Receiving SMS from alphanumeric numbers like Banks

I cannot receive messages form my bank, cell company, credit card company, etc.
I have discovered this is due to the fact that pre 1.1.1 iphones do not support alpha numeric SMS senders(???)
Is there any way any of you have come across a solution for this as I don't want to upgrade the phone. This is due to the if it ain't broke, don't fix it..and secondly..i'm petrified to do it!!

Thanks for the reply. Guess I have read a few horror stories that the phone may become unstable, get locked or get completely bricked. I really want to upgrade but this is holding me back.

If you're nervous, don't upgrade.

I don't want to upgrade if I can help it, but as my first post says, I need the SMS bug fixed and upgrading, apparently, seems to be the only way to solve this. Again, if there is a solution guys, please, let me have it.

Your a legit AT&T customer aren't you? I'm just assuming cause you have Cingular listed as your carrier and sorry if I'm mistaken but that's the same company as AT&T right? If so you shouldn't have any problems upgrading to 1.1.3. I haven't heard many horror stories from AT&T customers that upgrade. Just from us guys that have to hack the damn thing to work. ;-) I don't think you'll be sorry. Btw, are u going to be jailbreaking it?

My alerts didn't work when I was on t-mobile. All my other phone got them except the iPhone. As soon as I switched to at&t they started working.

This applied to 102 & 112 btw. I had switched by the time 113 came out.

Hi, I was a Cingular customer but since I travel a lot to specific places, its cheaper to have local sims. Therefore the unlock.
If I follow the instructions in the Wiki, should I be ok for 1.1.3?
