New ROM for Tilt available 2.15.08

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: smg1976

The update isn't going to add any significant new features -- unless “working properly” counts as a feature. It's not Windows Mobile 6.1 or a magical driver to speed up the display, either. Instead, expect a bunch of bugfixes, mostly related to speed and Bluetooth issues.

Here are the things you'll no longer suffer through on your Tilt once you apply the “software version 1.62.502.0”:

* Device freezing during unlock process when a password is enabled on the device.
* Pocket Outlook unresponsive when launched while on an active voice call.
* Fast Forward and Rewind not working with Bluetooth headset and the Tilt.
* DTMF tones for the slide out QWERTY keyboard not working.
* Intermittent unresponsiveness from Touch Screen (aka Start Button Issue).
* Excessive background noise while using a BT headset.

Something was a little confusing at first. The picture at the link above still shows ROM Version 1.57.502.2, but when you actually click on the download link you get a file with 1.62.502.0 in the name. In the past the picture showed the very latest version number. Maybe HTC just hasn't gotten around to changing the picture.

Posted by: Jovian

I'ma try this...hope it really does fix that touchscreen issue.

Posted by: yie-yo

it got a little confused but the point of the picture is to show you the rom your suppost to have. which is 1.57.502.2

Posted by: emuyshondt

The picture is supposed to let you determine what the new version is so you can check that it is newer than what is in your device. Nowhere on that page does it say what the new version is. The only way to find out is to look at the filename in the "Download" link. The picture (at least for the 8525) always showed what you were going to get, not what was installed.

Theoretically there could be several updates over time so a single picture could only show the latest available.

Posted by: Jovian

anyone have any noticable differences other than whats listed on the site...i just updated mine lets see how well it works

Posted by: killadingo

So I updated to the new ROM and restored all my stuff using Sprite Restore and some of the settings I had updated using KaiserTweak were reset to default while others were restored to what I had updated using KaiserTweak. After about 12 hours of usage however, I have not noticed the HSDPA (H) show up as it used to, despite my having HSDPA enabled via KaiserTweak.

Posted by: CeluGeek

Screw the picture on HTC's website. Can someone who has installed the new ROM confirm what version they have now? (Start - Settings - System tab - Device Information)

Posted by: killadingo

1.62.502.0

Posted by: Transponder

Here's a question. I did this upgrade and both the ROM and radio are newer versions. Not sure what else has been upgraded in the Windows software. I did the Sprite restore and I'm back up running but I was thinking maybe I copied over some of the fixes that this upgrade was suppose to fix. I was wondering if it might be better to just start all over like a new phone and install all the software and tweaks. Much more trouble but would it be a better thing to do instead of a restore?

I thought all that too but the HTC Install Directions page said to go ahead and do a Sprite Restore after the ROM upgrade. I doubt they'd suggest that if an upgrade would be reset...

Thank you. I got my Tilt today and it has the 1.57 ROM with the hideous Start menu bug. I'll install the update right away.

Posted by: PacSpud

Has anyone else had SMS issues after installing this update? Since updating last night my txt msgs only come in when there are two of them waiting. So send one message and I get nothing until someone sends a second message.

I've already upgraded and tried it. The very first one comes in with no problem.

Noticed the same thing even though I had run the KaiserTweak. I ran the tweak again and then held the power button down to soft boot and now the H is back again.

Posted by: rohmerg

I have completed the upgrade. All is well except it seems I now have one less email account. I have the following Messaging accounts listed in the messaging window.
-Messages
-Blackberry
-internet email account (ntin.net)
-internet account roadrunner (TX.rr.com)
-internet account Yahoo mail
-New E-mail account

I want to add gmail however when I click new account I get the message "you have created the maximum number of accounts. One account is reserved for Outlook". So is the maximum six accounts with messages counting as one of the email accounts and the reserved outlook counting as one thus you only have 4 others you can add?

I could of sworn I had 5 email accounts under the prior rom but perhaps I am mistaken as I can't go back and check.

Thanks for this tip! I see "H" now!

I had a similar issue. After the upgrade and restored the Sprite backup, I 'lost' my Gmail account. (My Outlook account was still intact). When I tried to re-build the Gmail (IMAP) account, it didn't let me to use the original name. I had to use a new name for it. Apparently the 'lost' account is still stuck somewhere.

I've soft booted countless times since installing the new ROM and the "H" has never returned. Maybe I'll switch off the HSDPA setting, soft boot, and set it back, and soft boot again to see if that fixes it.

Interesting. Mine changed from "gmail" to "gmail.com" but I can't recall if that was by user choice or default.

Posted by: zebproctor

One less email account for me (POP), and I lost my medianet settings. Re-entered them, and after my next soft reset, they disappeared again. This is going to get annoying.

Posted by: Jovian

My phone seems to be working alot quicker. I updated it and bypassed the AT&T bloatware....it doesn't lag like it used to. Internet works as it did.

What medianet settings did you lose?

Posted by: Jovian

I have noticed sometimes....only when i go to the messaging menu that the text message will show up....otherwise it seems that the phone receives it but doesnt tell me since I see the time that in came in at.

Lost the username and password.

Also lost my opendns ip's.

Forgot to mention that Opera Mini didn't get backed up from Sprite, and neither did Google maps. Guess Sprite doesn't like Java Midlets.

Posted by: RF9

I've noticed I have 'button 6' and the side OK button now listed in the "button's" menu where they can be re-programed. As well as the (hold) versions of all buttons.
For the PTT button, I did have to totally disable PTT (delete the registry to kill it) otherwise it always overrides whatever you set to button 5. After disabling PTT, my button 5 assignments now work.

The only thing special I did is:
1) press reset before it installs the AT&T customizations (3 second countdown.)
2) Delete the PTT registry entries so PTT doesn't start up at boot.

I had this issue with my primary mail account. If you head over to xda-developers and grab "mailAccountRepair" you can run it and fix that right up.

Posted by: robbyb413

I'll tell you what's still annoying me following the ROM upgrade... when I open a SMS for some reason the message opens up scrolled way down, showing me a white screen. I have to scroll up to get to the message. Kind of strange. Anyone else having this issue? Is this some obscure setting I'm missing?

I had the same problem and after searching here and XDA found that the Kaiser Tweak Dpad Scroll Navigation under PocketIE is what is causing it. Just set it to disable (default). Soft boot and that should fix your problem.

NEVERMIND.

I think the new version of SPB Pocket Plus added this functionality.
I feel silly now...

Interesting, as my fiancee has complained of the same thing. She'll take her phone out to see if she's gotten texts, not see a notification, open messaging and up pops the notification.

Has anyone had any success turning off 3G using Fieldtest.exe? I was able to use that before flashing the update ROM, but now even setting it to GSM mode - no dice.

Just noticed mine is having issues here too. When I soft reset it fails to activate data sessions when I attempt to do something that requires the internet (sending picture messages, loading PIE, using Opera, HTC Weather, checking email) and I have to go to settings and mess with it. Then it works until I soft reset, then it seems to forget how to connect to the internet again. Frustrating.

Yes, yes, yes. This seems to be gaining some traction, a few people have mentioned it, and my fiance has the issue as well. I don't see it on mine, but I have an alternate ROM flashed to my device.

Posted by: Jovian

It happened on the original TILT rom to...after i updated...seems to happen more often....I wish someone had a clue on what is causing this.

Posted by: damba98

Speaking of fieldtest , does anyone have any idea as to why I am no longer seeing the various channels with their signal strength readings on the 'splash' screen of the fieldtest app(?) The Tilt still indicates '3G', but now I don't see the other channels (all say '0' and '-99db').

Thank in advance,
Pedro

Are you certain choosing Group > GSM in the Fiest Test mode actually turned off 3G(?) From what I have gathered it would appear to be a separate test mode based on what network you are currently connected to. Please let me know if you have any follow-up on what you were doing prior to flashing your ROM.

Thanks,
Pedro

Unless you did a backup with Sprite Backup or some other tool then you are probably out of luck.

Posted by: GWHiZiTSPHiL

no i didn't.

****.

Posted by: Jovian

I think I found the answer to the text messaging problem. As i said before sometimes my phone would receive a text message and i would not know unless i go into the messaging menu.

I believe the problem was when I would send a text message, I would receive another text that confirms my message has been sent. Anytime i exited the messaging menu before I received this confirmation text I would have that problem. I simply turned off the sent notification text with Kaiswer Tweak and I no longer have that problem.

Posted by: RF9

Very interesting. That would explain why I never have the problem. I applied that tweak immediately after upgrading.

Posted by: closet410

new tilt owner here. just updated to the new rom. now how do i:

1. get the att bloatware off?

2. get the HTC Home Plugin?

3. i've read about some problems with the weather displaying depending on the city you live, what is the weather fix

4. is it better to save these items to your phone or memory card?

5. i want to save what i have now, in case i screw something up i have a backup of the new rom untouched or messed with and i would assume i should save that on the memory card or is it better to save the back up on the device? kind of defeats the purpose if u ask me

I'd actually like to know #2. Short of hunting all over the forums on xda-developers.com, I don't know a good easy way to get the plug in. But I finally care enough to want to know.

But for #1 it's easy.
1) Hard reset the device (factory reset.)
2) You'll go through an initial setup for the time/date and touchscreen.
3) When done you'll get a dialog box saying that customizations are about to install. There will be a 3 second countdown and an ok button. When you see this dialog, press the reset button in the hole on the bottom of the device.
This will reset it and essentially cancel the 'customization.'
Warning, be ready to hit the reset button, that 3 second countdown goes quick. If you miss it, you may need to start over.

Now if you want some of those bloat items that you just went out of your way to get rid of, they can all be found in the /windows directory. They're just cab files that install those items to the device. Getting some installed are more straightforward than others. Like OZ IM has two different cabs you have to install.

Also, you'll want to grab the links to the proxy manager files.
Just go to ./windows and copy both of these following 2 files and past them to /windows/start up/programs so you'll have the links in the programs folder.
"Disable Proxy.lnk"
"Restore Proxy.lnk"

Just in case you should ever need or want to disable or re-enable the proxy.

Other than that, you should have to do nothing additional to configure the device to make it work on AT&T.

Posted by: chix

Has this ROM been endorsed by AT&T yet?

Is there a link to the ROM update from the AT&T site to confirm their endorsement?

What am I doing wrong?

Posted by: ilvla2

You're doing nothing wrong, I am getting the same thing. Either HTC pulled the download, or they're just having technical difficulties.

Posted by: Hierophant

Same here ... bah. Just got my Tilt delivered and I can't update it! wah wah

Posted by: gjjennings

Yes, I'm getting the same thing also. My radio rom is what I am mostly after, the radio, when it looses signal for 20mins or more just stops trying to connect and I have to force the thing in flight mode and then back into non-flight mode to get it to find the tower.

If someone has the rom, could you please upload it somewhere and post a link? I'd be very appreciative, this radio bug is killing me. I want to torch the phone sometimes.

Posted by: pianoman41

It's still available from HTC here:

http://www.htc.com/us/FAQ_Detail.aspx?p_id=67&act=sd

Posted by: gammite

is this even worth upgrading to?

Posted by: RF9

I've personally seen only improvements since I upgraded. Most of it pretty subtle, but the performance is a little faster and it's more stable.

Posted by: gjjennings

Did the update, now I am noticing less problems with radio.

Previously, when I was in subway he looses signal and radio decides to commit suicide. In which case, I have to force him in flight mode and then back to normal mode to get radio back online and working. It takes FOREVER to find the tower.

Anyone have any statistics for reception of the kaiser? I've had PDA phones in the past which sucked severely in terms of antenna reception.

I am on ATT network, have a data plan and live in Atlanta. Phone is in a Krussel leather case (not metal).

Posted by: gjjennings

By the way,, MANY THANKS!! (who ever it was that posted the HTC ROM update link) I'm surprised they have support for "ATT TILT" on the website. I didn't think they would ever support carriers devices like that.

I've been around a while and remember when the first pocketpc phone came out on Voicestream, or was it tmobile.

The MDA was flagship of HTC... crazy how much things have changed. Hopefully the Iphone and its interface will kick Windows asses enough to bring some glamor, style an multi touch functionality our way.

CRAP!!

the last time I did it was last month and I've added stuff since then.

*sigh*

I'll do that and see what happens. Dammit, I should've fully read this thread before doing this upgrade. LOL

Posted by: NikiLuv73

Question, how often should you do the sprite backup???

Posted by: pianoman41

I've noticed, as others already reported, that when I did the upgrade I 'lost' several of my POP email accounts. I went to set them back up and when I look at the accounts list, they are not there but when I go to add the account and name them the same name that I had previously, I get an error message saying an account with that name already exists. That tells me that Windows still knows about the account but for some reason they aren't showing.

Does anyone know where in the registry I can find this so I can delete them and start over?

I had a similar situation happen (account showing in options, but not showing on account picker). In my case, it was just me. I had input the wrong password in the settings, and for some reason it wouldn't show up (or give wrong password message, etc). When I fixed the password, the account was then showing again.

Posted by: NikiLuv73

I'm having that same isssue.

Posted by: jerryg

I did the rom update on my Tilt and lost my 3 email accounts. I have tried to put them back in but they won't work. Active sync is dead also. I am waiting for an answer from ATT/ HTC support.

Posted by: cephus6

Did you perform a hard reset after the update?

I backed mine up with Sprite backup before the update and after the ROM update installed. I performed a hard reset. Then I restored the backup file and everything worked fine.

Posted by: NikiLuv73

yes, I did.

Posted by: NikiLuv73

I think this new update has messed me up. *cries*

Posted by: Andru1313

So Far i like the update. Took me a bit to get my phone back to the way I like it but going well. I tried to use the sprite back up but I had a password from my exchange server and when I restored I could not use my password so had to hard reset it and put on all my applications from scratch...

One quirk I did notice not sure if anyone else has this but I use the HTC homeplugin. When I switch Profiles like go from silent to ring it does not make any sound when the phone rings or i get a text. Have to soft reset the phone to get the sound working.

Posted by: jerryg

I did a hard reset, let the tilt customize itself and tried to sync, it worked. Then I restored my files from my storage card and now it won't sync again. I think I will get another card and a reader and put back each program one at a time to find my problem. HTC/ATT also told me to do a hard reset, but that wasn't listed in the instructions when I did the rom update.

Posted by: pianoman41

My ActiveSync is also broken (I'm guessing from the update). I can connect to the device and I can browse/transfer/install files and programs without issue, but it give a sync error and shows the phone as 'Guest' and refuses to sync, and most of the options on the desktop PC are greyed out. When I run the ActiveSync Troubleshooter it says everything is working fine.

Posted by: jerryg

I went to the HTC web site last night and the rom update was gone, I wonder if they pulled it because of the problems. Luckily I still had it on my computer and I flashed the rom again this time I did not reinstall all my programs and email and sync are working ok.

Posted by: chix

Everytime I try to install the update (via ActiveSync), I get a connect error # 202.

I have uninstalled and re-installed ActiveSync and when connected back up I still get the same error message from the ROM update software.

Suggestions?

Posted by: vovillamor

Hello All,

I just did the upgrade as downloaded from the HTC site but my ROM version is still showing as 1.57.502.2.

My primary reason for installing the upgrade was to see if it would fix a problem on my Tilt where it would lock up after making or receiving a phone call. All other functions worked worked flawlessly, except for the phone function.

The upgrade seems to have solved the phone problem, but I'm concerned that my ROM version doesn't show 1.62.

If this upgrade does nothing else but solve my phone function problem, I really don't have anything to complain about.
My ROM upgrade went through just fine.
I didn't lose any of my e-mail accounts or settings.
My SPB backup restored just fine.
The only thing extra was that I had to Activesync had to combine and resync my data, but at least it didn't ask me to create a new partnership.

I'm just curious about my old ROM version number displaying instead of 1.62.

Posted by: gjjennings

I said the hell with ATT roms, I was fed up with things not working and the phone being crippled.

This is the ROM I am using, love it!!
Ruu_Signed_Duttys_WM6.1_Official_5.2.19209_1_58_16 _27 [FIX]

This is the radio:
1.58.26.20

GPS works great, better reception, better battery life.

You first have to get the stuff, locate here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...ttySeriesKaiser

Also, before you can flash you have to do hardSPL, but the tilt is a ***** because he's just special and white screens. There is a fix, just search tilt white screen and you will find it. Instructions are good just do it to a T.

Good luck guys! I hate to say it, but spare me the questions. All you need to know is out there on that wiki, so read up.

Posted by: gjjennings

Also, you may want the default keyboard, I know I did. So search for it:
OEM Default keyboard.cab

Second, after I installed everything and it auto configed the internet for att, I did this:
ATT Settings.cab

It speeds things up a little, then removed the auto config setup.

One important tip, HARD RESET THE PHONE AFTER YOU FLASH IT TO THE DUDDY ROM. DO THIS, SERIOUSLY. I FORGOT AND PHONE ACTED CRAZY!!

I also flashed the WM rom first before flashing the radio, then once I booted into the rom I flashed radio rom, all worked like a champ. JUST REMEMBER, HARD RESET! HARD RESET, HARD RESET!

Second, after I installed everything and it auto configed the internet for att, I did this:
ATT Settings.cab

Messing with cooked roms is like playing with fire..someone will get burned. I would not recommend it to just anyone, but advanced users. Otherwise you'll have a bunch of people with Bricked phones.

Also most of the cooked roms include or require you to update to a new radio version. A lot of the radio versions once installed can not be downgraded to a previous version if it causes problems.

I'll stick to ATT/HTC stock roms and customize them as needed through software and registry edits. Those roms are safe and don't void your warranty like all the cooked roms do.

So good call. If your not advanced or can stand to financially purchase another tilt, steer clear of cooked rom's.

Sure, you can brick the phone if your not following instructions and careful. It voids the warranty-big deal! Seriously. When you see how crippled the phone is after running a cooked rom you'll thank me. And the risk is not as high as you think.

If I hadn't used a cooked rom I would be throwing the tilt out for an HTC labeled device. That is how bad these ATT roms are when unmodified. As far as the radio stack goes, yes you can downgrade! Look at the radio version of what I listed in comparison to yours, already light years ahead of ATT development. I get better battery life, reception, tower switching, fast GPS orientation, better bluetooth pairing. Why would anyone want to go back from the version I have?

Its like your scared of the dark here, really.

If you read more about the ROM I use, it happens to be one of ATT's beta versions. Why they don't release it behooves me.

With today's tools baking a phone is pie easy, and for the most part, safe. Just have some kind of battery backup and run no programs when phone is in write mode. Even those you mess up, read the forum, you can get it into boot loader mode and then write it again.

So, seriously, if you need to hold your blankets as tight as the crippled phone go for it. But its not that hard with todays advancements, in fact, cooking with ROMS is the identical process to loading an ATT rom.

Again, warning! Cooking is an addiction, once you start or see the new kinds of functionality REAL HTC SOFTWARE has on your device... I'm cooked for life. I will never go back.
