(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ive been reading alot about wep cracking and how it works etc, and as a tech support guy and computer geek ive wondered how its done forever just never read about it.. gives more meaning to security and what should really be done.. has anyone figured out a wep cracker for the iphone? ive had fun playing at home with one on my pc for my own network of course, and wondered if the iphone had such power, id hate to have someone bustin my wep while just using an iphone... is it possible? if so what app/source is it that could do it?

(and yes i understand the legalitys of wep etc, this is why i want to play on MY network)

Holy Illegal Quesition, and as of now there is no app that can do such a thing. But i feel like the iphone def has the power to do so.

If you already understand it is possible, because you've done it with your PC/Mac on your home network ... what's the point of doing it on the iPhone as well? To prove it works, a second time? The iPhone is an OS X Mac, so you know it's possible. I think you're fishing around for specific binaries...

Just like you say, "id hate to have someone bustin my wep" -- guess what ... others don't want you busting theirs with your iPhone so that you can mooch free WiFi. Remember the golden rule, man ...

Who uses WEP anymore??? If you use WEP at home, and you're a "tech support guy", you should be ashamed.

hahaha...I love this. Let me enlighten you guys abut about WEP.

First off WEP is a VERY good way to secure your network, now before you get your panties all in a bunch let me explain. The most "common" tools out there that say they will "crack" WEP do it by either throwing packets at a AP and capturing the packets sent by the AP and then using those packets to "crack" your WEP Key. Others just listen (Older way and slower) and do the same thing. Well other then the weak IV's in WEP it’s a very good method to secure your network. You just need to know how do deploy it in your own network. One way and I can tell you a lot of companies that currently are stuck on WEP due to the cost of upgrading there systems over to a WPA or WPA2 solution us this. Its putting your AP on lets say Key Index 3 and then all your devices on Key Index 1 Since the same WEP Key was used to create the Key Indexes both the unit will be able to talk. Now why is this secure? Well if you use a tool to capture packets and then try to "crack" the key will it's only getting half of the info. You would have to just capture the info. from just the AP or just from the Device and by the time you do that. A lot of companies and I do this at home also. rotate key indexes on a regular bases and that mean that by the time someone get it cracked you have changed to another Key Index. This is the simplest way I can explain it with out start going over most people's heads.

Yes, we ALL know about WEP, yet I don't know a single IT admin that uses it.

LOL, me either...due to everything I own now will support WPA2 or 802.11i standards. Much easier then keep going back into your AP and change Keys. LOL I just wanted to make sure people understand that if you don't have any options you can still use WEP just need to know how to.

I use a wireless bridge that doesnt support anything but WEP.. Ive never seen a bridge that supported WPA.. if there was one, I'd probably upgrade.

I just locked my network down via MAC addresses.. might not be as secure but works okay for me.

Cloning MAC addresses is VERY simple to do. Just to a Google search and your find apps to help you do this.

As for a bridge look at the Symbol CB3000 might cost more then you want to pay but if I remember correctly it supports WPA and WPA2

Silly question, but can the iPhone use 802.11n?

Posted by: cam'ron

I am sure tons of joe 6 pack users are still either not locked or on WEP and generally use easy to crack passwords. I was at a friends place, scanned for networks, found one guess the WEP pass as 12345 and it worked. You have to realize most people are computer illiterate or at least not very savvy.

listen up boys & girls..

to crack WEP..

you only need to google " BACKTRACK 2.0 " from remote-exploit ...

and read ..

takes about 15 minutes from setup.. to " KEY FOUND " is about 15 minutes..

read.. follow directions.. and crack away .

cheers!
