Why do I have an echo on my Razr Maxx? (it also did this with Samsung Flipshot)

I'm using Verizon Wireless as my carrier and I'm having one heck of an annoying problem.
When I'm talking to people, it sounds like I'm talking into a wind tunnel or something. I guess you can describe it as an echo.
If I hold the microphone directly at my mouth the echo/sound/thing is horrible, but if I hold the hold away from my mouth (eg. below/above) then it sounds perfectly fine.
I have this same problem on my wife's Samsung Gleam and also on the Samsung Flipshot. However, I do NOT have this problem on my Audiovox CDM-9900 (very old phone).
What's going on here?
