NES Emulator White Screen 1.1.3

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: naughtyangel_7

So I updated to 1.1.3
Jailbroke, unlocked.
Since it requires the new NES emulator not yet avaliable from installer, I downloaded it manually from http://www.zdziarski.com/projects/nesapp/, unzipping it into a .app folder and copying it into root/applications.
I got some roms and placed them in root/var/mobile/media/ROMs/NES

When I tap the NES icon it pops up a white screen, stays up for about 15-20 seconds then turns off, back to springboard.

Did I do something wrong, or did anyone find a solution to this?? (I am using WinSCP)

you have to change the permissions to 755 using winscp or I also use squid.

Wow man you rock...
I had changed the folder permission, but I didnt realize that I had to change all the individual files permission, went into the folder... ctrl all, changed permissions for all and we`re up and running.
I could kiss you.

Glad to help.

which roms did u put there?

Posted by: steve0077

I want to use winscp but once I install it do i need to change the password? I say this because I got this msg after installing BSD "do not use passwd to change the password on 1.1.3, it is currently broken and will make springboard crash continuously:” I'm a noob at this so this msg may not even relate to winscp and might be for another prog. Also after I get winscp I only need open SSH from installer right? and once installed do I need to open up the ssh prog or something? I'm sorry if these questions sound very dumb just want to know everything before proceeding

how are you putting the roms on there? i used iphonebrowser but get an error?

Posted by: naughtyangel_7

Ok here are the steps: (for 1.1.3 fw)
MANUALLY INSTALLING NES APP
Install open SSH on your phone (this can be found in installer app) and make sure it is on (if you use systems or something, otherwise it will automatically be on.
Download WinSCP
Plug your iPhone in and launch Win SCP
Enter your iphones ip address in the host blank
Enter root as the username
and enter alpine as the password

Allow it to connect, if u get a warning saying that you cannot be guaranteed it is the computer u think it is or something hit continue ...

Next you need to get the NES emulator which you can get here: http://www.zdziarski.com/projects/nesapp/ **Make sure you get the correct one for your firmware version as there is more then one avalialbe on that site, as I said again this method is for 1.1.3 only because on older firmware the location for installing the app and roms is different.

Anyhow, take the file you downloaded and unzip it. (I had to unzip it twice for some reason untill I got a folder. Go into the extracted folder, then go into the folder called build.
Inside you will find a folder with the extension .app.
That will be the folder you need to copy onto your phone.

Go back to WinSCP and go to the folder <root> on your iphone. In that folder will be subfolders. One is called Applications. You will need to copy and paste your NES.app folder that you extracted earlier into Applications. ** This is where we fix what causes the white screen.... go into your applications folder, and into the new NES folder you just copied. You will see a number of files. Press CTRL+A to select all the files in that folder and click properties. Set the permission (OCTAL) to 755 and click ok.

INSTALLING ROMS.
After you get your roms from wherever you get them first make sure that they end in .nes sometimes they may be zipped and that wont work.

Ok so back into WinSCP, pop back into the original <root> folder.
From there go var -> mobile -> Media
Here you will need to create a new folder (called new -> directory)
Call it ROMs (make sure its written just like that)
Go into the new ROMs folder you created and make yet another folder this time called NES

Now go into NES and copy all the NES roms you want to use into this folder.
Once done, powercycle your phone, and the NES icon should now be on your springboard.

Playy away.
If you have are using earlier versions of firmware I think you can install the NES emulator from installer and the location for your roms is /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES.
Enjoy.

I have a guide here with pics on installing nes roms with winscp

Great guides I will go try this now and see how it works. Quick question though about SSH, what is the app from installer that gives you the option to turn SSH off manually? or does it come with a setting in the open SSH app? reason is I hear if you keep it on ppl can get into your phone since the password is known by everyone and their mom's. Also if there is no app that can turn it off and on can I just uninstall SSH after and my NES app will still work? Oh and ruff does your method work for 1.1.3? and how many roms are in that package?

The app to turn SSH on or off does not come with SSH, You can downloaded either services or boss prefs (i found boss prefs works a little better with 1.1.3)
from installer. You can install it after you add the NES app or before it makes no difference as long as you have SSH on while you are installing NES otherwise it wont connect. The apps allow you to toggle things like wifi edge and ssh on or off at anytime. So you can switch SSH off when you dont need it and switch it back on when you do.

You have a very good guide but it doesn't help anyone using 1.1.3 who needs to install the new version of NES emulator manually. Since it is not located in installer and since the location for the roms is not the same it doesn't help us 1.1.3 users.
It also doesn't address the main issue that this thread was started for which is the white screen and shutdown on 1.1.3.

I think by posting that link you are only going to confuse anyone searching for a solution to white screen on 1.1.3 even more since your guide doesn't address any of the issues discussed here.

I followed this instructions, so happy to have finally figured out where the actual .app is haha. so thanks for that!

however, it seems i didnt need to change any permissions..i am using a mac and fugu, and couldnt figure out how to do them all at once, so i decided i would see if it worked before manually changing each permission for each file and it does! from what i can see the CVS folder and NES file within the NES.app folder are the only two that have 755 permissions.

That's my input and thank you for the info! Glad to have a working NES app again

glad u got it fixed, if u need roms.. lemme know.. i have 11000... LOL

what are the best roms?

Posted by: backbraker25

I don’t know if anyone of you guys had this happen to you once you completed the exercise above but once I finished everything and restated the phone while on the apple logo after a few seconds I got a bunch of vertical flashing white lines from top to bottom of the screen than it took me back to the springboard and appears to be working fine but that looked kind of scary!
I’m using OTB 1.1.2 Unlocked w/Ziphone GUI (PC running on Windows XP)

Posted by: steve0077

Back that happened to me once too never seen it since though so must not be anything crazy lol. I finally got the NES to work and it's great thanks guys. Only thing I can't get to work is the saved games. I save a game before I exit and when I try to go back into the nes emulator and click on saved games tab there is nothing there. Am I doing anything wrong? I even turn on auto save games and nothing.

Super Mario Bros 3

Has anyone had a problem saving any nes games? Before I exit the game it asks to save the game and I do but when i go back in it under the saved games tab nothing ever shows up.

Posted by: kebeeeen

^ same thing happens to me..

Posted by: JEsTer10

maybe this is a problem with the newest version.

Posted by: uchok00

Same here......I can play the game, but I can't save it.

But I believe there's a temporary remedy, right when I want to get out of NES and continue to play later, instead of hitting "ROM List" on the screen, I press the home button (the ROUND button below the screen).

When I go back to NES game again, the game will left off when I was last. But the screen location is a bit mess up. You'll see what I mean.

Posted by: superquang

Everytime I save my game and try to recall it, the saved games list is blank. anyone else has 1.1.3 and the new 2.05 NES.app with working saved games?

Posted by: uchok00

Negative.......I have a 1.1.3 unlocked/jailbroken iPhone with AT&T, and NES 2.05........still can't find save games.

I moved the ROM games to the new directory path that it asked for. Same result.

Posted by: backbraker25

Has anyone ever resolved this “no save” issue?

Posted by: jsh22TUAKRON

Holy crap this is so difficult!

iPhoneBrowser keeps asking me if i have successfully used jailbreak.

Well I have. What should I do?

Posted by: steve0077

^^ Use winscp

Posted by: steve0077

OK have to ask this again, has anyone found a way to finally save games in the nes emulator? Is there a new update that works?
