US T-Mobile phone - German T-Mobile prepaid SIM

I have a US T-Mobile phone that hasn't been active in a couple years. I'll be traveling to Germany, and would like to know if it's possible to use that phone (which is NOT unlocked, and won't be since T-Mobile would only give me the code if I had current service on it) with a German T-Mobile prepaid SIM. Sure would be nice not to have to buy a whole new phone (even though it seems they're pretty cheap w/ a new prepaid account in Germany - it's more of an environmental thing for me than a cost issue).

Anyone have direct experience with this? Any way I can find out? For example, how do I find out which network codes my phone (a Samsung SGH-R225) is locked to?

Thanks in advance for your help!

1. Is your existing phone quad band?
2. If not, got to T-Mobile.com and buy the Motorola V195 for $39.99 which is quad-band and comes with 10 minutes of airtime. Call 1-877-387-4324 asak what is policy on unlocking phone because of going to Europe on short notice (less than the 90 day window) When I called few minutes ago I was told to take the phone to a t-Mobile store and they would unlock it.
3. Have you checked the Euro-Dollar exhange rate? 1 Euro = 1.48 USD
4. Tell what you decide to do.
5 Have a safe trip.

You should get your old phone unlocked. In terms of an environmental thing, this is what I would do and I do agree with you.... why buy a new phone when the old one can be used.

Enjoy your travels
