Nvidia APX 2500 Prototype.. actual iPhone killer?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Check out that prototype! Looks killer! I havent even heard of this device or UI I should say, until now. Looks amazing! The Garmin looked nice but still not as nice as the iPhone. This on the other hand might be able to hold its own. Now this is all subject to alot of if's and when's, but Id like to see what comes of it. Will it have decent battery life? What will the actual device look like? How stable will it be? Check it out and lets hear your thoughts!

Nvidia APX Prototype

Cool but its a prototype and I'm holding my iPhone so how is it a killer?

Posted by: sabillondesigns

looks like the iphone

When I can buy it I'll check it out. I have no loyalties to apple nor do I care if another company comes out with a better device. I'll simply sell my Iphone and get whatever is better.

It is an engineering test mule just to show what their new mobile GPU's can do in the future. Nvidia doesn't usually manufacture entire devices or even gfx cards, they make chips and reference designs for others to build. You'll never be able to buy that device but the GPU in it may be in some of the next generation devices you can buy.

Sure its only a prototype right now, so theres no telling what the actual hardware will look like, if its even built. Right now the iPhone has nothing that comes close to its UI. Looking at those pics I think this one is close, thats all Im saying. Its very impressive.

They have some shots of it playing Quake 3 which is pretty cool even though it is a little chunky. Like I said above it is a prototype to show off the future of their mobile GPU tech, something that could end up in a future iPhone or similar. The best way to think of it is GPU's that enable any cell phone using them to be PSP type powerhouses.

The problem to me with these "iPhone killers" is that they don't match up for me in one very crucial area - the .mp3 player. I love having an actual iPod on my phone and being able to manage my library with iTunes. There's a bunch of obvious small stuff that Apple left out for some reason and should've been fixed long ago with firmware upgrades, but all in all its the best phone I have ever had and I don't see myself switching to anything other than the next gen version(s) of it over the next couple years.

There's really no such thing as an iPhone killer anyway, everybody loves phones for different features. Some company releasing a decent touchscreen phone with GPS or a better camera or something could be an iPhone killer for some and be meaningless to others.

I still love the SE device better, judging from the tech demo.

iPhone 1 is going to be killed very quickly...something Apple is very much aware of.(really doesnt take much)
Quiestion is, what's in store for us with iPhone 2.

For one thing with all this competition, the future finally looks bright and innovation seems to be coming much faster than in the past.

that phone gonna have lot of problem with the battery life

The NVIDIA UI is very impressive. But not more than the iphone. I would have to see more to judge than some guy flipping through some apps. Is the touch screen as accurate as the iphone's. Is it glass, how is the build quality etc. Because the iphones build quality is top notch. I haven't seen one phone except this one that even comes close as far as the UI is concerned. The Sony's is nice, but it is still running WM. The Nokia UI is a big letdown. I guess their video was all smoke and mirrors.

There was not one phone in production that can come close to the iphone's UI, not even close. Goes to show that Steve's assumption was correct when he said they had at least a two year head start as far as the UI is concerned. He might have even been generous in his assumption's. I am looking forward to Google's android UI with a touch screen, which was not there.

I think it is very impressive that the only phone with a UI that looks like it can maybe handle the iphone's is a prototype. it looks like a Motorola USB cable on that prototype. Anyhow I have been through any major phone that was supposed to be considered as high end or a smartphone and so farthe iPhone is still #1. It lacks a few things but has a significant lead over the competition.

The cable is a mini USB... very common.
As for the high end smart phone.....what's tha have to do with the iPhone?

I dont think there will ever be an iPhone or iPod "killer". There will always be competion. Better devices will come out but the the iPod and iPhone will never be "killed".

If you look at the base of the cable it has the M on it. This is said to be the iPhone killer but it is not on the market.

Yea man the iPhone is on it's death bed. What a silly thing to say. It's been out since june and nothing out now has an interface or touch screen thats even close. Not to mention we wouldn't have these devices so fast without the iPhone spurring them on.

How does it "not take much?"

Well I think what he is saying is that the industry doesn't stand still and neither does Apple. Many companies may have the iPhone's interface directly in their cross hairs but by the time they get to market with something even remotely resembling the iPhone they may have to contend with the iPhone 2.0 which only Apple has insight on at this point.

What I mean is that depending on your needs, the iPhone can be very useless and has been "killed" the day it came out.

I still rely on my BB or Moto Q to do things for me that the iPhone can't even imagine of doing (at least not according to Apple), things related to my business and my productivity on the go.

What constitutes a good device is very user dependent and as such, an iPhone "killer" is a simple matter of opinion.

To me personally, a device that let's me edit Office files, gives me copy/paste and an array or productivity tools while being small and stable is a iPhone killer to me (and I already have 2 of those)
If they were good at media as the iPhone is, I could rely on one device for all my needs.
If the iPhone fills all of your daily needs then there is no iPhone killer out there for you.
Once again, simple matter of user needs and opinion.

It's amazing how I-Phone killers look like Iphones and have to mimic its functions.

I think Nokia has missed the bus. They are not just leaders, they are overwhelming leaders with little serious competition for a long time now.Yet their pace of innovation has been lethargic to say the least. This has left an opportunity for companies like Apple.

Leaders need to be innovative and perceived as such. Copying iphone will only damage their reputation further.

Apple's marketing plan sucks but that doesn't take from a truly innovative product in a tired and jaded mobile marketplace.

It is a complete platform... People like HTV will build sets based on them.

Posted by: JerryNY

I am not saying that what Nvidia showed isn't a complete platform solution but the APX 2500 is a standalone CPU based on an ARM 11. Almost any device that uses ARM today could potentially have an APX 2500 in its next generation.

http://www.news.com/8301-13579_3-98...g=2547-1_3-0-20

"The APX 2500 is designed as a standalone application processor for multimedia phones where talking takes a back seat to watching videos and browsing the Web."

The way I see it this is more a shot across the bow of Intels Silverthorne ship set to sail in the second half of this year and Moorestown which will really mix things up in 2009 even offering dual core models. Once Intel manages to get x86 on low power mobile chips that offer the CPU power of a Centrino notebook only a few years ago it is going to be game over for many ARM applications IMHO.

I love how often that term is thrown out there. Its a joke.
