If all goes well they will flip the switch sometime next week

Posted by: Jumbie

I live in crappy Paterson at the moment and I got home tonight to find a 3G signal on my phone. Let's see if my piss poor reception and insane number of dropped calls has any improvement.

Posted by: butthead440

so did it improve with the 3g?

Posted by: Jumbie

I haven't been on the phone that much since then.

Will post an update once I've had a few longer calls. Usually what happens is that, while talking on a bluetooth headset so the phone isn't even moving around, I will go from 5 signal bars to none. I then have to reboot the phone in order for it to reconnect to the network.

I have the A717 (which reportedly has pretty good reception) and had it exchanged under warranty a while back. It's been better since the switch but it's still happpening often enough.

3g signal seems stronger in Secaucus this morning as compared to last night

Posted by: butthead440

shouldnt 3g fix your dropped call issues

it depends .where i live , the turning on of 3G corrected alot of handoff issues, along with gaps. I think they retune the network each time they visit a tower. So dont be surprised if alot of issues get resolved as a result of them turning on 3g.

How do you find out when the switch is being turned on in your area?

I'm in bergen county, Lodi! WtF, every town around me has it (Yes, secaucus. has heights, teaneck, garfield and it's getting me pissed off. I hit Rt. 17 and it's 3g through Secaucus down through West N.Y., NJ.

i find out cuz a friend of mine works on the towers mnitoring them

Can you find out for me? Lodi, NJ 07644?

Posted by: butthead440

yea i know where lodi is its gonna be soon he told me most of north jersey will get covered with 3g by the end of the year since lodi is close to totowa area i can assume it will be next but yes ill ask him next time i see him

Posted by: Jayden0606

Keep me posted... Funny thing is I don't even use a 3g device. I put my BJ II up for sale and it's in my closet.

Posted by: Jumbie

Well, I haven't dropped a call yet although I still haven't been having as long conversations as I sometimes do.

So keeping my fingers crossed that the problem is finally fixed with the network upgrade.

I've also noticed that my calls seem louder. I usually talk on level 6 (of 7) volume and have had it at 4 or 5 recently cause 6 is too loud.

Posted by: Jayden0606

Omg... At work I decided to look at the 3g map and Lodi is supposedly covered fully as of 2/29/2008 the map said. Not 3g coverage, but last map update. Imma put my sim in the BJ tonight and see what happens... hopefully!

The 3G panels have been up in the towers for months. It's about time they turned it on!

In Paterson near Totowa I peaked 1.73mbps down and 358kbps up with averages just over 1mbps. That's with my data card. Pretty good even at low signal like I have. My neighborhood is not very 1900Mhz-friendly.

I really want to experience 3g... Many people want it for the d/l u/l speeds, but I want it to be able to surf/talk. A lot of times I'm talking to my g/f and want to find out how much I have in one bank account or a movie playing and I have to tell her I'll call her back.

I want 3G for the ability to listen to streaming audio while driving. While audio streaming is possible on EDGE, data links are very unstable when doing handoffs from tower to tower and often they drop the audio stream and you have to hit play again. Just imagine having music from XM or Sirius or whatever else you want, like out of town stations, all in your car at no extra charge.

Posted by: psycho-

the data tends to hiccup from tower to tower on 3G...I've never kept a stream more than a couple miles at a time. Quite often, on things like streaming audio or video (sling) or my company VPN, it just times out...

Posted by: butthead440

so has your voice improved with the 3g handoffs things like that

Posted by: bobolito

That's weird. I usually drive through Connecticut all the way to Providence without significant drop audio streams. Maybe a couple of times. The entire 95 corridor through CT/RI/MA is on 3G.

By the way, there's no 3G in Wayne yet. I only reacquired 3G once I arrive in Paterson. I have to check how far it goes on Rt 80.

3g is alive !!! omg !!! this is awesome. Now Paramus, NJ and we straight.

go Lodi, it's yer birthday... go Lodi.

Posted by: butthead440

haha i was just about to post that 1 by 1 north nj will be completely covered hopefully with all this 3g coming to nj at&t voice can compete with vzw in nj

Posted by: Jayden0606

I was suprised, one of my reps had told me to look it up and saw as of 3/2/2008, it was all blue. I realized I haven't use my blackjack since last week, prior to March.

Posted by: Flyinace2000

They really got to step up the 3g rollout in NJ/NY Metro. I live in Bergen county and the only time i have 3g is when i got to my girlfriend's place in hoboken.

What are you talking about? The map is still backdated to jan 31st. Still doesn't show all the 3g that has been turned on.

Posted by: Optimizedbbr

I'm not sure when it got flipped here but 3G is now active in Pompton Lakes.

Posted by: butthead440

to bad its only in 1900 mhz i hear we wont get 850 mhz 3g for awhile

Posted by: jpapa1086

i have realized that 3g coverage extends from the hudson river all the way down rt 80 till exit 54 (a little past paterson)... i live next to rt 17 in rutherford and its all 3g until u get to mahwah .... there is a very large blanket of 3g coverage throughout the northeastern part of nj lately ... im very impressed

Posted by: Flyinace2000

Thats good news! I live in oakland which is only 5 minutes from rt 17 and mahwah. Now i just need to find a n82 with US 3g.

Lol... I use our internal maps. I'm not sure if the public ones are updated. Our internal maps were as updated as the public ones, though it seemed that way. Guess not anymore. I was wondering how people on the forums would state that they were told it was on in their city.

Posted by: bobolito

I just tried the interactive map and it looks like it has been updated. It shows the coverage described here. However, it still doesn't show 3G in Pompton Lakes as someone indicated earlier.

It also shows that they turned on the long overdue areas of Yonkers and Mamaroneck in NY, finally closing the gap on I-95 and I-87.
