Anyone else here think the 3G iPhone will not be that big of a jump?

I figure that since the iPhone is supposed to be recieving functionality updates for a certain period of time (whatever this accounting crap is), the next iPhone will not be very much better spec-wise? Maybe a better battery and of course the 3G chip, but visually I really think it won't be that different and the majority if not all software changes will probably come to the EDGE iPhone..

Anyone else agree?

Considering they'll be running the same software the only difference will be in the hardware. GPS, 3g, better battery and more HD space is my guess. Maybe a better processor as well.

I'm sure Apple will release something for it that's possible on our phones but will only be on the new 3G versions.

Though this could happen I don't believe this because:
1.The old AppleTV just got the features of the newer version, though this could be because it sold terribly the first time. They both are covered for updates for a certain period of time though.
2.Apple makes consistent money off iPhones. iPods got new features with each revision that weren't available to the previous generation but it was a one-time sale unlike the iPhone.
3.The iPhone is selling so well already I'm pretty sure a 3G version will just be placed out to get the people sitting on the fence for 3G support to come on board. Almost all the other interface complaints are probably going to be sorted out through firmware/SDK (mms, video recording, copy&paste)

Well where I live there is 3G and it would be nice to have faster internet at times when I cannot get a wifi signal.
And wherever it is that you do live, there will probably be 3G soon enough and you will then know how those of us feel that already have those fast signals whizzing by us all day long but no way to use them on the iPhone.

There is no guarantee the next generation iPhone will be running the same software. In fact, if they put in a different CPU type, such as an Intel chip, it will be running different software.

I truly hope that Apple releases their 2nd-Generation iPhone with much more than simply a 3G chip and GPS functionality. I actually give Steve Jobs more credit than that...

New hardware, faster processor, better battery, better (higher and more adjustable) volume in earpiece and speakerphone, simpler/faster/easier phone functions, and packed full of useable applications...THAT iPhone will get my money again!!

I agree. Just another iPhone with 3G won't cut it, especially for me where there is no 3G.

AT&T's HSDPA network looks more like liverspots on the face of America ... it's not going to work.

Just wait till the end of 2008, and we will see what it looks like.

On the topic:

why do you think apple left out copy and paste? Why do you think the left out camcorder? Why do you think they left out gps? Why do you think they left out 3G? WHy do you think they only had 8gb of space at first?

Apple thought about this before they released iphone 1.0. They are smart. With their marketing techniques, and their designers, I promise you they will make is a "big jump."

Because that's all that was available at any kind of reasonable price at that time?

By big "push" i'm assuming you mean the whopping 80 new cities with 3G in the US?

Think about it.. that means less than 2 cities per state will be getting Wi-Fi... I live in a town that is 3 hours from ANY major city (Nashville, Memphis, or Louisville, KY)... all which already have 3G access..

So let's say that they want to go to the next largest markets near my area (Jackson, TN and Clarksville, TN.. about an hour away) that would take up both of the state of Tennessee's cities.. and that's just in WEST TN.

I love AT&T as a company, but as far as HDSPA coverage, Verizon and even Sprint have them beat (although sprint doesn't work here..except roaming).

That's why i'm not too concerned about a 3G iphone... my edge actually usually runs near 200k anyway because AT&T isn't popular in this area, so not too many people are clogging up our towers... so I have absolutely no complaints about EDGE speed.

In EU the lack of 3G in the iPhone is an absolutely deal breaker for many consumers.

Apple will be making a 3G phone for them regardless of whether they even wanted to make one or not. Too many people out there simply aren't going to give the iPhone a second thought w/o it.

Truth.

As it is now, with the lack of nationwide coverage, 3G is a marketing tool...nothing more. And, unless you want to spend an additional $10-15 a month for a proper GPS system (i.e.:TeleNav)...the GPS addition to the iPhone is also just as worthless IMHO.

all i ask for is HSDPA support 850/1900Mhz.
thats all i need right now.
