Rokr E1-Big problems-don't understand solution

I have a Motorola Rokr E1. Recently the phone stopped playing sound during phone calls, video and mp3 play (but it will test out the ringtones with full sound). I have tried resyncing it, resetting it but to no avail. I don't know what is going on. I have been reading up and think that if I update the firmware the problem might be solved but I don't really understand how to do it and all the links are too old to connect to the pages. Can someone please help me. Also how do I back up my phone. I have transferred all my personal files to a folder on my hard drive, is this what they mean? Thanks for any help and if not at least for reading.
