My k790i was flashed to k790a....

Hey guys... I sent my phone over to my local repair shop because I had that EFI problem (wouldnt boot up except for flashing IR light). They fixed it... but now the phone thinks its a k790a rather than a k790i. they ****ed up! Is this debilitating in any way? i used to have either a G or an E next to the reception bars, but now i don't have either... It also booted up saying Suncom (!?!?!?WTF??) the first time, but it went away....

I then did a EROM upgrade using wotan and tried to flash it back to a k790i... but i ****ed up somewhere and it still says its a k790a... help anyone? am i losing out on anything even? I don't use the data services.

K790i Tri-band EDGE 900/1800/1900 MHz

K790a Tri-band EDGE 850/1800/1900 MHz

I'm sure your fine, since the bands are hardware dependent. My k790a is flashed to k790c so I have the Chinese language on the phone and everything works the same.

check and see what bands are open in the service menu

If they match what your provider has then you are fine...

There are some GDFS scripts to change the bands around on the 790's
They are all apparently capable of quad band, but marketed differently (dont ask me why).

FIRST, make the backup of your GDFS, then download the setool2lite 1.11
if you dont have setool 1.11 download here... http://www.4shared.com/file/3726042...rified=6a41f38e

Then open your notepad and write the folowing line...
gdfswrite:000000AC12

then click "write script" and connect your phone holding "c" button...
this may take about 10 seconds, detach your phone and test...

>*<<*<*
Services info
Configs...

It may show GSM850 GSM900 GSM1800 GSM1900

THIS WAS STOLEN FROM HERE http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=22267
I take NO credit for this....

BACKUP YOUR GDFS B4 YOU TRY THIS!!! (just do it)

Just found the complete band list
gdfswrite:000000ACXX

Change XX to the desired Code:

Set Data Comm. Preferred Service to "EDGE and GSM" instead of "GSM Only"

wow!!!
hope somebody can do GDFS hack to enable US1700 UMTS on K850

Posted by: MP

if its possible im sure they will when DB3150 gets a little older..

Wirelessly posted (HP 211 and/or SE K790a: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

if the hacking can be done, I will definitely buy one more K790i

DUDE. DO NOT DO THE GDFS WRITE

Your phone will have the K790i bands no matter what firmware you have on it....

G = GPRS
E = EDGE

It doesn't mean GOOD and EXCELLENT

All you need to do is flash your phone back to a K790i firmware. I have the Chinese-HK firmware if you want it, msg me, its a simple fix.

AGAIN, NO GDFS WRITE!!!!

Posted by: RLP06

BTW, why do you have a K790i and not a K790a in the US?

no, just enable quad-band on K790

Posted by: MP

790i works in the US just not on 850 unless you do the gdfs hack thingie...

Others say that it does actually work. I was a little skeptical at first, but lots of people say it works...

Are you sure that's all you have to do to switch a to i ? Flash FW and FS ?
No EROM or GDFS?

Posted by: Scottish Skyedance

done
by the service menu, the phone is quad-2G now, but I have no chance to test GSM900
but here is you have to do
use notepad to put on this
gdfswrite:000000AC12
save as .txt file (you can use whatever you want)
then use setoo2lt, find open misc files "...", locate the .txt file
power off the phone
plug the phone when pressing C
press Write Script
mine took 25 seconds

Posted by: MP

I dont think this would work on the k800 tho.. I think the 800 has a different antenna.. Thats where people are getting confused..

if you're getting it from SE-NSE, read my posts... I don't think the people in brazil know what they are talking about...

It doesn't work... the hardware isn't there..

Posted by: RLP06

It just displays quadband, but its not for real...
try blocking all but 850 on your k790i, it won't work

Posted by: Scottish Skyedance

I don't care that much
my K790a is over one year, keep using it till quad-3G C series comes

Yeah, I was just saying how it wasn't real thats all.

K790 is a great phone, just bought a K810 though

Posted by: Scottish Skyedance

this hacking is NOT recommended
caused my phone has "no network" error
then change the code of the .txt file to 11, and do same procedure again
now the phone is back to normal

I thought you said it worked?

LOL, seems like people on both forums like to ignore what I say....

GDFS patch for quad band does NOT work, and it isn't recommended that you mess with your GDFS if not necessary...

Posted by: RLP06

Also, back on topic, as I said, just because your K790i is flashed to K790a, its still going to have 900/1800/1900, just check >*<<*<* in configuration, it'll say 900/1800/1900

Just like how my K790a flashed to K790i says 850/1800/1900 (without GDFS patching)

Posted by: Scottish Skyedance

it's kinda difficult for me now
though the phone works, streaming doesn't, even I recovered GDFS
I don't want to buy new phone this time till X1 or C series with US1700 3G comes out
I have no choice but I have to use N73 or E61 for time being
SE, please implement US1700 on generic K850a

it shows all 4 bands with this patch in the config menu..

Trying it out for a few days... -- what north America teco's even use 900 ?

Posted by: MP

I did always think it was funny that this is printed on the antenna of the k790a

I turn back on today at work.....
BANG! signal bar is gone, no network!
I don't know is it GDFS related
luckily I made a backup, hope it'll be recovered

If I make my phone quadband using the script, it works... it works, of course it works, it was working before... it SHOWS quadband....

but try blocking off all bands except the one you didn't have...

I'm just showing my results, and my findings based on logical testing... just providing with 1 opinion, I'm sure if others test, it won't be just me

Just for reference this patch WILL NOT WORK ON K790a .. We have all tried it and ALL confirmed it as not working...

I patched then headed out of 850 --- BAM no network.. Headed back into 850 and still had NO NETWORK -- had to restore GDFS b4 i got signal again... Dont do it... It will not work dont listen to others that say it does...

I think that was a valid answer... that no north american telcos use 900mhz

(I'm excluding mexico, I don't know anything about telcos in mexico)
