So I made a trip to AT&T today asked a few questions & left with an 8gb iPhone. Got it home activated it. I looked to see what firmware it was running & it was on 1.1.2 so I upgraded to 1.1.3 (hope I didn't mess that up). So now I'm ready to jailbreak it. I want to make sure I'm right before I proceed.
1. I downloaded ZiPhone 2.2 GUI Does this need to be extracted to any certain place? It seems I read that it must be in C: I have it under my documents/ZiPhone 2.2/ZiPhone (I'm using xp)
2. I have a O.O.B 1.1.2 upgraded to 1.1.3 will it matter if I use ZiPhone to jailbreak it only? No need to unlock & it's already activated.
3. What program do I need to be able to add themes?
4. Can someone point me to a guide for SSH or what ever it's called (read/write phone files)
Thanks for any help you can give I just want to make sure I have everything straight before I start.

Well i would like to add themes, custom icons, games, mainly theme customization.
Change the plain black background to a image, custom carrier logo, signal icons, etc...To start with maybe more later on.

If you use ziphone to upgrade to 1.1.3, you should see an installer icon below the homescreen. That is all you need to install those apps you listed.

I had already upgraded to 1.1.3 then I used Ziphone 2.2 to jailbreak. So is it safe to install apps like springboard?

I have installed BSDsystem and ssh so far no issues. If you did a DFU restore, I am sure the apps will work.

I haven't done any restores, just upgraded it to 1.1.3 through iTunes. Then used ZiPhone to jailbreak. I got the installer icon & thats as far as I've gotten.

have you opened the installer icon? All the apps are in their folders.
