Slim, physicly minimalistic smartphone that runs Windows Mobile 5 or 6

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello

I'm loooking to buy a smartphone that runs Windows Mobile 5 or 6 (it absolutely doens't have to be 6) (pro or standard, i guess i'm going for standard) to use mostly for surfing and using web based applications.

It would be nice not to buy the latest, since they're more liable to be stolen. A decent battery time is a must though. And i would like it to be quite small and slim, like a normal cel phone

A plus if it's cheap too.

Isn't there a list or something where you can compare smartphones that use WM?

EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention, it has to be a 3G phone, e.g. it has to be able to connect via UMTS

This is the smart phone I use. It's not the latest and greatest but it does everything I need and I love the clamshell form factor. The internet isn't the best but it's functional.

It has WM5 but there is a hacked ROM out that has WM6 if you really want it. I haven't messed with it yet. Also, you're best bet is to find an unlocked Cingular version because it came with twice the memory of the other versions (128 vs 64).

Does that SP support UMTS (3G) connectivity?

Wirelessly posted (Samsung A737: SAMSUNG-SGH-I617/1.0 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

No, it uses Edge for data.

Try here and plug-in the info.

Good Luck

Worthless site i'm afraid. No phones displayed when choosing 3G and windows mobile.

Look fellas; i'm thinking of a phone like the HTC MTeoR

Slim small, running WM and having 3G. Phones like that (i want more phones to compare with)

Try GSM Arena's phone finder .

Posted by: septim

Thanks, that was a very good site

I'm thinking between the HTC S730 and the HTC MTeoR.

Which of these would you recommend? HSDPA is not necessary for me, and neither is WM 6.0 or qwerty keyboard.

What about battery time performance? I'm going to be connected to the internet via UMTS some when using the phone

I like the s710 too; closest thing to the SDA in size with some updated appointments.
Still it's a bit bigger though and no IRda (I still have a use for it).

Too bad that TMO won't pick it up.

Just saw these phones and thought you might be interested.

None of them are 3g phones...

The first Samsung Blackjack fits the bill. Small, thin, and light, 3G data, Windows mobile 6.

The phone I currently have is the Moto Q9h (or Global [I still don't get that]). That could fit your requirements pretty well. It's very thin, pretty light, definitely 3G, definitely WM6, I get decent battery life out of it and I use it to text, IM, browse the web on an almost daily basis and I still go about two days without charging it on the standard battery, and I haven't even used the extended battery that comes included in the box. The best part is I picked it up for 175 after an instant rebate off the AT&T site. I don't really know what fits your criteria for "cheap" but that was pretty cheap for me considering it's one of the newest smartphones on the market. The only drawback is that it's relatively wide, but it still fits perfectly in a suit pocket or whatever because it's so slim. Just my two cents.

So the Q 9h comes with an expanded battery? I can't see that on the pages selling that phone.

Geez, can't you just make up your own mind? Seems like you know which ones you're interested in, so why not go down to your carrier's store, and try one out during the 30-day return window?

No such thing exists here. As soon as you started a phone you bought there is no way you can return it. I'm not living in the U.S.

That's unfortunate. Not living in the U.S. that is.

Neh, **** happens. We do have a 14 day return policy though, but the problem is you can't even open the box if you want to return it.

lol so what's the point of a 14 day return policy ... buy the phone and stare at the box to determine if the phone is for you or not...

Oh well, I REALLY like the Q9h aka Q9 Global... It does pretty much everything I wanted it to except no WiFi ...

Well, to be more precise, you can open the box but not start it. However, since i hope noone can tell wether i started the S730 or not, i've bought it, and intend to return it later without saying that i started it.

Actually, it would be enough just to clear the cache and temp folders, reset the connection settings and uninstall the programs you tested right?

Or is there anything else i must do to make sure noone can tell i used the phone?

Perform a hard reset.

The Q9 GLOBAL (which is the AT&T version) is the only one I know of that comes with the extended battery already included... Since you said you are not living in the USA, then you don't have the AT&T version, so you probably do NOT have the extended battery in the box which is why you're not seeing it on any of the places selling that phone.

Sorry for being noobish, but how do you do that?

Posted by: septim

Hmm, nevermind i found a site that described it.

But if you do a hard reset, aren't the retail programs going to dissapear then? I got mine phone (not branded) with some programs, that was installed at the factory i guess. I also have some sound files. If they all dissapear, the store is gonna notice i used the phone.

On a different topic. Since the Motorola Q9H battery doesn't come included here, where can i buy it and the bigger cover.

I don't have any experience with the specific phone you're talking about, but when you do a hard reset you are basically restoring to the installed rom which often (usually [always?]) includes some programs within it. So when you do a hard reset it should delete everything from the phone then re-install all the programs that came with it minus any usage information. Same goes for ringtones, clip art, pictures, sounds etc.

Of course, I cannot guarantee that your experience will be the same as it always has been for me, and frankly the whole phone return policy you're talking about sounds bizarre, so please don't blame me if it doesn't work out for you.

Yes i will blame you. Then i'll travel to the states and find you. I will not sleep until i've found you, and then i'll take all your money.

Seriously though. So the ringtones that came in "retail" will be reinstalled aswell?

Well, they always have for me.

There aren't that many choices if you insist on 3G.

Samsung has an i220 coming (check Engadget today) and I think LG already has something too.

Alternatively look at the Blackjack/BJ II...

M5Rahul,
Doesn't the Q9h have the option of adding a Spectec 802.11b MiniSD WiFi Card ? I have read that the older Q's don't have enough power to handle the card, but I thought I read the newer Q9h and Q9m could.

I am looking at both models, but if the Q9h can't handle wifi, I can narrow my search to Q9m

I can't find anything about this Samsung i220.

I think you mean the Samsung i200:

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...ar-in-the-wild/

It's small, slim, has 3G data, runs WM6. Having used a Samsung Blackjack and now the q9h, I sometimes wish for a non-QWERTY "regular" cellphone that I can shove into my pocket without a bulge. This looks promising as a second phone. Also google 'HTC Erato.' It's the 3G follow up to the StarTrk.

Posted by: ckurt25

HTC announced a long time ago they aren't going to make the Erato, which is a shame. I liked my 3125 but didn't like edge speeds. Using the Q9h now and wish there was either a 3G Blackberry Pearl or a 3G flip running WM. I'm not married to any platform so long as I can get my corporate email. We use Lotus Notes and support BB and Good.

I have been looking at the new i780, and it looks awesome to me. Think it's Euro only at the time though

It's among the slimest in it's class (with qwerty keyboard), and the battery time is stated to be 7 hrs of talk time.

The reset worked nicely. Thanks!
