Ipod Touch users, do you like your's? Thinking about buying one.

I'm thinking about buying an Ipod Touch to replace my ipod mini and ipod nano. How do you like your's so far? What is browsing like on the device?

(Please don't recommend the iPhone instead...i'm with Rogers so I'd have to get an unlocked one and I'm happy with my Blackberry. I don't really have a desire to switch phones, just get a new ipod.)

Thanks guys

You might find more responses in the Audio forum instead of the Lounge.

But anyway, yes, I have one (a 16GB) and like it very much. I also have several other iPods so, for me, the touch fits a certain niche:

whats the difference in price between the 16gb touch and the 16gb iphone? im thinking - if youre gonna get the touch and the price difference isnt too much, might as well get the added benefit of having the phone attached (again, providing the difference in cost isnt much - am i over-emphasizing that point?)

But anyway, yes, I have one (a 16GB) and like it very much. I also have several other iPods so, for me, the touch fits a certain niche:
  • it's a very good video playback system (ripped from my collection via HandBrake)
  • a good music playback system (it's bulky compared to a traditional iPod, has less battery life and frankly, the controls aren't as convenient although it is much more fun to use)
  • an excellent mobile browsing platform (assuming the presence of usable WiFi)
  • a fair-to-good PDA (calendar, address book, etc.) platform.

Thanks for the info, I'll try searching the Audio forum as well.

I just looked up the price of an unlocked iphone on 2 random sites (easycell and sntraders) and the price difference is quite big (one is selling the 8gb for $625, the other is selling it for $850... other sites may have it for less). A 16gb ipod touch is ~$369 CDN at Best Buy right now. So there's a pretty big difference, lol.

Also if I got an iPhone I'd have to switch data plans (I know there's wireless but I like to have data as well for when wifi isn't available or I'm on the go) and I'm happy with my Blackberry and BB data plan. Right now I think it makes more sense for me to just get an ipod touch, costwise and needswise.

I just checked it out...thank you for the extremely detailed response! I appreciate it! I'll probably get the 16gb as well... right now I have an 8gb nano and I havent even used up 2/3 of the space, LOL.

I got a 16gig iPod Touch for Xmas. Overall I like it but there are a few things that I wish were better. First off, the battery. This could be a problem with my particular unit, but it flat out sucks when I am watching videos on it. If I am going to be watching something that I transferred over from itunes off my computer, I will turn the wifi off to save the battery. The longest time I have been able to watch a video on it was 2.5 hours. That was after a night of charging via my wall charger. I had nothing else on. Apple claims that it should get 5 hours, but in reality, not many things get the battery life projected from the manufacturer. But half that, I don't think thats acceptable. I know that video takes up a lot of juice, I used to watch videos on my Treo 750 all the time and most people know if they had ever own a 750, the battery is horrible since it is so small. I would easily be able to watch 2.5 hours of video and still have plenty of battery left to make calls. The ipod has a much bigger battery.

However when I am just listening to music, the battery life is much better than the 3.5 year old ipod I had been using. I love using safari on it since it is able to load some pages that my BB/Tytn II can't. Again, when using wifi, the battery drains pretty quick. Youtube can kill the battery fast as well. Since it is both video and wifi, I get about 1.5 hours tops when using that app.

It may sound like I do not like it in this post, but I really do. The interface is intuitive, the screen is huge and the device itself is a good size. This is the first ipod that I have owned with a color screen, so that in itself is a novelty for me. Another reason why I wanted it is because it does have a spinning hd in it. My first ipod did and that went bad a little over a year after I bought it. At the time that I got this one, it had the biggest amount of flash memory out of all the flash based ipods and iphones. It still has the most amount of space in flash (32gig). If you wanted an ipod with most amount of flash memory, I would go for it.

Agreed, but i do get around 4 and a half hours for straight video. Come to think of it, for the 3 months i've had my touch i havent seen the battery drop below 50% ever (Maybe once or twice, considering i sometimes play iphysics for a long period of time).....I recommend getting an ipod touch, never ever regretted purchasing it.

i have the iphone and i love interface. However, the battery life is killer! I need to charge the phone at least twice a day. Get the itouch if you listen to music all the time.

iriver also have a touch screen pmp player W7, it is so good as well.

reasons to buy an ipod touch over iphone...

-lighter
-thiner
-subtle black front boarder instead of shiny boarder on the front (preference)
-shiny back instead of matte metal of the iphone (preference)
-better battery life

but either way both are easy as heck to jailbreak now so go for either...

I love the touch, but I have a classic. Obviously space isn't an issue for you, so I'll leave that out. Another reason I couldn't get a touch is because you have to look at it when you are using it. I like to use my classic in my pocket, backpack, running, sleeping, or whatever, and I like being able to just press a button to pause of change the song. I also use it in the soft pouch so it makes a difference.

If you want a new Apple iPod go with the Touch, you'll love it.I wasn't sure if was gonig to like mine so I bought an 8GB which I found on sale for $249 and I love what I can do with it.The Safari Web Browser on Wi-Fi is everything the reviews say. I don't have a huge digital music collection so the smaller memory was not an issue.Just an amazing device.Does 90% of the things people buy the iPhone for and I didn't have to change my Cell Co.When more apps become available I know it's going to be even better. That's the nice thing about the Touch,it can grow and do even more things besides play music & video. When the time comes I'll happily upgrade to the biggest memory model I can afford.

I use my iPod Touch with the bluetooth iMuff headphone. I can keep the iPoT in my pocket, and control it from the headphone. The iMuff allows me to control the volume, skip to the next or previous song, and pause the music. The iMuff can also connect to my Samsung A950 bluetooth cell phone. Once connected, the iMuff will generate a series of beeps if a call is received. Pressing the headphone music play button, pauses the iPoT and answers the phone. Press it again to hangup the call and resume the iPoT music.

My main complaint about the iMuff is the headband's softness (designed for comfort). The soft headband causes bass sound quality loss. You can get much better bass sound quality at lower volumes by pressing the ear piece against your head with your fingers. However, who walks around like that? When I purchased the iMuff, it was the only bluetooth headphone which could answer a cell phone and fully support the iPod via the docking port. Now there are many others eg iCombi etc.

I enjoy my iPod Touch. If you have a long commute or car trip, it really couldn't be easier to rent a movie on iTunes and transfer it to your iPod. Movies really do look great on the big screen.

Web browsing is...decent. It's not exactly comparable to a computer, but it's still pretty good for a device that you can hold in the palm of your hand.

I really like the iPod touch, its great for music, video, pictures and entertainment if you have jailbroken it.

that occurs to me to..I'm stuck between, I need a new player to replace the old nano, but might as well get the phone capability too, right?

Damn you, marketing people! :P

So far, I've been using every feature but listening to music. The safari web browser is good when I can't wait 1 minute to turn on my computers to search for something; the videos won't leave bored in bed; and I've been customizing it to the ying yang for the past 24 hours.

I'm getting used to the touchscreen, and of course I'm getting irritated by iTune's sync functions, but overall, its the best device I bought this year.

Posted by: experiment626

I'll be honest, while I love my iPod Touch,as is,I really wish Apple would have given it a physical keyboard. The Samsung Glyde has one and I don't feel that the Glyde is too thick or bulky with it.The touchscreen keyboard works far better than I expected but it's just not convienent for heavy use.

Hi slowly drifting,
Hi, it was a fantastic dating advice that you shared with us.But i have a no idea.
Thanks a lot!

This thread has been a big help for me. Since I also plan on taking the dive and purchasing a (16GB) iPod Touch. Sure it's going to hurt my bank account, but eh.. A week of work should cover it.

Anyways, I was also considering getting the iPhone on a 3 year Rogers plan to take advantage of the lower ($199) price point. But eh, full time touchscreen for a phone? Naw, I'll pass. I'll stick with Sony Ericsson phones.. Might get a XPERIA; Touch Screen AND full keyboard.

I also was planning on getting a Zune, but I decided not to, because I LOVE the iTune's software. It's very organized and nicely done.

Back to the point: I'm getting the 16GB iPod Touch. That's that. Accessory recommendations anyone?

Speck Armorcase. It rules! and Shure Headphones.

Oh man, I was staring at the price tag of the 16GB iPod Touch(V2) and I gotta say, it kinda intimidate me a little. $369 Canadian. Ouch.

Im glad everyone seems to like the touch because I just ordered an 8gig one earlier today. I already have a 20gig clasic photo ipod thats full so I figured I would finally get a new one (even though I had to sell a computer to get it, but it was a windows with vista so its ok )

but to my questions

how good does the web browser work

does it sync to ical and address book and other mac programs

I'll tell you how it works: Fantastically! I can't really describe it myself since I don't even have one. But I've fiddled around with my cousins iPod Touch and man, hands down best mobile phone internet browsing as of yet.

Can't wait to get an iPod Touch.. Or the iPhone for that matter..
