Tilt - Some Plus and Minus

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok Folks, I've had the Tilt for a couple of weeks. The fine folks here have given me some great advise either via answering questions, or just searching, so I thought I would give back a little.

I came to the Tilt via using an iPAQ PDA and the w600i phone for a few years. So I was looking for a PDA that also was a phone. I WAS NOT looking for a phone that acted like a PDA nor an iPOD that I could make phone calls.

Now as a value-added, I am a GPS user. I have a StreetPilot and had a Garmin eTrex Vista which I sold a couple of days ago as a result of using the GPS in the Tilt.

So far the +'s outweigh the -'s by a long shot.
1. It is reasonably fast.
2. It has plenty of memory to load my programs.
3. It customizes easily enough.
4. It is fairly intuitive.

I especially like the PDA and Camera functions and the phone works like a phone.

My only real compaints so far are:
- not being able to delete voicemail messages without opening the case. (can't find a way to customize the buttons to press 7 or 9)

- Screen brightness is an issue outdoors.

- The AOL software I have, eventhough it's PC2003, almost works. It actually loads and runs fine, but I can send messages or exit gracefully because those buttons are off the bottom of the screen. It's too bad, cause it's a nice software package that I used for years for my mail.

- No IR port. which would be nice to beaming and sync'n.

That's my only real complaints...

General Stuff:
- A Monaco Aluminum Case is fantastic!!!! (do a google search).
- Odyssey GPS Software is fantastic.
- Jabra BT8040 Stereo Bluetooth headset is great!!!

Programs I have loaded:
Spb Mobile Shell
Spb Plus
PIE Plus
Ilium ListPro
CheckList
AIM
WiFi Companion
1-Calc
Pocket Mechanic
Yahtzee
GrandMaster Chess
Tic-Tac-Toe
PPCTunes

I also have several programs for the GPS loaded.
I actually like that most of the GPS Software is specific to what you want to go be it navigate or geocache etc... Installed are...

Odyssey Mobile (Fantastic!!!!)
**BackCountry (Not sure yet)
**TackyPro (Looks like a Keeper)
**GPS Tuner (Some issues getting loaded)

** = Still trial versions, narrowing it down.

I also loaded the Kaiser Tweaks that are talked about elsewhere on this forum.

If anyone has any questions about any of the above softwares or how I use them, or what they are... feel free to ask. Most of them I have used for years, except for the GPS Software which I'm really getting knee deep into.

I intended to replace my phone and PDA with one device, and as you can see, it really needed to be a PDA. In addition, I was able to unload yet another device... my Garmin eTrex GPS.

The Tilt may not be the BEST phone, the BEST PDA, the BEST Camera, the BEST mp3 player or the BEST GPS... but it does all of these things really well for a fraction of what those items would be separately.

What do you mean by customize buttons to press 7 or 9? Do you mean the screen goes off on you so you can't see the keys?

Why do you need an IR port when you can use Bluetooth to beam stuff?

Love the device indoors. Outside the screen really craps out. Can't even see my contacts list to make calls. sux.

Why don't you get the on-screen dialer to show the on-screen keypad (not the onscreen keyboard), and hit 7 or 9? In fact, usually the on-screen keypad never goes away to begin with especially if you use the 1 quick-dial for voicemail.

It does suck that voicemail systems don't support voice commands.

Sorry I didn't see people had responded to this...

I have the Monaco case.. which covers the screen. I can do just about everything I need to for a phone call without opening the case (the navigation buttons are all exposed), but to click 7 or 9, you need access to the keyboard or the screen. As the Spb Mobile Shell or Plus allows me to program the buttons to do different things, it would be nice if in phone mode, just like I have access to the Talk and Hangup... if I could Delete or Save (7 or 9 ) too.

Here is a link to a picture of the case. It's an awesome case that really protects the unit. I don't use it all the time, just when on the motorcycle or out in the weather.

Any recommendations? I will search on it, but if you have a recommended one I'm open to it.

if you are talking on the phone and hit the power button the screen comes back and you can hit 7 for deletion.

Before I bought my Tilt last week, I have read countless threads about it and one of the most common complaints is about the screen going blank when talking to someone. well, when you are talking, normally you dont need the screen on, so it turns off for less batery drain, but if you push the power button the screen comes back and you can do what ever it is you want to do while on speaker or what not.

I guess I didn't explain the issue very well.

I have a Monaco case... it COVERS THE SCREEN. I have access to the buttons, jog wheel and all when the case is closed, but the screen is COVERED by the protector.

For the phone, obviously I have no use to "touch" the screen. I just need to see it.... except to do any voice mail functions. In fact, for what I do mostly when I have the phone in that case, I can do with the wheel and nav buttons. Best case I have ever had for a phone/PDA.

WHat I'm looking for is a way to use the nav buttons to navigate the keypad to send the 7 to delete and other voicemail controls.

the only thing i can think of, is that head over to xda developers, and try to find a way to re-map one of your buttons to 7 or 9. for example, if you dont use the ptt button, change that to 7 and change the ok button below it to 9... i'm pretty sure you can do it, just not sure how...

also about gps software; i use tomtom6 and i love it!

Thanks omaralt... good advice on going to xda-developers. I find that site so overwhelming with so much info I get lost. As a developer myself, it's just too much input, but you are right, they would have the way to do it if there was one and the PTT button would be just the ticket as I do not have that capability.

As far as GPS... I went with Odyssey as my primary. I'm still looking at TackyPro and Backcountry, and even GoogleMaps comes in handy sometimes. Both TomTom and Garmin have great solutions, but that's a whole 'nother league that I don't really need at this time. In the Pacific Northwest, a GPS is really just a convenience. I-5 goes North and South, mountains to the east, water to the west and only about a 30 mile wide stretch along that route that in inhabited. Pretty tough to get lost.

I would like to get the Garmin software however, as I can download GeoCache point directly to it. Again, it's just a convenience.

Wouldn't that be more of a minus of the case than the phone? Also, it was not obvious to the reader that you did not have a use to touch the screen.

CBreze, I agree. The screen is crap outside. Even indirect sunlight makes it impossible to read the display (e.g. standing near a building with an overhang blocking the sun).

I got this case from Seidio. It protect your phone very well, without making it that much thicker. You also don't have to remove the case to access the keyboard. The belt holster that comes with it works pretty well also.
