WOTAN vs. cable unlocking?

I'm totally new to phone unlocking, and wondered if anyone can tell me the difference between using an IMEI-based service, like WOTAN, and using a cable unlock software?

I mean, I know Wotan is a service-based thing, which means I need to pay each time I unlock a phone, whereas with the software, I could unlock as many, say, DB2020 CID52 phones as I like, which makes the cable method more attractive (for me), but beyond this, is there a difference?

P.S.: Sorry if this violates the rules about unlocking posts. I'm not 100% clear on them anymore...

Wotan does not offer unlocking. It just debrands the phone.

Cable service unlocks permanently, so you won't need to unlock it anymore. Its advantage is you have the cable to unlock more phones, instead DaVinci (unlocking online), where you buy credits to unlock phone per phone.

Good thing I asked first then, eh? :-)

I guess I'm still a little unclear on what the difference is between de-branding and unlocking. Can't I de-brand the phone by flashing new firmware?

Yes you can. You flash the phone and you put a generic custom file to debrand it.
The difference is simple: debrand means you remove operator/carrier stuff and leaves the phone as-factory, and unlock allows you to use SIM from more carriers.
