I don't know if you can do it through active sync, but you can always forward a text message to whatever e-mail account you access with your computer and save them that way.

Not with Active Sync. It takes a 3rd party solution e.g. Jeyo Mobile Companion.

I can't speak for the original BJ, but with the BJII, there is software on the CD it came with (Media Wizard, I think) that backs up the data on the phone. It also has a feature to copy all text messages. It stores each one as its own file so it takes a long time if there are a lot of messages.
