the older models.

Although the V9 just didn't turn out to be the phone for me...I still think it was one of the best pure mobile phones I have ever used. I guess I'm one of the few that really liked the Mohogany color...and aside from the sticky key quirks, and the inability to access Gmail w/o that hateful little Java nag...it was pretty cool.

Black color, and lower price point...it still might be a player.

Yep. Although I actually like the color it is now after seeing it in person, it just kind of annoys me (the phone). Like when it's closed and you push one of the side buttons it like vibrates and sounds like a spring just went off or something.. its weird. Also the inner screen looks so small for the phones size.

My wife's Ruby V3xx is from Wal-Mart -- it was $30.00 or so at the time of her contract renewal (a little over 14 months ago). It's been working fine, even with a monthly usage of 600 minutes (we don't have a landline).

No one said all of them are bad, just some of them.

Posted by: Michael95GT

Wal-Marts phones are the EXACT same phone you would buy at a Corp. store. Same warranty through AT&T, etc.

Posted by: modred

We got two V3xx's from Walmart a year ago, and both have been great. I hope to get a V9 soon and will certainly purchase it from Walmart. Some people refuse to do business with Walmart, and that's certainly their prerogative, but for the rest of us it's a good place to buy a reasonably-priced phone.

Having said all that...I have a Hong Kong variant V9 coming soon. I missed the phone to tell you the truth. All phones have shortcomings...even my beloved BlackBerry. The V9 will be a fun weekend alternative to my weekly work-phone activities.

The HK V9 comes in Black too...so it ought to be hot! I can't wait!!

The HK V9 runs 3G at 2100, not 850/1900.

No concern. My neck of the woods is non-3G and will probably be that way for eternity. I didn't care one way or the other about the 850/1900 3G on my AT&T V9 either, for the same reason. I bought it because I liked it...

I ordered one too. I'll just have to live without the 3G seeing as AT&T seems like they will never release a different color. The sacrafice of 3G is just something I'll have to live with. I am much more interested in finally being able to use the external touchscreen for viewing videos, calendar, photo library, music navigation, reading text messages, returning calls etc. It's just a shame how badly at&t disabled their version of the v9, they even crippled the java.

Side note. I know you own a graphite rogers v9, have you been able to get mms working on at&t? Several people that bought the phone with the intention of using the rogers v9 on at&t were not able to to set it up.

I too would like to purchase the update to this phone or the v8. It is truly ashame AT&T chose to waste real estate the way they did.

Don't complain. VZW's waste of real estate even more ridiculous. There are two buttons on the outside of the phone that have the same function (one touch, one hard). Now that is wasteful and downright stupid.

I'm really sorry to see the AT&T V9 go...and hopefully the successor will be a more palatable color for the masses, and have some more "bells & whistles". I have recently started using a HK-variant Black V9 and am very impressed so far, much moreso than I was with the branded model. Is it because of the black color vs. the mahogony? I don't know...but I enjoy it a lot more. Enough, in fact, that I sold my BlackBerry and am back to a "dumbphone" for at least a little while...

Posted by: IronCross

To me, a really fancy semi-smart-but-very-cool dumbphone that is superior with its call-making ability is more valuable than scheduling my day.

Posted by: macizcool

Maybe the reason Motorola is hurting so bad right now is the fact that they are overcharging for their phones. The RAZR is such an outdated style, and yet Wal-Mart is charging $50. for the v3xx and AT&T is charging like $79.99.

I couldn't agree more. Well said...

The V9 hits the mark.

Posted by: ChocoDough

I actually really like the mahogany color. I always thought it was unigue and different.

It's a great phone, but mine hasn't seen much attention since I got my iPhone.

Posted by: Alfred_Neuman

all you can do is blame at&t for their stupidity in picking the color. at this rate im going to be stuck witht he original v3 for another year before i can replace it. (4 yrs and counting)

Posted by: jpmkam

Don't understand why AT&T couldn't have released the V9 in 2 or 3 color choices when it was launched.

Posted by: Michael95GT

Well I wander if these price increases are being blamed on the price of oil too?!?!??! These prices are pathetic, and that with a 2 year contract!!!!

While we're at it, or, while Moto is at it, they might want to change that aweful chrome hinge on the V9. It's awkward at best. I think a black color hinge would fit much better.

Post it then. How come no at&t stores can confirm this and they are still for sale everywhere? Just finishing off remaining stock? I don't think so.

Posted by: cmatthews

I asked a couple of friends that work for AT&T and neither of them know anything about it EOL for it.

I hope it's not EOL. I'm just kind of shocked that Moto hasn't released another color by now. It's been out over a year now. With the original RAZR it's available in every color imaginable it seems.

Maybe it's EOL only in the PNW...? Unlikely but who knows.

We still sell it but we don't promote it. Kinda like the N75 which is also marked as EOL.

They will never stop making new colors for the original RAZR. Soon they'll have to start inventing colors, but new colors will never stop coming. Ever!! EVER!!!

If only Moto would put the same enthusiasm into new colors for the RAZR2, it would sell MUCH better. I can pretty much guarantee that.

Understood... I just took it the wrong way initially.

Yeah for whatever reason the phones that are EOL still seem to be sold until the factory runs out or something... the N75 has been EOL for as long as I know and I've been with the company 6 months now.

It was rumored that there was supposed to be some kinda refresh for the V9 but I don't know if it ever really came to fruition.

YES.
OMG.
THAT WAS MY PROBLEM I JUST REALIZED.
Sorry for the freak out.
But I just remembered when my V9 reached near 600 messages (inbox+outbox+everything else), it kept freezing and crap.

It was SO annoying and I had no idea what was wrong.

I was wondering when someone else would run into that issue. My first V9 was sent back to at&t under warranty after 31 days because it froze and died when I had 580+ text messages. The second did the same thing around the same number and I realized then it was an inherent defect...it's also why I sold the thing.

I hope the V10 doesn't have this bug and that at&t is more than aware of it's affect on their current V9s.

I hope the V10 doesn't have this bug and that at&t is more than aware of it's affect on their current V9s.

I didn't want to send my V9 back into warranty because I had just gotten it.
I clean up around 540 messages every now and then when I see my inbox and outboxes getting up to the lower 200s, about every morning.

If the problem gets bad, I'll probably send it in and get something else then.
And sorry I responded from your first post on this thread; I didn't realize this thread has six! pages.

I have setup mine to auto-cleanup at 99 msgs which is the most it accepts. That's more than enough for me.

I'm sorry but...you sent back a phone because it had trouble holding 600 messages? Why on Earth would you need to hold that many messages? I clean my messages out when they get into the 30's. I don't need people picking up my phone and reading my stuff. How ridiculously anal do you have to be to keep hundreds and hundreds of messages lying around in your inbox? It's not like you're going to keep reading them over and over

I just find that very anal retentive.

I find that a little rude to be calling someone else anal because they like to keep more text messages than you.

Personally, I'd like to hold as many as I can.
I go through about 500-600 text messages a day, and today I even reached around 900.

I had to clean out my inbox twice, and frankly it gets kinda annoying sometimes.

Perhaps you don't text much so you don't clean it out as much or you like to keep your inbox spick-and-span.

But to say someone else is anal retentive is quite rude just because they do things differently.

And the phone should tell you that is memory isn't enough and you need to delete messages. Instead, it becomes buggy and restarts itself and becomes a pretty, buggy piece of metal and glass.

That's what's worrying, because it can't handle it. On the V3xx, it just wouldn't allow you to send or receive any until you cleaned out your inbox.
That's why we're having this issue.

You need to use the auto cleanup option in the messaging setup menu.

I didn't send it back because it had trouble holding 600 messages. I sent it back because it froze and stopped working around that point. What point is having a phone that when you power it up it freezes, when you try to make a call it freezes, and when you so much as look at it...it freezes? There isn't any hence it was sent back for not working, not because it couldn't hold a set amount of messages.

People also don't have easy access to my phone; it's usually in my pocket and I rarely let just anyone hold/use it so having that many messages doesn't bother me. And I do re-read them occasionally - especially the really funny ones my insane friends send me.

But thank you for pointing out my failing as a human being.

I do.
I set it to auto-cleanup every day, but I end up cleaning it out twice a day anyways.
Other than that, it can cleanup after you have 99 messages.

Buttt......
I don't really like the idea of only being able to hold 99 messages.

That's what happened to me.
I would take out the battery and put it back, and power it back on.
It seemed fine for the first 10 seconds and then I closed the flip.
The outside flip then showed an upside down at&t logo.
Which happened every single time.
Frozen.
It was so annoying.

Lock the messages that you don't want to delete. Then auto delete won't touch them.
