AT&T branded Tilt, or unlocked Kaiser?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So I was watching some you tube videos of the Tilt. I got to one that was an unbranded Kaiser (or Tytn 2, whatever). Instead of AT&T it had HTC on the top...

Anyway, it had a camera on the front for video calls, and appeared to have all the other features of the AT&T branded device.

Does anyone know if everything works on the unbranded version on AT&T? Would the video calling work? And the push to talk? How about the MMS?

Any other issues I should be aware of before I buy an unlocked Kaiser?

I'm not a current AT&T customer, but I'm seriously thinking about leaving Sprint and getting a Tilt. But if the AT&T branded unit has less features than the unbranded unit, I'd rather go that route...

Wirelessly posted (HTC_TyTN_II Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

if your gonna use it on att or tmobile I don't think buying the kaiser is worth it. since you can't use the front facing camera for much. maybe some aps but not video calls. everything else will work once you setup the right settings

So if I had 2 unbranded Kaisers, 1 was mine and 1 was my wife's, would the video calling work between the 2 of them?

No, because there is no video calling in the US. It was made especially for Europe because they have it over there.

Dang, that sucks. Is there an app like some sort of video chat that would use the camera?

only thing that comes close is pocketcaster. one way only

Get the Tilt and unbrand it. Same thing as the Kaiser (- the front camera) except up to 500 dollars cheaper.

Dang that really sucks that there is no app for this. Technology is supposed to move forward, not backward. I used to use MS Portrait back in the day (4 years ago or so) with my Hitachi G1000, running Pocket PC 2002, and a Sprint 1X connection. It allowed 2 way video chats...

After all this time, and now with 3G all over the place, and much more powerful devices, I would think that someone had a video chat app that was better than MS Portait was back then (or at least as good)...

I think I will start a new thread on the video chat topic. That way it doesn;t get lost in a thread about unlocked Kaiser versus branded Tilt...

It's not a matter of an app, it's a matter of the provider.

No, it's the app. If the provider supported it, all that means is the device would come with a working app on the branded ROM.

Thgink about it- if I had say the Windows Live Messenger, and it supported the front camera, AT&T wouldn't have to support it.

I used to use MS Portrait back in the day with my G1000 on Sprint's 1X connection (similar to Edge) and it worked just fine (video chat and all). And there is no way anyone can say Sprint supported it...

I emailed Microsoft about Portrait. They responded saying they know the front camera is an issue, and they are working on it. However, Portrait does not run on Windows Mobile 6. They said they are working to get both front camera support and Windows Mobile 6 support, but it won't be done for a while.
So, once that's done, you'll have video chat on any network with a fast enough data connection- regardless if the network "supports" it or not...
