I use I-Tunes to cut down the length and covert to MP3. There is an option in the conversion settings to filter below a certain frequency to minimize Bass distortion.

Right -- use an audio editing app... It's not a built-in function on any of the included software.

You could also download a program called Audacity, and cut some bass out as well. I used this program with good results with my 8830 to increase the volume of ringtones so I could finally hear the phone ring.

From the iTunes menu, select Preferences... The Preferences window will open.
Click on the Advanced button and choose Importing.
From the Import Using pull-down menu select MP3 Encoder.

From the Setting pull-down menu, select Custom.
Choose your bitrate (i.e. 128)
Check the Box for: Filter Frequecies Below 10 Hz.
Save settings.

Go to your song in the Itunes library, Right Click and choose Convert to MP3. It will create a new MP3 file with the new settings.

Audacity is great for cutting ring tones, and yes the pass filter is great. But, Audacity's MP3 compression is pretty bulky. I export as WAV and then run through another program for the final MP3 export. You don't need ultra-high-quality files for ringtones.

The program is RazorLame and there's a walkthrough somewhere here on HoFo that has a great walk-through. I've got it on the other computer so I'll try to repost it later on.
