W810i vs W580i

I'm new to GSM, looking to get a phone to use with AT&T, I'm narrowed it down to the two models in the title. I have read reviews of both, was looking for a side by side compairson but couldn't find one. Any ways, I have a few questions possibly somebody who's used/owned both can answer for me.

first off, I like the form factor of the 810 much better, I'm sort of burned out on flip phones, I know the 580i is a slider but I'm digging the old school candy bar styling of the w800i. Here are my questions

I'm reading how much better the Walkman 2.0 interface is on the 580i, I will be using it for music listening, seems like a lot of the "so much better!" comments I saw sounded like fan boys who would have nothing to back that up, they just thing newer = better. I've never used either phone. Is 2.0 really that much better than 1.0?

the step counter, reviews I read seems to not really comment on if it's accurate and useful or just more of a gimmick. They mostly say "oh this is kind of cool" and don't go into any real detail. I sort of like it, assuming it's not just a gimmicky thing. One review I read of the 810i said it has the step counter, but that same review says the 810i won't work on AT&T because it doesn't have 950ghz & the 810i was just an 800 but in black. Seemed to be bad information there? So I didn't pay that one much mind.

speakerphone is a big thing for me, again reviewers seem to act like the 580i's speaker is the greatest ever, I found nothing really about the 810i's volume level. One review said it was good, I'm use to Nextel so to be loud is probably a lot higher than the same people who told me my Moto Q's speaker was "OMG LOUD!" (I found it pretty low actually)

those are my main questions, right now I'm leaning towards the 810i, one last question, pictures can be decieving. In person is the white really white, or does it have more of a white/silver'ish ting like the 580i.

Well, I can try to help you, as I have owned the W810i, my wife has a W580i, and I have an S500i ( sister phone to 580i).

I like the W810i. It will work on AT&T. The W810i was released on AT&T. You can use a branded or unbranded version. The w810c will not work, as that one is for China I believe. I like the candybar style phones. I got burned out on flip/clam phones, so I opted to move to candybar and slider type phones.

Ok, so the Walkman. Each phone, in fact, almost all of the SE phones work well as music players. The Walkman on the W810i was more than adequate to use as a music player, as is the one on the W580i. W810i takes MS Duo Pro, W580i takes M2.

Loudness. Each phone can be hacked, and new acoustic drivers can be installed, so if you are that worried about it, you can hack it, and make it really loud.

I have had both the black and the white W810i. I prefer the white, as not too many people have white phones. I loved the white. It was a really nice color. I would say it is kind of silverish, but the white is a really nice shade. I highly recommend it if you are serious about the W810i.

The W810i is a solid phone. It has great reception, great battery life, and a very nice feel in your hand. The screen is smaller than the W580i, and the Walkman software is older, but I feel that it might be a better phone.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I am sure that there are a lot of us here that have used/use them both, and can answer all of your questions.

awesome feedback man, I am thinking the white one too, white/orange looks good. Black is nice but as you said everyone has a black phone now a days. As for the volume loud is good, but is either noticably clearer? I think I'm pretty much over the step counter feature. So really it will come down to which has the better speakerphone

looks like 810i wins for battery life, and I like the form factor.

the screen is what .1 inch smaller? 1.9 vs 2 is not a big deal to me

I will be texting a lot, and have read about the 580 having a small, flimsly keypad. But the 810 looks to be very similar here? I won't find an 810 in person to try before I buy so it will have to be a sight unseen purchase.

anyone know the max size MS Duo Pro the 810 supports? I'm seeing 8 ggi cards on Froogle and that sounds awesome.

last question man, you said the walkman interface is similar, do either support cover art? the reviews I've read mention nothing one way or another about this. Seems like with a 2" 262k screen it would be a perfect feature to have, but what do I know?

thanks for the info, I think you all but sold me on the 810, now I just have to find it for the right price.

W810i screen is 176x220
W580i screen is 240x320

You are right about the keypad on the 580i. It is sort of flimsy, but I think that it is a bit bigger than the W810i. If you have big hands, neither phone will be good for texting. The 810i had a very sturdy keyboard, but the keys are a little small.

As for the max size memory card, not sure, I was running a 2 gig in my W810i. Search around the forum, I am sure that it has been asked already.

W810i had a great speaker for speakerphone calls.

Cover art, not sure. I think that the W580i may support it, not sure again, so double check. I am pretty sure the W810i does not support it.

If you get either phone, try to find one that is unbranded. They both support flash themes and flash menus, which are very cool. You can always debrand it yourself through Wotan or Davinci, but it is easier if it comes unbranded.

Posted by: quebert

wow I had paid no attention to the resolution difference between the 2 that's pretty big though. I will definitely get either an unbranded one or do it myself some of those flash themes look too cool. again thanks for the information I have a bit more to think about obviously before I rush out and buy one. maybe the 580 is the way to go.

well I searched and read up on Walkman 2.0 and other differences, from the few videos I saw of it in action on Youtube, the album cover feature of Walkman 2.0 only shows a thumbnail, which is pretty useless for me. I have discovered searching on here many models of both K & W, and some of the K's can be flashed to act like a W. Spending an hour reading I learned a lot but I have a question for anyone out there.

I like the form factor of the w810, buttons seem a little nicer than the K models that have those super thin metal looking ones. As much as I like the 810, the resolution seems a bit low. I don't need a 5 MP camera or a ton of extra features. But I would like this

1. candy bar form
2. 240x320 resolution
3. if Walkman 2.0 supports full screen album covers (can't find info on this) 2.0 if not 1.0 is fine.
4. doesn't cost more then $250'ish

does this phone exits? This should be all my questions until I get my phone.

Walkman 2.0 Doesn't support the full screen album covers, only the little tiny thumbnails you see.

The W610 almost seems to fit your criteria, apart from the screen resolution (176x220).

They can go from $190-$250 online, depending on where you get it. It is basically and upgrade to the w810i, with a couple new features and A2DP bluetooth. The bad part for most people is the rice-grain keys. For most people they are only uncomfortable for the first hour, and after that you become a pro of the keys.

have you use both? the keys on the 810 look better to me in the pics, I don't care about the album covers anymore and I would never use A2DP. Seems like the 810 would be pretty much the same? I'm basing getting an 810 over the 610 due to the keyboard appearing to be better on the 810. Both have pretty blah resolution, that's why I'm still looking at the 580, even though it's a slider.

I don't have big hands at all, they're pretty small actually, but I have pretty fat fingers. what I'm reading about all the W & K phones about being hard to text is sort of worrying me thanks for the info though, I guess I'll add the 610 to my list of possible phones to get.

I would suggest W810 over W610, even tho the 610 is an upgrade of 810, it doesnt improve much beside the slimmer form. I think W810 is better cuz it can be bought at a lower price than the W610.
For W580, the keypad definitely sucks. The keypad breaking issue is everywhere. I have the W580 and I never use the step counter. So if you don't mind the difference in screen resolution, get the W810. It is well-built, has better battery life than the W580 (I have played with the W810 of my friend for a while), and can be bought under $200 usually.

Posted by: AlvinYang

i would get w610 because its newer and prices have dropped on them a bit but nothing is wrong with the w810i i like both of them but prefer the newer phone =DD i haev a w580i dunt like it at all... build quality sucks i use my s710 over it last night friend showed me his and the screen slides up and down and when keys pressed the othe end lifts up... so if i pressed 1 the 3 key would be lifted... lolz this should just be a probelm with his tat can be fixed by a replacement i ahve a feeling his are gonna crack soon lolz

Posted by: NickS_

I've had both. Trust me, the w810i is better in every each way over the w580i. The w580 is very cheap, flimsy and is just meh. The w810i is a beast compared to it.

Posted by: quebert

Hummm looks like besides the 580 only the 710 has the step counter? I don't want a clam shell phone again. Not sure I like the 610i since it's the same resolution I'll probably go with the 810i, found a used one in good condition for $125 that sounds about right.

Thanks to everyone who replied, even if I don't get an 810i I'll probably stay away from the 580. Now the 880 looks similar to the 810/610 but has a higher res screen. Cost a lot more though.

Posted by: quebert

I don't like the looks of the 880i, I guess the 810i is as close to what I want as I'm going to find, bummer it doesn't support A2DP but I like everything else about the handset a lot. Also sucks the white ones I'm finding for sale seem to cost more than the black ones. Haven't seen either in person but I think I'd like the white more.

Looks like I'll have to cough up a bit more $$$ to get the one I want, oh well

w810c is same as w810 or w810i. There is no differences internally between all 3 of them. Yes, w810c is marketed to be sold in China, but they are the same phone with slight cosmetically differences. w810c will work with ATT's network as it is supported by ATT's frequency

one more question, I have decided on the w810i but wanted to ask about the replacement covers I'm seeing on Ebay, they have white and it's pretty cheap, which is good because I found a black 810 locally for a decent price. Are these after market housings typically as good as the OEM ones? It looks like a bit more of a process then popping off a cover and snapping a new one on. I know one of the complaints about the 810's are they tend to creek a little.

Was wondering if the housings on ebay are any better, or any worse, or the same?

thanks

I thought that you can use the bluetooth headset with the walkman on the w580i. Is this not right? I love my w810i but with the bluetooth headset would work with the walkman and not just with the phone. Had thought about replacing with the w580i when my contract runs out. (AT&T)

thanks

DL

You need Bluetooth headphones to listen to music, and a regular Bluetooth headset will not work for music.

Sorry, I meant head phones. I don't understand though -- is there a certain headset or headphones, using Bluetooth, that will work with the music on the w580i?

w810i hands down. I've had both, and can tell you the w580i is a piece of crap in comparison. I used it for about 2 days before I sold it and went back to my w810i. Now I am on to a k850i but I still hold a high regard for my w810i and use it as well.

The w810i in my opinion is one of the best phones ever offered by SE.

I had W810, K550, S500i
if you care more on cam, get W810 or K550
reception is better on W810 and S500
W810 and K550 have Play button, while S500/W580 only works when player is on the front
S500 has QVGA screen, while W810 and K550 have 176x220
S500 and K550 have wireless headphones support, W810 does not
S500 and K550 look thinner, W810 is more solid
earpiece on S500 is the best, K550 is awful, W810 is not loud enough
speaker on S500 is the loudest
W810 accepts PSP and M2 (with adaptor), S500 and K550 only accept M2 card

Just look for A2DP or Stereo Bluetooth headphones. MOST if not all look like regular headphones (2 earpieces).
