Five icon dock in 1.1.3???

I've read that it may not be possible any more, the springboard is now coded in a 4x4 matrix (grid) that can't be changed. but the question is, is the dock part of this matrix that can't be changed? because you can move one or more items away from the dock and the remaining items will condense to fit centered, rather than staying in grid formation.
