does wifi turn off when phone is locked(sleep)?

hey all, i always turn my wifi off when i dont use it so it doesnt drain my battary but my friend recntly told me that when the phone is locked, and by locked i mean when its in the scree "slide to unlock", he said the wiif is not functioning in that mode, therfore not draining the battery, so is wifi really off when the phone is locked or it still drains some battery even tho its inactive?

It's off when the phone is in sleep mode.

I dont think it ever turns off cause I get maill all day on my phone and I can only get mail when i'm on wireless

I think it turns on depending on when you set your iPhone to check for email. For example, if you set it to check email every 15 minutes, it will activate wifi during sleep mode, search for new mail, and then turn off again.

However, if you have your phone plugged in and charging, the wifi stays on even while in sleep mode.

Agreed.

Reason being....

When I have Wifi on I see the wifi reception icon at the top.

Then I turn off my phone.

When I turn the screen back on I see the wifi icon come up but only for a second - it then changes to E for Edge - then a second or two later back to the wifi icon.

I believe that when it's in sleep mode it switches to Edge. It may turn Wifi on while sleeping to check for mail and then turn it back off when it's done - but I don't think we can ever check for that.
